Displayport: EMI/Static "blankout" and Fiberoptic cables

This has been a minor issue on just about every DP monitor I've had - I get minor, half-second blankouts if I shift or rub my feet in a way that builds up or discharges static - it also blanks out if I touch my metal KB casing and get a static shock.

I have an LG 38GL950 coming on Monday and I think I'm going to order a fiber optic DP cable from Amazon and see if that stops the issue.

Has anyone noticed this or tried this solution?

What powers the transmitter/receiver (media converter) on the other end? Does a DP Sink have the ability to power a device on the port? Otherwise, power would probably have to come from the DP Source anyways.

I'm fairly certain that the DP and HDMI specs have a little voltage for transceivers and repeaters.

I think a lot of people have it and just assume it's a bad cable, power glitch, bad ground, static, etc.

When you think about how much bandwidth a DP 1.4 connection needs, that communication protocol must be pretty sensitive to interference and I don't think the cables run twisted pair or have much of a scheme to deal with induction noise or interference.

Pin 20 provides power at both source and sync. It's why you have make sure any cable you buy does not connect pin 20 at both ends.

Interesting - that would probably make it less likely.

I got my fiber optic cable on monday, but through a series of unfortunate miscalculations and missteps, my new monitor is delayed until Thursday.

Still, since I experience this effect on my current monitors, I think I will install the cable on my center 27" panel and see if I can induce the phenomenoa.

The cable is weirdly but (understandably) thin...

IT WORKS!

Zero blank out effect on the Fiber optic monitor, but I can still induce it on the copper wire DP monitors.
