Exciting. Hope it's legit. Still wish AMD could come back though

"Volta and Turing share lots of similarities with Turing offering a more refined version of Volta. If the 70-75% performance increase figures are close to the real thing, then we can definitely see close to 50% performance gain or even higher in the consumer variants. Do note that previous rumors had already said that NVIDIA's next-generation GPUs would offer 50% extra performance while being twice as efficient as Turing GPUs.

In a previous interview, NVIDIA's CEO, Jensen Huang, had confirmed that the majority of the orders for their next-generation 7nm GPU will be handled by TSMC while a small portion will be sent to Samsung for production. Finally, Jensen was asked about the launch timeframe of their next-generation 7nm GPU, but he simply replied that it wasn't a convenient time for them to disclose any date at the moment. We know from a recent interview with NVIDIA's CFO, Colette Kress, that they want to surprise everyone with their own 7nm GPU announcement, but they are waiting for the right time to do so."

Do note that previous rumors had already said that NVIDIA's next-generation GPUs would offer 50% extra performance while being twice as efficient as Turing GPUs.

If they said its 50% faster at Turing RayTracing operations....I'd go "Seems Legit..", but 50% overall performance? Not a chance in hell, that's leaving billions on the table when you could release 2 gens of cards at 25% overall increases (like with every new Ti release) and buy yourself more time to develop the next big thing.....and fund that research, Nvidia knows when we see 25% improvements, we'll shop.

Also, if Nvidia releases some 50% improvement part...congrats you've just maxxed out 4k/60 and probably 4k/120, or 1440p/240+....with breathing room...so why would you need to upgrade again until 8K monitors are a thing.....Nvidia wants people in a predictable upgrade cycle...not a huge rush and then a long lull period waiting for fancy-effects or higher resolution panels to come along and get people wanting to upgrade to faster parts again......its the Scotty factor: They'll give us just enough to let us think highly of their new part without giving us so much that we don't need to come back to them in 1.5 or 2 years time with that itch. Yeah, they're basically dealers.

NVidia will release big Ampere for enterprise for sure to keep their momentum going plus it's very profitable so I can see 50% across the board there with a big enough 7nm euv chip. Consumers might not get it for awhile though.

But 50% faster AND 50% lower power consumption is...highly unlikely.

No, they aren't, I was waiting for the inevitable brute-force "NEXT GEN TI IS GOING TO OWN!" type of commentary, figured I'd get my negativity in early.........the hype train before new platform releases gets fatiguing. Hype Hype Hype, Fighting, Fighting, Hype Hype OH LOOK ITS OUT...........24%.
 
Right there where it says 5.9 peta flops and it’s now estimated to have 8.0 pets flops is where they’re getting this 75% number... as a 2080ti owner I’m gonna hold on to my card till the reviews come out. Worst case scenario I’ll sell this puppy for $500 and I’ll just have to shell out another 1k for the latest and greatest Ti. I really hope AMD squares their shit away and blow nvidia out the water with their next gen Navi just like how they shocked the market with the HD4000 series back in the day.

Its all rumors but assuming this and the AMD rumors are true:

Nvidia finally has competition. They can't just trickle things out to us, like the past.

It sounds like Nvidia's new stuff will release after AMD's new stuff. So, Nvidia may need to release all of that performance, to maintain the lead.

However, it puts AMD in a pretty good postion to release another new thing later in the year, to catch up again. As I keep saying, their roadmaps are aggressive right now. And they seem to be hitting their marks. Even if it doesn't turn out all roses----they are doing well enough to put on some pressure. Its a good time for hardware.

Maxwell and pascal did that jump.. maxwell was 30% to 50% (depending on the tittle) over Kepler, Pascal was from 50 to 70% faster than Maxwell.. so, it's nothing new that Nvidia can make huge jumps gen to gen..

70-75% at what ever task the new supercomputer does will be doing I doubt 75% faster as a whole. But given this is a replacement to the Tesla V100’s I am looking forward to it, supposedly the new VMWare won’t do vGPU’s with Quadro’s correctly so I may finally have to bite the bullet and get one and the V100’s are a smidge old at this stage.
 
Sandbagging can get you bit in the ass, unless of course your opponent is just totally outclassed.

In fairness their not in business to just do research. The fine line NV and AMD... and I guess Intel are playing is designing something fast enough to sell, but not so complicated and expensive to fab that they have to either price it out of the market or loose money. I have no doubt NV could produce a GPU that is 150% faster then a 2080 if they think people will pay 2 grand for video cards... or they are willing to sell them under cost. lol

That is the main reason I'm still not convinced NV is going to be providing much more then 20% this generation. I could be wrong... but they have a pretty nice lead right now in mind share even if AMD or Intel did release a monster it wouldn't mean instant massive NV losses in market share. That coupled with their last generation by all accounts being one of the most expensive to FAB GPUs ever made. All these rumors are just that... imo it makes 1000% more sense for NV to create a easy to fab chip that is a bit faster then their last generation. Where they can make great margin... or if AMD or Intel do bring the heat they can compete so hard on price both AMD and Intel will wonder how bad they really want to compete for the lead.
 
I don’t expect we will see any massive overall improvements until we see an uptake in MCM GPU architectures. Die shrinks will only get so much and die sizes can’t increase too much more than they are now and be any way practical to build or sell. Though I doubt we will see those until PCIE 5 I could see AMD pushing the envelope and doing it on PCIE 4, I doubt that the change at that stage would provide large benefits until software design catches up. At which stage we would see nVidia’s design show up. It seems to be AMD’s lot in life to show up early to the party to get upstaged by somebody showing up fashionably late.
 
I don't recall ever seeing 50 to 75% across the board....I remember the jumps were significant in some instances, but with a correlating big jump in price as well, thought it was max 35%......either way I believe you, but jumps like that are usually flag-planters, I expect a huge cost associated as well. However that is probably the kind of horsepower you need to drive a Valve Index type of situation, or get people into 4k multi-monitor setups.....
We'll see.
