How the F

I thought Wii was known for the plethora of super low quality games that got churned out. Anyone else picking their jaw up off the floor right now?

I think there are tons of garbage Indy games that are on the digital store can be attributed to that? The switch also seems to be a popular port dump also.

I mean we're talking almost 3k games already, seems proposterous. I think it would be more interesting to see how many games were released in retail packaging. This might give us a realistic number of games that are closer to a typical console game.

There are a lot of decent 3rd party Switch games. Seems to be the place for proper games to go that don't have the funds to make high end graphics, but are a step above mobile games in terms of gameplay. Nintendo has opened up a lot with regards to 3rd party games.

No way can they be all Hard Copies when the Wii was around basically it didn't have much for downloads you could download old NES games but that was about it.

It is because they allow indy titles to be ported to the digital store. Now this is good and bad. The good is that it means you get some real quality titles that were for the PC but will run fine on handheld hardware. This includes both new titles, and some titles that have been out on PC for a long time. Plus it helps with sales for those authors, since the Switch store is not the total hot garbage Steam is these days. However the bad thing is that while they DO have a level of QA that Steam does not, they still let a lot of crap through so ya, you get artificially high numbers due to shitty titles.

Don't you know, they've released for the switch hundred of emulated games you can buy? They are probably rigging the numbers by counting 'BREATH OF FIRE 3!!!!!' as a GAME released for the SWITCH.

As everyone has pointed out, this is entirely due to indie games and ports of older games.

If you looked at either the number of physical releases, or the number of new games (not ports), you'd see massively different numbers. Wouldn't surprise me to see Wii leading on those metrics.

Hey now BoF3 was a better game then most the games released on the switch. Including BotW.

Digital Store + ReMakes + Emulated titles.

Same general rules apply going back to the N64 days: First party stuff is fine, the rest is generally crapware with the odd diamond in the rough laying around.

It wasn't the number, it was the proportion of shovelware that came out compared to the whole of titles on the Wii. The number of good titles on the Wii was like 1 in 100.

Completely agree that it was amazing... in it's day. It being cartoon sprite driven actually stands up pretty well except for an outdated limited 256 colour pallet. It stands up way better than even slightly older games like Deus Ex that were textured polygon driven and whose polygon count is literately 1/1000th of a modern game and 1/100th the texture pixel count, making everything look blocky and blurry mess. However, given the choice, I prefer the rpg mechanics and gameplay variety and graphics of most modern games like Path of Exile, Witcher 3 and so on, over BoF3.

110% this. Exactly what I wanted to say when I saw OP's post. There is so much bullshit in the Switch eShop that it's starting to look like the fucking Android Play Store.

I think most casuals just played Wii Sports for the most part and never bought any other games.

Also, online store wasn't really a thing with the Wii. Now there are a ton of indie titles that are download-only.

I believe it. All the grand moms out there playing the Wii only played Wii sports and never brought anything else. Hell most of them probably didn't even buy it for themselves and probably didn't even know there was more games out there besides Wii sports.

The switch has a shitload of shitty games on the eShop. A large amount of the main titles are from old systems. It's basically a dumping ground for ancient ports.

I love my switch, it's awesome but the eShop is worse than the Android play store. Just a ton of really terrible cheap games flooding the store.

My son still plays wii sports, and when the disc gets inevitably scratched to shit, i have to hunt down a replacement online.

Not that I condone piracy, but if it's a game you own, I seem to recall the Wii being pretty easy to hack to be able to play backups.

I think that after the overnight success of the wii, and such a massive install base, that developers had already been schooled in the low quality, quick release formula that plagued the wii, giving the switch a massive dump of games for such a short amount of time.

Cant believe the witcher 3 is on the switch, playing that on my son's switch lite is hilarious.
A definitely graphically dumber down version, but still.
God I love technology.

1) All the wii U games just got a direct port with minimal added content and a $60 price tag. SO very little development time.
2) nearly every piece of indy crap (and some of the good stuff too) on the unity engine is in the switch store as downloadable content.
3) There are actually some switch games.

Add it all up and it's a ton of title.
