Epic Games Store

And Steam's was what for comparison? 4 billion?
I don't know, you should look it up.

What would it change though? 4 billion, or 3, or 5? What's the difference? What point are you trying to make?

Epic's share would still be small despite acquiring a bunch of high profile titles as exclusives.
It is entirely possible that they could've gained the same share or more with a good faith approach.

Steam's revenue generated in 2017 was $4.6b. It's probably over $5b by now.

Because Steam is what EGS is competing against so it's an actual meaningful comparison. Taking 10% of that market share in a year extremely significant. Steam has real competition now.

You can plug your ears and scream EGS sucks, but it doesn't change reality.

What reality is that? That you can't do basic math? How is 200 million 10% of market share? It's not even 5% of Steam, and the entire market consists, of GOG, Origin, Uplay, and retail.

Even if EGS were to upset the entire market and gain 90% share in their first year that still wouldn't mean we must like their utter contempt for gamers.

How are they competing if they're selling timed exclusives?

Because they're getting games people want, which is all what matters.

Was looking up games the other day, and found that the developers of RS2 Vietnam (Anti Matter Games) are now working on a standalone game called '83. Sounds like they're entirely separate from Tripwire Interactive now. Decided to see what TWI was up to. Looks like they're moving to EGS as well and releasing a shark game. Which is certainly interesting, I thought they would've held out. Red Orchestra was the third 3rd party game to be released on Steam and they were one of the first studios if not the first to sign up with Valve. The majority of the time I used Steam was spent between HL2/CS:S and Red Orchestra. Not that I am very interested in TWI's new product anyways. Will check it out when released, but more interested in '83 which could be a good RS2 Vietnam or Battlefield replacement.

the competition today is not for selling games, it is for getting games to sell. this is a good thing for developers because it opens another avenue of funding.
maybe not so much for consumers. everyone moans about epic, but people will really be crying if stadia gets big name exclusives because those WILL NOT be available except as streaming titles.

What all these companies fail to realize PC games can do something no console player can. If we can't get it where we want we can just dl a cracked copy. I'm really not sure why companies limit themselves. They way it should be is put it $5 cheaper on egs and literally be no one would be complaining and it bet egs market share would go up and ever game that's been a egs exclusive would have sold more if on steam

if you are going to steal shit then your views are absolutely unimportant in the matter. that is why so many games are console exclusives or a year delayed to PC.
developing games costs money, and if you are not going to pay anything then you are irrelevant.
Obviously there are a lot of abuses going on with big titles in the publisher/customer relationship but a lot of that gets heaped unfairly on small titles with no monetization BS who are just looking to survive.
As for cheaper... Metro was put on EGS $10 cheaper than steam and there was still endless moaning going on.

Crying about the morality of piracy will fall on a lot of deaf ears no matter what. Its not as if piracy doesnt affect the whole gaming industry, consoles included. Devs/Game makers can complain about revenue and funding but as the customer I'm not going to care much if I'm forced into their box to be controlled and manipulated.

Also, as far as I know, Metro is the only game sold cheaper on EGS than it was elsewhere.

When people pirate games they have no desire to play them in the first place. I downloaded the original theif if a warez site Even though I had the game I had no idea how to play it. I liked Quake Shareware though that was fun.

It's just like all those free epic games nobody is playing any of them at least I'm not I only have one installed.

Mentioning something worse doesn't make EGS any better. That's a classic non-argument.

If you're not going to buy the game the question is why aren't you buying it, and the answer is because of EGS. Whether someone then goes to pirate the game, or simply treat it as if it didn't exist like me is completely irrelevant.

Obviously cheaper without exclusivity, that is the whole point. Gain market position by better pricing, not by brute force strongarm tactics. And BTW it was only cheaper in the US, for me in EU it was actually more expensive.

Farming simulator is out later today could be a good game remember when it launched a few months back on Steam.
I grew up on a farm on the weekends the most fun was probably riding though the farm field with a 3-Wheeler ATV tiped it over a few times.

Is this the first free game they have given away that has multiplayer?

What matters in the end of the day is the profit margins. If more people pirate will extra revenues per sale be worth the loss in sales? That will be decided on a case by case basis. In general most pirates pirate because they can. While there are obviously some "principled pirates" they're a minority. And if it wasn't EGS, it will be for Denuvo, Steam, some form of DRM, or because they don't like the company, or something else.

What is this "most people pirate"? Are you talking about kids? Or people with no money? In my circle the coming of steam pretty much wiped out piracy. it made tons of games easily available to everyone and... the sales at the time made them affordable. There was no longer any need to burn tons of cds or dvds, to gamble with installing cracks or downloading access codes. All that crap went away and people were able to support developers/publishers that made the games they loved. Yeah, there is still lots of piracy going on. But I have to question the actual impact on the game market. People with no money... are not going to be buying games anyway. DVD collectors... so what.

I have a 10.00 coupon that was added in January so you can get 10.00 if you bought more than one titles during the winter sale thinking of picking up Coruption 2029 for 9.99 and tax. Or pick up Metro Exodus DLC which I could get for 14.99 after the coupon

I have problems with Saves being sync via cloud with the Outer Worlds every other game works ok. I wish they would update the client and add reviews and a message board.

CDPR just announced that they had finally had 5 mllion in sales through steam and would now qualify for the 20% rate.
Which, while cool, but if a mega game like that had to struggle for 5 million, then smaller developers are pretty much screwed

That only counts from october 2018, years after the game launched (not to mention they also sell on GOG as it is their own service)

When Witcher 3 launched it was a flat 30%. If I recall it was around late 2018, probably October 1, which would make sense. Pretty much in response to Epic's lower fees as well as other companies jumping off the platform. I think Epic announced their revenue split after, but I assume they were talking to various developers in the proceeding months and Valve got word of it.

About time. Can't seem to find it unless I add a new game to the Wish list, but it works nicely. Unlike Steam you can wish list all versions, DLC, expansion packs and whatnot. Unlike Steam, you cannot order to your own preference. You can do it by whether it is on sale, date added, name and some others but not customized.

Maybe they'll get a shopping cart function next month...

I had a problem with The Outer Worlds not syncing the cloud saves error CL- 401-0 or something so what I did was went in the save directory and deleted all the saves except for the Auto Saves now the game is good as new I don't think the game deletes saves for some reason even though they are deleted in game. I think I had too many saves to upload to the cloud the game works now I figured the Auto saves were close to the latest saves. First I downloaded the game again when that didn't work I did the above.

Discovering old installs is really the sucks I just did a reinstall of Win 10 because of lockups on shutdown.
The Epic laucher does verify files but you still have to copy and past the old files to be discovered. I have the stuff on a sata SSD but I wish I had a nvme drive for faster copy and paste speed.
I don't think they will improve upon it because it's probably way too much work to have something like Steam does but everyone knows Steam is outdated but it's still a better system.

Absolutely going to get JC4. Absolutely the worst "AAA" game I've every played, a literal alpha game in every aspect when I played it months post release. Really enjoyed JC3, but JC4 wasn't even close to done. I'm going to assume it is at best, a bad or below average game at best. But I'll get it for free. Probably won't come with the DLC though.

Two-Factor Authentication Required When Claiming Free Games April 28 - May 21
4.28.2020

Beginning today and ending on May 21, we will periodically require two-factor authentication prior to claiming free games on the Epic Games Store. We are making this change in an effort to encourage our players to take steps to strengthen their Epic account security.

If you do not have two-factor authentication enabled on your account, you will see the following message when attempting to claim a free game:

Two Factor Authentication Required

Claiming this free game requires you to have Two-Factor Authentication setup on your account. Two-Factor Authentication provides an additional level of security to your Epic Games account and will help prevent unauthorized access.”

In order to enable two-factor authentication, please head over to your Epic Games Account settings. Two-factor authentication can be used to help protect your account from unauthorized access by requiring you to enter a security code when you sign in. You can read a full how-to guide on enabling two-factor authentication here.

We understand that this is a minor inconvenience for some, but we want to provide the best possible solutions to protect your Epic account.

If you want you can use email instead of a text code I mean you should be logged in most of time anyway.

Well, the launcher didn't require that I use 2FA for this week's freebies. Probably the next time it does an update to the launcher maybe.
