CBS Makes Star Trek: Picard Pilot Free On YouTube 'For a Limited Time'

why? 300GB of data is 300GB of data. why would they not use the term?

Because 30 years ago hundreds of gigabytes was science fiction. Hundreds of gigabytes fits on my keychain and isn't a big deal even now. Unless storage and data transfer speeds do not upgrade in the next 400 years, fine. Yes it is stilll just a measurement of quantity, but it is the level of insignificance of it by that time. No not a huge deal, but the term was written in because someone was not actually tech savvy when they wrote that is all.

Try to think of it similarly as money, people won't get out of their car to pick up a quarter they dropped, go far enough back and that is significant money.

you guys are confusing storage capacity with the terminology. 300GB was 300GB 20 years ago and will be 400 from now. its not like she was transferring his 64K/360fps holographic porn...

In "The Measure of a Man", a Starfleet judge rules that Data is not Starfleet property. The episode establishes that Data has a storage capacity of 800 quadrillion bits (1000 TB or 909 TiB) and a total linear computational speed of 60 trillion operations per second (60 THz). Doesn't seem as impressive as it did when the episode aired in 1989.

It is just disconnecting to me from the future feeling when I dont even consider 300GB to be a significant amount of data to move through my network at home.

not when you are talking hi res raw pics and your 4k porn stash but 300GB is a shit tonne of text, pdfs and stuff like that "data". they didnt say what the data was and the 300GB seemed fine to me. like i said before, it's written for normies.

Agreed, i guess i am not a "normie" so for me it was disconnecting.Just was trying to state why i felt that way. For me it is kinda like when they use current slang in future stuff. Pulls me out.

The first episode was interesting, I watched it on Youtube. It didn't capture me enough to want to pay for CBS All Access on top of the other subscriptions I already have. I haven't seen enough of Discovery to render an opinion there. I'll either wait until it hits OTA or another service (or I drop one of my current services).

I so cringed when I heard 300GB. Quads man, quads. Even if you make the argument 300GB is what they meant, it doesn't make sense. 300GB of data 400 years in the future is going to be a pointless unit to even consider measuring data in.

it depends on what the data is though. research papers/info that is mostly text wouldnt take up more space. maybe compression it 400 years is really really really good.

A couple hundred years in the future unicode is probably UTF 128.

Aren't they supposed to be far ahead of even quantum computing in the Star Trek post TNG timeline? So 300 gb would be incredibly small, like 300 bytes today. They keep killing characters as a cheap plot device on this show and it's getting old. Also, I realize marina sirtis got old but holy shit what happened to her voice? Sounds like an old smoker voice now, so gross. I didn't like the BS about regenerative soil or the oh so convenient story of their dead son who just happened to need a positronic matrix as a cure but oh noes the ban on synthetics!

Soji all of the sudden developing a data like head tilt was dumb af and Riker just magically picking up on the entire scenario because he's just that good was also irritating.

Rios pulling a Top Gun maverick maneuver in space where the Romulan flew past him was insulting but I'm sure those without a brain didn't even give it a second thought.

Honestly what a stupid fucking show, I hope it gets canned after s2 because this show is just destroying the Trek brand. I can't believe I thought it was going to be good initially and defended it, damn was I wrong.

Don't go Google the name of the planet.

I dont get the hate on the 300GB, though i agree it should've been something like "you then transferred a number of files". We still use SI units centuries after their creation. And aren't bytes hardware dependent anyways?

things like this are usually symptoms of the underlying problem, which in most of hollywood these days is bad writing. Poor use of terms like 300GB for something in the 24th century, using modern slang for something set in another time period, dialogue and concepts delivered with a sloppy hamfist.

i blame too many people with their nose in a phone rather than talking to each other.

the hate isn't the term, its what the term embodies about the rest of the show.

Picard doesn't sound like his old self either... I guess he could be acting like a frail, raspy-sounding old man (I think I've even seen his hand tremble in an episode), or just age does that to a person. Riker sounds about the same, but I think the actor played the trombone for a number of years, so maybe that has helped him

Why wouldn't he sound different when he's playing a different character.

I watched ep 1.... They need better writers badly. Go find the ones that made ds9 they would be perfect for this darker settings

Dude he's like a million years old. Yes you can see him shaking.

It was more a joke, but the truth is he's playing a similar, not the same character. Different Star Trek license than the TNG.

It's not a different license. There are no different licenses for Trek anymore. All of Trek is owned by ViacomCBS.

It is a different license. The remerger took place later, not that it would necessitate an original license anyway.

The remerger doesn't change anything for shows already in production, and I bet any future shows will be made under the alternative license as well.
At this point I believe original star trek is dead and not coming back. And that's a good thing, I'd not want it further desecrated by making any of the modern garbage canon to it.

In the 1995 movie johnny Mnemonic, which takes place in the future (2021) 80 gigs was too much data for Johnny to hold. This is silly now as we can easily store that amount of data on a thumb drive, and we have been able to for some time.

ah okay, I thought maybe it was a prime vs kelvin timeline thing hah

I just realized the latest episode already aired and I forgot because that's how memorable this show is.

The last two are at least entertaining.

I finally watched the episode this morning, it wasn't too bad but I think they wasted too much time w/the Raffi + Rios holograms bs. She could have saved at least 15-20 mins of air time by just going to talk to him directly. This is what i hate about this show, there is unnecessary dialogue just so they can reach their required air time and it just feels like a lot of fluff/filler. The explanation of Zhat Vash was pretty stupid too to be honest. Ok so those chicks witnessed a bunch of horrors, why would you kill yourself? I'd assume they're all trained soldiers who can stomach that sort of imagery. Then to go on some crusade against synthetics just because some ancient race hundreds of thousands of years ago created flawed synthetics (where did they go?) and got wiped out doesn't mean the cycle would repeat itself--data was proof of that. I feel like this entire arc is pretty stupid and pointless and I hope for this shows sake they come up with something fresh for s2 because right now the story is really weak.

Yes, but the reason that '300GB' isn't out of place is that they're talking about the size of the data itself, not the capacity of the storage device.

I can readily get 256GB of capacity in the size of a fingernail, and yet documents that contain only text still take up just a handful of kilobytes. Image and video compression has reduced file sizes over time.

Her storage device might have been able to hold 256EB for all we know.

and thats the point i was trying to make.

Yeah data is data but it's the context that matters. Nobody would say, "OMG that guy sent a 300 kb document", they'd just say, "oh yeah yeah he sent a document". It's like they stuck 300 GB in there just because it sounded like a large number to the writer.
