Fan Hubs Controlled by MB PWM.

I've noticed that the Fan Hubs that plug into the PSU SATA connector use a capacitor. Since the power is already coming from the SATA connector via the power supply, whey would they use a capacitor?

The hubs that plug directly ito the fan headers do not use them, since the power comes from the MB itself.

So what's the need for a cap on a SATA connector?
 
im not 100% but i been using deep cools 10 port fan hub it uses the sata power plug, it handles more fans then my commander pros and doesnt burn out with all 10 ports used with gentle typhoon fans.

What does your reply have to do with capacitors? Did I miss something?
 
Could be for being able to power alot of fans without blowing the fuses in hubs. Or killing fans.

What fuses? You can plug a fan directly into a 5V SATA connector and there is no problem. The fan hub plugs into the 5V SATA PSU connector.

A capacitor where? Are you talking about bypass capacitors on the power lines? It's to bypass hash that might be picked up by the SATA power cable itself. The inside of the PC is fairly noisy electrically and it's hard to have too many bypass caps.

Capacitors provide extra current to help fan motors start. When a fan motor starts it needs more than the rated current to get the motor turning. The capacitor acts as a short term battery that stores power then releases it when needed. The capacitors are not as large & dangerous as you find in a power supply but they are large enough to give the fans that extra jolt when needed.

That is not why the 2200 is there. It's for voltage stabilization.
 
good to know i use the deepcool sata based 10p fan hub for my builds as it seems to do better then my corsair commanders these days in terms of not burning out.

It's inside the unit itself.
