CBS Makes Star Trek: Picard Pilot Free On YouTube 'For a Limited Time'

That said, the show has never been shy about massive retcons, no matter how much it messes things up.

Yeah, TBH I was thinking of the transition from Romana I to Romana II when I wrote that.

It's still dumb, but it's part of why I said I consider the show a fairy tale and not SF.

It's science fantasy and the retcons are bad enough at this point that a reboot should be in order. Too bad I don't trust anyone to not make it horrible.

Can you read? He specifically said Nazis, not Germans. And good, fuck the Nazis, they should be mocked and the people that look up to them. Personally I don't care how woke material is as long as it's entertaining. I don't weep for right wing cultists and their perpetual whining of the Hollywood left. Star Trek was created by a liberal for liberals, not for card carrying Nazis who cry foul when there's women, gays or poc on TV. His son is an exec for Picard so he's carrying on his father's vision. Nobody is forcing any of you to watch it or even derail multiple threads about these shows with your bullshit.
You know nothing about Star Trek and Gene's vision. Sorry, but that much is evident.

I am annoyed that they decided to turn the Federation into a bunch of useless assholes. I have that in real life, don't need it in Star Trek.
This is also another point. If you're against Brexit and Trump, as of why Patrick Stewart may accept to be part of Picard, why should you see the same rant again in series and movies, like as if you didn't get it. Super double punishment.
I used to see movies that were fun to watch and that I wasn't in pain after I watched them.

You know damn well that not all German soldiers are nazies, and in WW2 games all enemies are called nazies. You seem to think that only actual nazies want WW2 germans correctly and realistically represented when everyone would benefit from a better plot.

Nobody is forcing you to watch is still not an argument for anything. How could I have an opinion on it if I didn't watch it? And why am I not allowed to express my opinion?

Do you say only your opinion is valid, and anyone's who dislikes the show is bullshit?
Problem in games and movies are quite different.
Original Wolfenstein was kind of a joke of a game, very funny to play and very schematic. The limitations of the hardware on that point made the grotesque understandable and acceptable.
Because of the very real life looking and details in the new reboots and all the mods, the franchise is not any more about grotesque and fun. So this is completely another point vs remade franchise in movies and series. I remember that original Id Software devs were not very confident at that time to make a new Wolfenstein where you would be killing people, out of the new Quake engine when they were okay to use it in Doom.

The one thing I am intrigued by is a Romulan with an Irish accent.
Announcer: "Next week. Pointy-eared people drunk on blue ale singing Irish pub songs."
Could be a thing. Maybe even put a Nazi helmet on this new Spock so we can all wax nostalgic.

MISTER Pickard! I'd like to have a word with you!

Thats all I can picture and hear in my head when I read about the Romulan gal working with/for Picard.

Gentleman Johnny Pickard is off to save the day or something.

MISTER Pickard! I'd like to have a word with you!

Reminds me of the cliffhanger when they went back in time to 19th Century San Francisco and pretended to be actors. The landlady thought they were riff-raff just because of their claimed job, because actors were thought to be mostly shiftless at that point in time.

Finally some legitimate criticism. I agree with what you pointed out, I noticed those shortcomings as well. I'm also not happy with the way they completely neutered the Romulans but I'm going to continue watching it because it's the best Trek we've got right now.

Not sure if it's the best Trek around... season 3 of The Orville should air later this year, too.

Eh. Was S2 better than S1? The show didn't really grab me in the first season and I baled after the first few episodes. There's an obvious passion for Trek there, but I didn't find it all that well done.

I once heard someone talking about anime and saying it seemed like a lot of them put in gratuitous fan service to get the show green-lit (I guess under the theory that the money people wouldn't do so without that extra lure) but then tended to drop it after a few episodes. I see the lowbrow comedy in The Orville in a similar way.

Yeah, a lot of dumb fart jokes but if you look beyond that it was actually a pretty good show--and a few things weren't treated as one-offs, but had repercussions later, like the plot line with Bortas' daughter.

In Canada so I can only watch it on Crave, don’t feel like subbing to that again. I’ll just wait for them to release it on Bluray or iTunes then snag it there.

No thanks. Too woke for me from what I hear. Tired of leftist politics in every single show. Even BoJack Horseman had to diss white people in it's final season.

Honestly, if you are going to completely let the political leanings of actors dictate what you watch, it's time to turn off the TV - 99% of actors are leftists. They're just not all preachy about it. Yes, I already knew SPS is crazy leftist. Don't care. He's an awesome actor.

I watched it. I liked it. Didn't see an obvious political agenda being pushed. Has three of the greatest things from TNG rolled into an interesting plot (Picard, Data and the Borg). Has the Irish actress Orla Brady in it, who was great in Enter the Badlands. Female leads being pushed is the only thing that whiffs of the #Metoo movement. I can deal with that.

Too bad's it's on CBS All Access. Pass!

I watched it. Here's my review:

Alex Kurtzman has struck again. Star Trek: Picard has begun, and it is just as horrendous as I thought it would be.

You might think this is better than Star Trek: Discovery, because it doesn’t have a black woman who is the most important person in the universe, but it really is not any better. It stems from the same stupid plan to turn Star Trek into an imbecilic fantasy franchise.

This isn’t Star Trek, it is just dumb action-adventure sci-fa.

What’s more, it isn’t good action-adventure sci-fa. It is mindless, dopey crap that panders to the lowest common denominator. The only problem for CBS is that the lowest common denominator isn’t interested in Star Trek. They’re not even interested in Star Wars anymore. They want Marvel movies and Netflix series that don’t have the baggage of a 60-year-old franchise that used to appeal to men of taste.

The first episode of Picard features a digression into series lore that would leave any non-fan too confused to continue watching, and leave any fan too enraged to continue watching out of anything other than rage and resentment (known as “the path to the dark side,” as I expect Picard to break the fourth wall and remind viewers of halfway in episode three).

The game plan for this new series of Star Trek shows is to cannibalize the lore of the previous series for bits and pieces that Kurtzman thinks he can build into something that will appeal to a larger audience, capable of justifying bloated budgets. After the backlash that Discovery created within fan communities, and its complete lack of appeal to any such larger audience (the viewing numbers are secret, but we have reason to believe they’re not good), Kurtzman thought that bringing back the character of Jean-Luc Picard would somehow endear fans of the franchise and that they would be slower to express their hatred, but the reality is that Picard is only beloved as a part of a show that Kurtzman is not interested in making. Putting Picard into the dark, boring, CGI-driven soap opera spectacle of nu-Trek is like putting Homer Simpson into Game of Thrones.

It does not help that the actor that plays Picard, Patrick Stewart, is as old as Joe Biden and comes across as just as senile. I have nothing against old people (actually, I do, but what I am saying would be true either way). This comes across as elderly abuse, having a man this old star in a television show. Surely, this old man has things he’d rather be doing. We are left wondering if Stewart may in fact be a pedophile, and Kurtzman threatened to drop his pizza tapes if he didn’t humiliate himself in this half-baked scheme.

So what is the show?

That is really irrelevant, but I’ll tell you anyway.

It starts with a white woman making out with a black man. (She later turns out to be a half-Filipina hapa, but she looks like a white woman.) The black man quickly ends up dead.

The woman is some kind of magical figure, who Picard must try to save. By the end of the episode, he’s failed to save her and she has died, so he must instead save her twin sister. His quest to save this magical woman is the plot of the show. To make this save, he enlists a black woman who is – you guessed it – magical for some reason.

The plot as it stands is the same thing we’ve seen a million times: a fantastic adventure of a rag-tag band of rough but endearing heroes on a quest to save a “chosen one” figure upon whom rests the fate of the galaxy.

The gutting of the lore of Star Trek is sickening, and simply unnecessary. If these people want to make a show about an 80-year-old man going on an amazing CGI journey through the cosmos, only to find that the real journey was the friends he made along the way, they should just do that. There is no reason to tie this crap to Star Trek. It is cruel and obscene. Many Star Trek fans hate this Nu-Trek, and the lore does nothing to bring in new fans.

This show is not interesting. It is simply “Discovery: Part II.”

Star Trek is a show that uses an episodic format to introduce interesting scenarios which must be solved by the characters using logic, science, social engineering, diplomacy and philosophy. This is a uniquely engaging form of entertainment, as the viewer is himself put into the scenario and asked to try to figure out a solution to the problem.

Nu-Trek is a soap opera that relies on shoddy “character development,” which takes the form of sappy, saccharine dialogue and gross, over-the-top displays of emotion by the largely female cast. The plot is largely an afterthought, simply allowing the staging of emotional scenes or action spectacle. The disregard that the writers show for their own plot is shocking, and leads one to wonder how they can expect any viewer to respect what they themselves have no respect for.

There is no sell-by date on the original episodic Trek format. There is no reason that it wouldn’t be appealing to new and old audiences now. However, it would not capture the same audiences as a Game of Thrones or Stranger Things. It is a niche market. Moving from an episodic format to a serialized format is being sold as “a way to tell new types of stories,” but what it actually is is a way to dumb down the show and remove everything that made it interesting and replace it with the same cheap “drama” and CGI explosion-mongering of every other show currently clogging up the tubes with sordidness.

At one point in the show, the elderly Picard has a meta moment and states: “I never really cared for science fiction. I guess I just didn’t get it.” This is clearly the show’s writers talking.

Nu-Trek is not science fiction. It is a fantasy soap opera, where characters have magic powers, set in a fantasy universe, where deus ex machina is taken to an absurd extreme for the sake of the convenience of the writers, who are lazy, entitled losers.

Have you ever watched a single episode of Star Trek? Trek has ALWAYS been heavily political and heavy left.
TNG was definitely welfare state ish. But the Original (pre-queen) Borg was an anti-collectivist pro-individualist statement if there ever was one. So you could say it was Center Left but not Left.

Also there's a difference between broaching political issues, presenting both sides somewhat fairly and even often never picking a side,
and propaganda ripped form the headlines with a specific side clearly picked.

There's a difference between presenting an argument and presenting propaganda. People souped in propaganda can't tell the difference, though.

I agree totally about Discovery, but I'm not making my mind for Picard. Would need to watch further, like episode 3 and 4. If this is going nuts, I will definitely agree. I already think, episode 2 is better.
In fact the mirror universe was some kind of anti-science pure distraction in the series. Making it the main subject in the series is pure nonsense.
Some people didn't like Star Trek Enterprise, but I found it quite ok, fitting the line, apart from some little bad acting of some characters.

Watched the first episode. Wanted to like it. Production values are very high. Story felt like fan-fic. Most glaring impression: Patrick Stewart is playing Patrick Stewart, not Jean Luc Picard. Story feels like its about to turn into Star Trek III with a touch of The Bourne Identity. Typical "bad tv script" shit happens too often, bad guys with super powers can't seem to get the job done, Patrick Stewart can't run up a flight of stairs but survives a nuclear explosion with a mild headache..wakes up on his couch, no investigation, no big drama about a huge explosion happening....tsk tsk tsk not relevant to the human element of the story I guess....*sigh*.....whatever. It wasn't preachy or overtly woke, it just wasn't good or.....good.

I felt zero sense of nostalgia, so I thank them for my free episode and wish them luck, but this isn't my Star Trek.
ST III? Now that's scathing.

Proof that is was solely for the sake of wokeness? Missy was the best, most complex, version of the Master in modern Who. Easily the only female character Moffat ever wrote reasonably well and her being the master worked amazing because of the relationship between the Master and the Doctor. Her being some random new character with no connection to the Doctor or the audience would have never worked. It wouldn't even have worked as well if she had turned out to be The Rani or Rassilon. Michelle Gomez's take felt so authentic.
You mean post Coupling, right?

Spoiler Free Episode 3 thoughts (posting as I watch)

Gotta say, I really dig the Starfleet uniforms in this series.
Obvious evil dude is obvious.
New character feels like he belongs in Firefly.
Common problem with modern sci-fi that exists here: Incredibly rough, and obvious, exposition.
This series continues to be dumb. Still not at Voyager level dumb, but it gets close sometimes.
Not much to talk about without spoilers here. More happened than in Episode 2, but it feels like the series is in a "holding pattern" until something interesting happens.
Pacing continues to be a problem. Dialog continues to be rough. Picard and his two housekeepers are the best characters so far. The main villains continue to be incredibly poorly written.

Spoilerific Episode 3 thoughts (posting as I watch)

While I like that they frame a lot of the people not wanting to go with the new rescue plan as simply being afraid, I'm still not super happy with how they're treating Starfleet here. I think they're going along with the general idea that a big organization like that isn't going to remain the same forever and it does make sense that big changed would come after things got even more heavily militarized during the Dominion War it still feels like a betrayal of what Star Trek is. Hopefully they actually do something with it other than it simply being a backdrop to explain Picard's current situation.

"JL"? I don't care how casual and friendly they are, there is absolutely no way a fellow officer would refer to Picard that way. I also don't see Picard ever allowing it in the first place.

So....Why is Raffi fired because Picard resigned? To punish Picard? Because they're friends? That's several levels of stupid.

This EMH is nowhere near as good as Robert Picardo.

Why send a hit squad to kill Picard? Would it not make more sense to get a single assassin that could sneak in? This plan seems dumb.

Also dumb: This Borg stuff. Why can the Borg suddenly tell the future and what is this shared mythology thing?

"See that you don't fall in love"..Oh, so that's where this story is going to go. Ugh. Please don't.

Wait...Why is there a Romulan samurai dude in the preview for the next episode?

That was Mrs. Carmichael at her boarding house who called him Mister Pickard. Stuck with me all these years.

Anyone who remembers that 2 parter will now sob quietly inside for the death of reasonably-intelligent Science Fiction on TV.......shit even Whoopi Goldberg was well-written in that story, the writers took their time to ask "Well the audience is going to ask 'but why did...' and then they tried to include a line or two to explain all those away, at least they tried to. That episode had actually bad "bad guys", a very cool element of time travel, but also broken up by brief moments of real humor.....Data with the Anvil, the aforementioned "acting troupe" cover they used, little interludes of brevity to mask the dark overall tone of the episode. Sure it was basically a ripoff of the Edith Keeler TOS episode but like a good Homage watch, it wasn't a copy, it was inspired-by.......but today? Shit just happens, then get right to the brow-beating lectures. Everything is the fucking Walking Dead. No Hope in the beginning, no Hope in the end.

And they wonder why people roll their eyes and go back to YouTube. Hollywood in 2020 is basically the same idea as the great Video Game Crash of 82.....nothing but shovel-ware with all the money spent on advertising the box-art.

Just watched episode 3. So this was really bad. Back to square one and it seems this is not going to get better. I wonder if this is going to be worse than Discovery. Probably.
First thing, I can summarize the whole 3 episodes in 3 lines. There is real lack of action and events and there is plenty of unnecessary long stuff, as if the producers were only motivated to sell time so there could be plenty of ads in it. Patrick Stewart who looks old and tired is also responsible of this. Because all the characters around him must fit into his actions and his slow speech. It's a bit as if this was made for slow minded people... just like those Brazilian series where several characters repeat the same phrase several times in case you didn't hear or listen so you don't miss anything is ever there was something happening.
Now there's also action, like real action, and this is really ridiculous because Picard takes part in some fights and Stewart is really not fit to do that. Would you send you're 80 years old grandma to fight a big and trained guy in armor and holding a lethal laser weapon with her bare hands ? And much to say about the slim little females vs big muscled men. But hey, the little female is Vulkan, but the big guy is Romulan...
Now, something else : the technology. There's plenty of virtual gadgets. This is so much VR glasses and touch screen like, as if they would like to sell in no time some new game based on this... that I won't buy. Even if this may look cool to some kids, this is all retrofitted technology from TNG where everything virtual looked and felt real, and had some sense. Not even mentioning the lack of imagination.
As GhostCow mentioned, there is no story or plot per episode but this is in fact a mini-serie, a very long one, where a 1 hour slow paced TV Movie would fit in 20 episodes. So it's so slow, you would not even want to watch after the non-cliffhanger of the end of the last episode. You just don't care about the next boring episode. You can probably jump over a couple of episodes and you may not lose anything, since everything is reminded in 15 seconds at the beginning and kind of summarizes the action to come at the end.
So I'm utterly pissed by Picard, clearly not what one would expect. I have Amazon Prime, it's for free, but this is too boring and time consuming. Will read the opinions at the end of the season to see if there is something about it finally.
This is diminishing all the performance that was made on TNG.

Watch again Voyager. It was in fact much better even if nothing compared to TNG.
I disagree : less hapened than in episode 2. We don't get more info at all. It's a complete stall in the story line.
You just get some ridiculous fighting and shooting to please some dumb kids, some unnecessary virtual tablet time spent, very slow and repeating talking, and repeating action from episode 2. You can just jump from episode 2 to 4.
Not sure there is anything good in these series, including Patrick Stewart. Looks much more 90 than 80.

Because it was the movie's creators talking and they meant it and did it.

Did you watch the movie? Rey completely rejects Kylo Ren's philosophy. Rey is the character the audience is supposed to side with and she chooses the past. By taking the Jedi texts and by getting Luke to being a Jedi again, she is embracing the past. It is very clear that the audience is NOT supposed to agree with Ren or his ideas. The movie was absolute garbage, but people really should learn to dislike movies for what they are, not what they twist them into being.

Umm, they've destroyed all the characters and themes from the original, shat on them pretty hard. Rey killed the Skywalker line, among other things, and you can't kill the past more symbolically (and literally) than that.

episode 3 was good and bad.

good: the uniforms look nice. Much better than those tacky blue uniforms in discovery that look so un-star-trek-like (along with a lot of other aesthetics)

bad: some person wearing sunglasses that look like..well not very futuristic.
curse words (in the 2nd episode too). I seriously doubt people would be using these words hundreds of years into the future. Slang has changed a lot compared to even 70 years ago. Just completely takes me out of the scene when a person says bro/dude/OMG/shit/fuck or whatever. The writing and dialog between characters has been dumbed down compared to other star trek series.

stuff like one person saying "pro tip" ...I mean really? ugh. Right then and there I realized this series was catered to the teens/20s crowd

A person basically vaping. Again, must be catering to the young kids these days

I watched E3 and I'm enjoying the "new" Trek although there were minor parts of the story that annoyed me as you pointed out:

1. Vaping (why was this there?)
2. Modern slang (although this can be excused because it is a TV show and the wider audience needs to relate)
3. Romulan commodore w/sunglasses looked really weird and out of place like a cosplayer gone wrong.

I get a very Firefly vibe from this rather than traditional trek and while hardcore Trek fans may hate this, I'm more flexible and open minded about where this can go. The acting however did seem really avg/below avg to me compared to the TNG cast but that's to be expected as this show is brand new and everyone is learning their roles. As for Picard talking/acting very frail, from what I read online that is on purpose. Maybe that will change as the show progresses but I doubt it. Look at our orange president, he's not much younger than Sir Patrick and that dude can talk for days loudly so I doubt this is a case of Stewart being frail. I'm looking forward to seeing the story flesh out faster though as the pacing seems a bit slow right now.

To be honest, they should never have involved Patrick Stewart in this series at all and called it something else entirely. He's just there for nostalgia purposes to draw in fans but he looks/feels very out of place. For hardcore or old school Trek fans, they should stick with The Orville, it is a lot more like classic Trek than new Trek is and I'm fine with that. The Trek of old is clearly dead, it's not coming back and whether this new vision of Trek can survive on it's own merits is yet to be seen but I suspect the market for the old campy trek with tons of technobabble just isn't there for today's market. I don't know how many of you interact daily with Gen Z but I do everyday (esp while gaming) and I can guarantee you old Trek wouldn't appeal to them.

I think people have a valid complaint about a dystopian future vs. the utopian future not being star trek. I think a one-off like DS9 doesn't wreck the Trek Universe. In fact DS9 only worked because its predacessors weren't dystopian. But if it's all going to be this, then it does wreck the Trek Universe.

Then the question comes around to why not do a new Universe than undo an existing one?

5150Joker : oh no, not the Orville. This looks like a bad Red Dwarf revised to look like Star Trek. Much more pitiful than funny.
@Jagger100:DS9 was completely in line with Star Trek. Voyager was not completely bad but quite boring.
I agree with the alternate universe, maybe not ours, but should keep on being Scifi, fantasy. Star Wars is fantasy and even George Lucas said he was inspired by the story and philosophy from the Lord of the Rings. He also picked up some graphics inspiration from Valerian comics.
When I looked at Star Trek, the original series, I found it was over-selling modern utopia. And I was a Kid. I liked better at that time Lost in Space, which I've seen younger. But the most cult film I liked then, as a reference, was Forbidden Planet (Roby was reused in Lost in Space as en evil robot). 2001 Space Odysey was kind of 90% realistic + 10% fantasy, nearly not scifi, and actually based on real projects of that time. There were some other kind of Scifi series which were more fantasy and I clearly understood the difference even as a kid (4/5 years old) like the Land of the Giants. Also The Invaders was a clear political and espionage serie, the invaders being the communists and those plotting in the dark against us (people). Rewatching this could be very uncomfortable to the left of today. They would feel their little finger growing stiff.
There are also the supermarionation movies that were really great, like Fireball XL5 (I think the first serie I was aloud to watch on TV) and Thunderbirds. If you look at better than Star Trek OS and on par with TNG there is the Thunderbirds series, not with real people but that could have been, you wouldn't see the difference.
Nearly all those movies were selling some Utopia very close to Star Trek's, in a way. If you don't like the actual left, forced equality, gender laws, feminist views, positive action giving privileges to what they call "disadvantaged" people, with all the ecologist stuff and rules against economical evolution and efficiency at work, rewriting history etc, you won't like those old series.
And all those new series are about this agenda of the new left and those people are extremists, so you can see that in their movies and series and there are very few which are not under their control.

The thing which probably bothers me the most about this new show is the pretty obvious lack of a science consultant. Things are so bad that I'm actually starting to miss Voyager's technobabble. Also, the design of the new ship(s) is horrible. It looks like both Starfleet and the Romulans took many steps backwards compared to the elegance of the D'Deridex warbird, Defiant, Intrepid, Prometheus, Akira, and all the other ship classes we knew and lovel. It truly is no longer Starfleet when they can't design good-looking new ships any more.

The real 'Trek of this generation is probably The Expanse.

Don't know what you're talking about. I'm planning to clone myself from one of my farts' electrons and live till Star Trek becomes reality.
