No Man's Sky - a procedurally generated sand box space exploration game

Do you ever fly home and find your landing pad being used by some asshole alien? Lol

Always build two pads man.

You make some cool as hell bases dude! Wish I was that patient, I'd rather play spaceships ;D

It's not so much patience as it is my "casual" play style, I log in for a few minutes here and there and just do a little at a time.
I like to see how efficient and compact I can make a manufacturing operation so it's function over form.

There's so much to do in this game, once you just start doing :)

Started a new save for this update. No market crashing. Not freighter save scumming etc. Just taking things as they go. Great so far.

So what is the best way to get new ships? I found one on a planet and fixed it up. I got another (a freighter) through warping into a system and saving the ship. I am guessing getting future ships will not be quite as simple.

One way is to find and claim abandoned ships and only fix the launch thrusters and pulse engine. Fly that to a Station or call it to a Trading Post — swap it with one of equal or lesser value that isn’t damaged. Talk to the pilots of the ships that come in to do this.

There are tons of vids on ship hunting to check out on YT.

Frostworth farming on a very alien planet. No terra forming, just going with the landscape...

I played this a little bit last night, and it’s looking pretty amazing now. It also gave me the opportunity to pick up the plot I was on that I had somehow lost track of before, so that was cool. I noticed quite a few more visual effects even than the last update I played. Nice!!

Hopefully I’ll get some more time to play today or tomorrow.

Ironically, after posting this, I ended up finding 2 new ships, both through getting distress signals on a planet (usually from finding a facility on it first, and answering the question correctly got me the distress beacon). I had tried googling, and the suggestion i found was to fly over planets and look for an orange beam. I don't know if it is because I am on the lowest graphics settings (my video card is pretty terrible currently), but i flew around forever and never found a thing. Of course i have pretty bad pop-in as is, because of the low settings reducing the draw distance.

ThatITGuy

We all have pop-in, that is one thing bad about this game. No manual drawing distance slider.
It wasnt always like this, but some people were complaining LOUDLY about poor performance so HG made some potato friendly adjustments. And no manual option...sigh..

if you are going to look for stuff on planets, my suggestion would be to only do it on the small moon sized planets, as they tend to be much closer together than what the large planets have

Tried this out since all of the updates and I go back and forth on the game. If anything it makes me curious once everything is said and done if they decide to do a sequel how it might turn out. I am sure my complaints are nothing new and you either get used to it or you don't. It may just be the wall I can't get past though.

I hate the ship controls and can't fly to save my life. I haven't really looked into remapping them, but they aren't mapped like any game I have ever played.

I hate the inventory. I am constantly full and always forget I have to switch inventories when I am in a space station to sell everything.

The lack of information sometimes is incredibly annoying. For example I bought upgrades for my tool not realizing I couldn't actually install them since nothing told me they wouldn't be usuable.

It still seems sometimes like it takes way too many steps to craft something.

Agreed on the ship controls being counter intuitive to people who have played other "flight" games. The first few times i took off in the ship, i spent a good portion of my time spinning around out of control and doing rolls all the time. I have gotten better now and can actually take out 3 or 4 pirates when they interdict me.
For the inventory, I have played RPGs for 20+ years now, so I am used to having to manage inventory. I will say that they make it pretty easy to upgrade it. I have just been playing 4 days now, and I have already found 3 drop pods that upgraded the suit by one slot each time. Each station seems to also have a "suit upgrade station" where you pay increasing amount of credits to add a slot.
Then there are the storage slots on the ships. I have pretty easily found new ships with more slots, so I am up to 24 slots on the starship i can store in. I think the game also gives you a frigate for free (well, you warp into a system, fight off some pirates from attacking a frigate, and the captain gives it to you for free as thanks). This gives you additional storage, with the option to build even more rooms in the frigate to expand that further (and the materials required are pretty basic, so I already have 3 rooms additional. I am guessing the land vehicles also have their own storage, but I do not have one yet. All of these are a short flight/walk away at any given time.
There is also storage you can build at your base, but my base is currently 4 or 5 systems away. I am holding off on building a new base until I find a planet with no sentinels, no "harsh conditions", and preferably a nice view (The planet with miles of beaches was also fiery. The planet with no harsh conditions and lots of greenery also had sentinels everywhere.)

The game definitely doesn't explain everything to you, which can be frustrating at times. I have probably posted here far too often with my questions, as well as relied on google for some things. I am not sure which tool upgrades you bought, but I have yet to see any upgrades i could not install (with required materials to actually do the "install") other than things that mention they upgrade "X". I have been through 3 or 4 exo-tools now, so I have seen a number of the different modules that can be in them, which would have upgrades. If you go out exploring and are nice to certain NPCs, they may give you a new Exo-tool. I now have one that is much better than anything I can find for sale, and i got it for free. It actually annoyed me that I spent resources on repairing and installing upgrades to the other tools (though I did find out that if I used resources to partially repair a damaged slot, that portion of fix seems to carry over to the new item. I am not sure that fully fixing the slot actually carries over to any upgrade, for ships or exo-tools).

As far as crafting, I would say it is equal to Minecraft, which i play with my kids. So far, for me, the ingredients needed for a situation are somewhere nearby. The game walks you through getting started out with this stuff. I haven't found it to be too complicated for the basic stuff (resource + carbon fuel = new resource), but I know eventually there will be a next step up.

Also trade Nav data to the Cartographer in Space Stations to get maps to points if interest.
Yeah, i have found that the distress beacon maps will sometimes get you a new ship. One time i thought i was about to get a really nice looking ship, only for it to tell me i needed to talk to the guy siting near the ship. I helped him with repairs and he took off. No new ship. Sometimes it also leads you to a frigate crash, which I have had poor luck on getting the salvage modules from. I also had it where the map pointed me at a crashed frigate i had already gotten logs from and taken cargo. I tried another map but no new point of interest came up, it kept pointing me at that same crash.

Good to know everyone has the pop-in. I am on a 1050 (non-TI) because it was cheap, so i usually assume graphical deficiencies are due to that. I did see one setting where the hover text made me think it affected draw distance.

So I saw this terrarium at the Quicksilver dealer on the Anomaly, and thought that would be cool, right next to the sofa or something..

Turns out it was much bigger than anticipated...a lot much bigger...

Brand new to the game. Ive always played FPS type games, but this is a completely different approach. Im having fun.
Few things I wish i had known to do earlier....

If you do any of the maps to secure sites that take you to a manufacturing / other building surrounded by Sentinels... first shoot out the doors with your starship weapons, then fly away enough so that they sentinels deactivate. You can then go in and explore the base without being shot at the whole time.
Also, i am still fuzzy on the exact logic, but when trading ships, look at the class more so than stats. You can compare ships in the same type (explorer vs fighter vs exotic vs etc...) and same class to see which has better stats, but that doesnt necessarily work across types. I think i likely swapped a few ships for lesser variants because they had higher damage potential. I think damage potential and other stats can be affected by installed modules, which can skew the numbers when you could just install that rocket launcher and be at the same damage potential. For now, I have been trying to get one of each of the types and then try to get better class versions. Annoyingly, i think the only place you can see what type of ship you are in is the trade compare screen.
Punch (Q) + jet pack to move fast. You can alternate that with sprinting to get places faster.
Rusted Metal can be refined into Ferrite Dust, and at a high rate. The dust can be used in a number of things, as well as for building some base components(metal + concrete). The dust also appears to be a 1:1 refine to Pure Ferrite, which can be used for some of the fancier base structures. So basically, keep the rusted metal.

I am not even to making Exocraft yet, so i have a ways to go. Where do you learn the recipe for this? Also what are the ingredients?

You need 3200 quicksilver to buy a Void Egg from the QS vendor on the Anomaly, that starts a quest with several growth timers. Takes about 5 days with the waiting.
I would not recommend this for anyone that does not have a fair amount of experience due to the nature of the quests and the materials needed.
Walk-through's are around, If you need more info.

Of course people have found ways to cheat and some had the ship in less than a day. Whatever. Now they can go back to complaining about having nothing to do xD.

Once you have completed the first ship quest lines you can buy more eggs and hatch them immediately, and claim another ship for 10k nanites.

Here's the Soul Fish and the War Clam:

Some points - you can now pay nanites to increase the class of any ship - also the storage capacity. This used to be a huge issue on the past, not so much any more. A genuine S class will still have better stats than an upgraded to S class... but that should not matter much. You can also view the class of a ship from a distance. Just hover over it. as for combat and such, I used to use an explorer. the weapons, once upgraded are pretty much sufficient for anything. So if you get a ship you like, no need to continually hunt for others, unless you like the hunt. Upgrade and be done with it.

Guys,

I bought this game on a whim the first month it was out, paid full retail, and thought it was painfully boring.

Years later, not following any news about its development and updates, I have a few questions about the game:

-What are some of the main differences about the game now vs. when it first came out?

-What stands out as the main reason you may or may not play this game?

-Ultimately, is it worth redownloading and playing again?

Thanks

What part was boring?

It has improved a lot obviously, the launch was terrible.
But its still a Survivor/Builder/Explorer in a vast ever changing universe with really no purpose other than just doing what you want.

It has no end, in other words.

I just bought his last week, so i do not know what it was like when it first came out.
Main reason i play this game is that it has pieces of Subnautica, pieces of Minecraft, and pieces of Elite Dangerous, all of which I enjoy.
I like the base building/construction piece.
I like being able to fly around in my space ship, warp to other systems and explore the planets (along with seeing all of the crazy fauna... there was a cow with a fly's head earlier) and blow up pirates.
I like being able to upgrade myself and my ship (as well as get better ships).
If youdo not like games that do not have a tight story, then you will likely not like this game. It has quests, but the world is so open that it is almost its own distraction from the rest of the game.

Well put, that pretty much sums it up.

they have revamped the game in many many ways from the original launch. every fantasy image they promised and failed to deliver is now in the game, and more. All of the zones have been revamped, much of the grind has been absolutely removed and many of the complaints answered. It is still weak in some areas, its not a MMO, but there is a MP zone and you can coop missions originating there.

That is how you get new ships and such. Probably the pillars of the game have to do with story mission and improving gear. Improving gear used to be an incredible grind, but now there are lots of alternatives.

Make money, nanites and so other currency for use in the MP zone, forget what that is called. There are TONS of ways to make money and nanites with which you then improve gear.

Along the way you may build bases, make a farm, make a manufacturing plant, do trading routes, collect missions and complete them all at once... and on and on. You can now share bases with others and even get yours featured. The story and such is probably the weakest part of the game unfortunately.

The Multiplayer area is the one thing I have yet to try out (well, also the making a manufacturing plant and farming... I have not yet learned how to do that). I would actually say this is a single player MMO. It has a lot of the same pieces that MMOs have, especially the endless content/play forever as well as End Game content drought complaint. I am actually a little surprised there are multiple save slots, other than for doing the different game types ( i just play on Normal) I do not think i would start all over again. I have thought about starting up a Creative Mode game, but i think it would actually take away from my "Normal" mode game experience.

Beside what others have stated, it also fully supports playing in VR as well. (And not just as an afterthought, but well realized VR interfaces.)
