LG 38GL950G - 37.5" 3840x1600/G-Sync/175Hz

You used to run a triple headed rig, when did you give it up and do you ever regret it? I've been running it for 8 years and, well, it's hard to let it go :D

For me the hardcore days of 3-5 display Eyefinity/Surround setups with 4-Way SLI/Crossfire are over. Multiple displays IMO were more of a priority in years past when there was no such thing as high resolution fast refresh display. You were basically forced to use multiple individual displays to create it and needed serious horsepower to do so.

Now with Multi-GPU becoming a fading memory and bezel'less beautiful curved relatively high resolution displays on the market that can be run with a single high-end GPU, for me as I get older it's a no-brainer. On my crazy setups I'd spend more time building them as a hobby and trying to get everything to work than actually plying games. ;)

That's what I've been thinking, but there are some games where the extremely wide FOV really adds to the immersion.

Can you easily run this at custom resolution 3840x1440 or even x1200 for a wider FOV and maybe more fill rate - and without vertical stretching?

38 inches is a big difference over 34. I use a 34 at the office (34WK95U) and I’m always happy to be home to my screen again even with lower res. You can see various comparisons and it’s quite marked.

What I’d really like is something the height of a 32” but with the extra width of 21:9 (god it bugs me calling it that, as it’s nothing close). Let’s be more accurate, an anomorphic, UW 6K (6880x2880), 43” with rec 2020 and 1600+ nit, thats perfect for me. I suspect I’ll be waiting a while but it’s on the edge of what they can do now, graphics cards are nowhere near though.

y’all freaked me out with the warranty, one good thing we get here in return for our insane pricing is a 3 year warranty at least. I’ll have moved on by then

I just tested both, works perfect 1:1.

Thanks - that's really helpful, at least I can run reasonable wider modes for racing games - I think I'd be fine with the loss of a little vertical - in any case, it's nice to know it's an option.

It's in my Amazon cart - as soon as my Tax return drops (literally any day), I'm pulling the trigger. My main game is Apex Legends and if I can get 70-80fps in 7680x1440 on a 1080Ti, I'm sure I can manage playable fps on this beast until the 3080Ti drops.

Yeah people really underestimate how much of a difference a few inches make.

There's an enormous difference between a 27" monitor and a 31.5" monitor even though it's "only" 4". It's because people don't really factor in that monitors are the diagonal distance of the two opposite sides/corners. 27" 16:9 monitors are tiny. They're the height of like 22" 4:3 monitors. They're nothing.

I wonder if Simon would mention the vignetting problem.

Mentions the reports, doesn't have it on his sample, just one corner that has drop off.

I will say though, obviously they always calibrate to pro settings so is probably fair bit dimmer than most people have their screen at, which would stop it being so obvious. For me, at the same brightness I do have it but as I covered elsewhere, it doesn't bother me for reasons covered elsewhere in the thread.

I won't share too much else to respect the need to monetise, but this jumped out, "The fastest IPS panel we've measured to date " - 3.8ms GTG at 160hz. Gets to 2.7 with the fastest mode but as has been covered, that's unusable.

Also, adaptive sync on displayport is supported (I didn't know that), so Freesync works. Not that I can imagine many would pay the G-Sync tax and use AMD cards.

Overall they say it's excellent and the best IPS Gaming panel they've tested.

If you're on the fence maybe sign up to patreon and throw 'em a few bucks to read it in advance. $5 against $1800 is pretty good and as always they're a lot more detailed, and informed than the "I GOT THIS FREE AND ITS AMAZING!!!11111oneoneone" crowd

Pretty sure he'd cover that under the uniformity section of the review.

Pretty sure that a lot of people won't even notice it because they don't look for such things because no one expects horrific problems that fundamental with 2 grand monitors.

or alternatively, it’s not that bad / noticeable

The perfect is the enemy of the good.

I'm 100% sold and plan to order one in the next week.

the thing i'd like to know is how much worse would my FPS be in for example COD:MW with this res on a 1080ti, when i get around 100-120 on a 3440x1440 (not maxed out details ofc), how much worse would it get with +1.2mil pixels? down by 10? 20? 50? anyone with the screen and 1080ti here? :)

waiting for the next gen from nvidia..... :(

Well damn - tax return just dropped, but Amazon is saying a week to deliver this thing :(

Best Buy is saying 2/14 and B&H seems to be OOS.
For this kind of coin, I was hoping for near instant gratification....

Ok I am in a bit of a deilemma.

My local stores have this monitor in-stock and ready for shipping and I can purchase it now. But they also listed the PG43UQ and it will be arriving soon, I don't know if I should wait 3 weeks for that monitor or get this LG rite now?

The thing is, I want fast response because I do alot of PUBG gaming. The fact that the LG is HDR400 vs the PG43UQ HDR1000 might not matter because the latter has only 8 dimming zones anyway, no fald and not alot of dimming zones, so I am unsure how good HDR1000 is on a monitor without local dimming. I know it is pretty good on my LG E6 Oled.

And for that aspect I was going to play SP HDR games on the LG CX when it comes out and PUBG on this LG 38GL950 if I get it now.

Just wondering if anyone has any opinions on weather I should get the LG 38gl950g for its blistering fast response so I can enjoy PUBG with a bit more speed, or wait for the PG43UQ for better contrast and HDR1000?

I already have the XG438Q and althought it has slow black transitions and the black blur is noticable, I did not mind it and overall thought it is an excellent monitor, especially the contrast. Having said that, the LG has a low contrast ratio in comparison, which is the only weakness I really see compared to my current XG438Q.

Which store?

Also, the Asus is basically a TV, doesn't look like a desktop class device to me...

I guess I have to order this beast - my wife is going to flip, but I promised to sell my PG279s if I keep it. Still - y'all know what I'm talking about...

It looks like I can get it faster from Beachcamera or Walmart(Beachcamera) - anyone recommend them or recommend avoiding them? I've bought some monitor arms from them before - they seemed fine...

Edit: Read a few Reddit accounts of people buying high dollar TVs from BC and having issues. Didn't sound fun. Amazon it is.

I am in Australia, so local Australian store have them online. Plenty available.

I have the XG438Q and did not think of it as a TV, I really like this monitor but just want something with a bit more speed n smoothness for PUBG like the 38GL950G.

But I also want to keep as much IQ as possible with the speed, hence why I don't go for 240Hz TN panels.

What I found interesting about the TFTCentral review is that they measured approximately half the amount of overshoot of the TechPowerUp video review linked earlier. Makes this monitor look even better!

Good review overall, awesome g2G response times... still want ULMB though. Wonder if they'll add strobing to the Freesync version.

I doubt it. Seems to be largely the same feature set and then there is the "business" version with different looks and probably a different OSD with PbP mode etc.

It's a real shame that so little effort is put into strobing when even TVs start to have actually decent BFI systems. I feel like the desktop display industry does the bare minimum all the time and somehow can't even reuse what they built in previous iterations.

I used Lightboost on my VG248QEs back in the day and it was interesting, but I didn't love it - it seems to be tied in to some features of NV-3D but I'm not sure.

I would like to know if this beast can do 3D?

I have the 2nd Gen Nvidia 3D kit - have not used it in years, but it's fun to play with. The Original Burnout Paradise was light weight enough to run at 7680x1440 in 3D and maintain the frame rate.

Seems like any Gsync display that can do 120Hz should do 3D, but I don't know....

I am hoping it turns into the 34GK950F vs 34GK950G situation where the freesync version has strobing but g-sync does not. It happens sometimes but I'm not holding my breath either :)

Anyways, I was holding out for the PG43UQ but couldn't resist much longer and pulled the trigger on the LG today. Should be here sometime next week.

I may still get the PG43UQ and sell the LG if that is better.

Seems like they dropped the price a bit, B&H now showing $1599 https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1488942-REG/lg_38gl950g_b_38_ultragear_nano_ips.html/

It's showing on LG's site now as well so likely other retailers will update soon https://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-38GL950G-B-gaming-monitor

Oh damn, I have the worst timing in the world. Mine is to be delivered from Amazon tomorrow (Monday 2/10) for $1799

Does anyone have any idea what I can do? Amazon hasn't lowered the price and I hear they no longer have a 7 day price guarantee but that sometimes people can get it on big items like TVs...

At $1,500 it's starting to leave ass rape territory. $1,200 would get into the "feels fair" territory.

I like my monitor, but really, $1,800 was too much for a display with that vignetting problem. Should have basically been perfect with no downsides at that price with cherry picked displays with solid backlight uniformity.

With tax and the fiber optic DP cable it was over $2k

I tried to get Amazon to do a price match / adjustment but they wouldn't do that - they contacted UPS and turned the package around as a refused shipment.

I was so excited to get it tomorrow that I almost just ate the money but it's too much and doing it this way helps on the domestic front.

I'm wondering how fast B&H is if I order it from them...

Meanwhile in Finland its price has dropped from an absurd 2500 euros down to 2000. Which is still too much.

Its some promotional thing LG is doing by dropping the price. It is going back up once the promotional units have been allocated.

Our prices in AU just went back up a few days ago.

I don't think B&H ever got any stock in. Their page has literally said "coming soon" since August. You may be waiting a while...

Yeah, Adorama also shows $1599 and also shows no stock. I should have just accepted delivery. :(

I guess that's possible, where are the promotional units? If it's some short term promo, why would LG lower the price on their website? You don't usually do that for temporary price events.

Now you'll never get one.

Yeah, now I'm stuck in this weird limbo of "I'm sure the new price will show up any day now" with no real way to know and no real criteria where I just give up and reorder.

If I reorder from Amazon, I can get it Thursday.

Annnnnnnnnd - the Fibre Optic DP cable arrived just in time to mock my pain. Ugh.

Best Buy has it in stock. They price match so maybe just try contacting CS with the LG link

Otherwise the pricing on their site will probably update soon. When LG runs deals like this all the authorized dealers are supposed to update pricing, it just takes some time.

Good idea.

Here are the US Vendor Links for anyone else trying to get the new price:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07ZS1DZM1/ (was being sold by beachcamera.com)

https://www.adorama.com/lot38gl950gb.html2/10/2020 - Adorama website says $1599 - the rep said they have been on order and could be here anytime "in the next couple weeks"

Best Buy will price match within the return period - now I'm wondering if some of these vendors are showing out of stock to thwart price matching.

I'm going to call them.
