Boot up issue with ubermix.org (ubunto)

I selected this build because it is for my friend's 10yr old who is greatly enjoying a programming class at school using Scratch. Ubermix comes with a nice selection of software for geeky kids. It works perfectly fine.

BUT...if I add a 2nd unpartitioned hard drive to the pc, Ubermix hangs when loading. I've tried this with 2 different drives. I can install and run Ubermix just fine on these drives. But if I add a 2nd drive, Ubermix just hangs when loading.

It is just one of those weird unique builds I don't expect to find an answer for. Latest build came out this year, but there hasn't been anyone on their support forums in years. I am not a Linux specialist in any way. If I can find an easy fix, then great! If not, eh. I'd like to at least know how possible it is to create a build configured to hate additional drives added to the system.
 
The hard way: try to figure out Linux volume management, figure out what Ubermix is doing, and figure out what it's doing wrong.

The slightly less hard way: install a well-supported distro like Ubuntu and build it up.


Linux is a kernel, GNU is the operating system, and distros are versions of the previous with a set of default configurations specified, applications added, as well as desktop environments and installers.

It looks like you're having a problem with the configuration of Ubermix and you're wrangling with it to get the specific applications bundled. In theory, you should be able to get the applications elsewhere. You can create a Ubuntu install USB drive, boot it up, and see if the applications you're looking for are available.

I agree with IdiotInCharge. Try another distro and see if it works to rule out hardware issue. Personally I would also just use an Ubuntu flavor and install the needed apps. Ubermix is just an Ubuntu derivative which means all the software is already in the Ubuntu repos. Ubermix even gives you a nice list all the software installed. ;)

I actually have it running, and it is a nice little build with tons of stuff for a young little geek. It is the annoyance of not being able to install it on the drive that I want. It has a msata 32gb ssd and a sata 160gb drive. But ya know I am not even going to worry about it anymore. :) I am just going to leave it with the 160gb drive and let him worry about what he wants to do with it in the future. I mean the kid is 10. Let me see how long it will take him to grow out of one 160GB drive or before he starts experimenting with another OS. Ubermix simply doesn't give the option of where to install it to. And there is probably a way since it starts with Grub with the option of a shell, and Ubermix itself has a shell option. I was reading up on a list of command and found ls which shows me the drives but not drive details. I mean if I get that that far, then I am sure there is a command somewhere to find drive details and select the drive to install to.

I wanted to come back and say just how nice the Ubunto repo is! I don't play often with Linux, and I was quite surprised with how clean usable Ubuntu is. I remember decades ago I had tried Linux, and I got frustrated just because I read I had to open up shell and write code to just make a shortcut to my desktop.
