So I have some Amazon gift cards from Christmas and have been thinking of upgrading my GPU. Currently I have a MSI 1080 (which I would sell) and I was thinking of getting a MSI or EVGA 2080 Super. My other thought is to wait until the new Nvidia cards come out around Summer I believe. I look forward to hearing your suggestions.

Personally I would upgrade now, and happily play games all the way in to the Fall and then see whats new and available both GPU and Game wise.

Yep. A 2080 Super wont just stop working when the new cards came out. Also Nvidia generally releases their flagship first and then mid-top range later. Meaning it could be months after a card that isn't even announced yet would be released. Buy a 2080 Super now, play games now, in X amount of months if the 3080 whatever is nice and you want it, sell the Super and upgrade.

My thoughts - Is your 1080 holding you back, based on your current resolution / FPS target, and games you're playing. If not, wait for the new crop of cards. If you're being held back (say, by 20% from your target FPS / resolution), then upgrade.

Do you have a specific game you're trying to get more performance for today? If yes, then I say upgrade. If no, then I say wait.

Nope so far every current game has been fine, BL3 gave the 1080 some work dipping into the 40's FPS but still able to play cranked up. I guess the main thing is 1: I have money to burn 2: I want to get as much as I can for my 1080 when I sell it 3: Im 52 and not getting any younger lol

What? Did you and the other people liking your comment actually forget that the 2080 TI was the first flagship to get released at launch in quite a long time?

That's what I was thinking too. For generations the non-TI models were first. And I only think this was reversed with the 2080 to not have useless RTX performance for the debut.

What did I say that was wrong? They released their top of the line first. They did the same thing with the 1080. The 1060 and 1070 didnt get released until later, and then the ti refresh. At the time of release the 1080 was the flagship. At the time of the 2080ti, that was the flagship.

You are making no sense at all. You said they generally release their Flagship first when they don't. The 1080 was not the flagship just like the 980 was not the flagship on the series before. The 980 ti and the 1080 ti came out well after the 980 and 1080 did so no they do not generally release their Flagship model first.

That's the weakest attempt I've seen at trying to explain away an honest mistake, just own up to it, geez. You're only making it worse.

Explain to me how the 1080 wasn't the flagship when it released.

Now tell me that the next card that Nvidia releases won't be their flagship.

How does this not make any sense to you? I'm not making anything worse, re-read my original post.

Do you even realize what you are saying? How hard is it for you to comprehend that the 1080 was not the flagship of the 10 series? The 1080 ti was the flagship of the 10 series. So again Nvidia does not typically release the flagship first like you keep saying they do.

The 1080ti didn't exist when the 1080 came out. The TI wasn't even announced until 9 months after the 1080 was released.

No kidding which is the whole point of of me telling you that they do not typically release the flagship first. The 1080 was released and then it was much later when the 1080 ti was released which was the flagship of that generation. It was the same thing when the 980 was released and then later than 980 ti was released which was the flagship of that generation. At this point you have to be trolling or completely clueless to what flagship means.

Explain to me how the 1080 was not the flagship when it was released. Go ahead. I want you to explain how every publication who reviewed it as “Nvidias flagship” at the time of review was wrong. Go ahead. I was going to sleep but I’m going to stay up to hear how a card that didnt exist was the actual flagship when the 1080 was released.

This can't even be real at this point. You are the person that said Nvidia typically releases their flagship first and that is simply not true. Any halfway reasonable person looking at the context there would take that to mean their fastest card of that generation. With the 9 series and 10 series they did not release their flagship models first.

Ok, what is Nvidias flagship RTX card then?

You are confusing flagship with the fastest card available at some given time. If they do not release a 2080 ti Super then the 2080 ti will have been the flagship for this generation. If they released a 3070 that beat the 2080 ti nobody would call that a flagship card as we would all know that higher end cards were coming.

I think you need to look up what flagship means in terms of technology. Go back to any review of the gtx 1080 and try and find one that doesn’t mention it being the flagship at the time of review. When the 3080 or whatever it’s going to be called is released, that will be Nvidias flagship model. If you are claiming that my usage of the word is wrong, then so are the hundreds of tech publications that used the exact wording “flagship” in their review of the 1080 and will do the same for the next top end card that Nvidia releases.

You are still not getting through your head what I'm saying to you. Again for the love of God you are the one that said Nvidia typically releases their Flagship first. Again in that context people would think you meant the fastest card of that generation. So bottom line is that Nvidia does not typically release their Flagship card first. As I just said, if they released a 3070 first that was faster than the 2080 ti no one other than you would call that the flagship.

1080 came out first. It was Nvidias flagship gpu.
1070 came out a couple weeks later.
1060 came out months later.
9 months later Nvidia released the 1080ti, their new flagship gpu.

When the 1080 was released it was considered Nvidias flagship. It was the top end of their 10 series lineup. When the 3080 is released it will be the flagship compared to the 3070 and 3060. It will likely have a faster version refresh released later in the 30 series lifecycle. It’s not that fucking hard to understand. I’m done for the night, you can go post on some other tech sites about how they messed up their reviews and how they used the word “flagship” incorrectly. Godspeed.

Oh so you're cussing at me now? And you still don't get the context here. When you say something like Nvidia releases their Flagship first then any person with any sense would think that you meant their fastest card of that generation because you're referring to past history. Anyway I'm done with you.

^And poor OP just wanted a little help deciding what/when to buy^ Agree to disagree guys. In my view, both statements are right. In an official sense, nVidia wants you to consider their fastest card at the time e.g. 1080 is their flagship; in a practical sense, we all know the "Ti" (or Titan) version is their real flagship for the model/chip line.

As for OP's original question, since your current card is not holding you back at your current resolution in games (the 1080 is still a very good card, after all), resist the urge to upgrade. I went from a 1080 to a 2080, then a VII, then a 2080 Super. Those last three cards were very superfluous and wasted money to be honest if I was playing at 1440p or below. Save that money for the new line up, big Navi or Ampere.

No kidding I was like WTF when I saw that this morning. Thanks for the advice, I decided to wait for the next generation of Nvidia cards. Your absolutely right about the 1080, it’s still able to plow through anything I throw at it. If any of the rumors are true about Nvidia Ampere/Hopper being 70-75% faster it will be worth the wait.

Unless you want RTX and/or 4K now, I'd say wait.

I have a GTX1070Ti and I was thinking about upgrading to a RTX2080Super, but since I already waited this long, I think I can wait few more months.

Here's *roughly* what you can expect if you decide to jump now:

3900X 2080S 1080 1440p.png

3900X 2080S 1080 4K.png

Get a 2080S now or wait for the 3000 series: the choice is yours, armed with as much info as possible.

I appreciate the advice from everyone. I think as has been said since Ive waited this long what’s a few more months. If I was looking at a year wait I probably would get the 2080S. But the 1080 is still doing very well and I have no real reason to upgrade it other than having the itch to do so.

We all understand the evil upgrade itch.

I'm on a 1080 as well, craving a bit more. I just figure I'll wait for a 3080 and ride that out for a couple of years. I have a feeling leaps in performance after 7nm ampere will be very small in the years to come, making a 3000 series card a good aim for something that will last a few years/

Just my half cent

I can attest to that. I've been putting off my upgrade itch since the 2700X and 1080Ti days.

Have a wish list full of current gen goodies including a 3700X and 2070S, but I think I'm going to hold off until next year's tax return and jump to a Ryzen 4000 series and an nVidia 3000 or Radeon Navi2 series.

Go for it. Part expire as soon as you buy them anyway. I chose to take the leap and get a 2080ti that I didnt necessarily need simply because I could finally get and enjoy it. Waiting can be good but hell it's fun just plugging in a new monster card a going to town with it

I have a maximum of $600 I’m willing to throw at Nvidia next Gen because I have a 27” 1440p 144hz GSYNC . My 3800x thirst......
