VR Core Scaling (specifically 6 vs 8). Any data?

From the information I've been able to find there is a suggestion that VR does have some more scaling with core count relative to conventional gaming. Well at least in terms of benefiting more from having >4c/8t more so than conventional gaming.

What I'm unable to find is more direct comparisons, or more specifically 8 vs 6 core Zen/+/2 benchmarks. The only data I've been able to find is for VR Mark which shows signfiicant improvements but I'm pretty skeptical of how representative that actually is.

The problem is, as with a lot of things, reviewers seem to like to do AMD vs Intel comparisons which I guess plays to the audience.

Otherwise I'm only able to find theorized results based on conventional gaming data.

So I'm wondering if anyone else is aware of some data? More specifically what the difference would be between Zen 2 8/16 vs 6/12 for VR.
 
It depends on the game, but in the main I would say very little, VR is so GPU intensive. I am presuming you are looking for this information because you are deciding between an 8 core or a 6 core CPU? Well, depending on the price of course, I would get the 6 core and get a better GPU.
 
In my case they're basically separately considered components as I'm spending well under disposable income limits so it's really just a question of value.

Trying to do an analysis of a 3800x vs 3600x given various usage cases and factoring in ToC and upgrades.

Was leaning towards cheap plus future upgrade. But just recently I might be coming into possession of a Windows MR HMD and so may play around with a VR which wasn't something I had considered up until now.

In either case the GPU has been set as either a 970 or 1660ti (just didnt like the other options currently) with eyeing a resell and upgrade next gen. VR is making me now lean to stop gapping with the 1660 ti to as well as opposed to stretching the 970 further.
 
Yeah. Actually many VR games may even be relatively light on their CPU use, at the moment anyway. It is the GPU that gets hammered hard because it has to render everything twice from two different angles. It is not exactly double the performance hit anymore as was the case with old stereo 3D glasses games but it is still really hard.
 
Obviously, it depends on the game, but you'll almost always find that you're GPU bound, especially now where everything has SMT.

What does make a difference on some level is having faster cores. There is a part of the process of rendering each frame that is done by the CPU, so if you can reduce the time it spends, that leaves more time for the GPU to do its work.

With the GPUs you are deciding on, it makes no difference. Get the cheapest CPU.

Well there is a forward looking angle as the plan is to upgrade the GPU next gen which could even be out in 6 months. Typically I upgrade the GPU every generation, it was only the timing of the mining spike causing me to skip last generation.

Also regardless of my personal situation there is also an academic interest in this matter as well.
 
VR games for the most part are going to be GPU limited with almost any modern enthusiast CPU. We did some testing on this a couple years ago. I have not found any games recently that could fully load an 8 for CPU. However there are some out there that can load up a 6 core fairly well. If I was building today, I would go 8 core minimal. My personal gaming box now is a 6 core and I did that to see how it loaded across games.

You are way over thinking things. Get the best CPU you can afford within your budget. If you have something outside of gaming, an academic pursuit, that needs more cores than get the CPU with more cores.

It sounds like you already made your choice to get he CPU with higher cores. I am guessing you are trying to maybe justify going for a more expensive CPU and was hoping that there would be a big difference in VR gaming using a higher core CPU :D

You're right I do over think things.

But I'm actually trying to argue myself out of the 8 core (3800x). It's just I like to play devils advocate against myself so I'm trying to find as many pros for the 8 core as possible over the 3600x and just upgrading later (and relatively sooner) if needed/wanted (possibly Zen 3 8 core).

The 3800X isn't worth paying for over the 3700X.

Not in my situation, same with the 3600x vs the 3600. In my case in both situations the 3800x and 3600x were both essentially the same price as the 3700x/3600 but effectively cheaper due to the extra game bundle in each case. AMD was not as aggressive with 3700x/3600 discounts over 2019Q4.

3800x was about 74% more expensive than the 3600x.

How is that relevant now though? AMD did a deal on the 3800x for about a week just before Christmas, but that deal is over. I am guessing they did that deal because they weren't that selling that well. Why pay the extra money for an negligible performance increase over the 3700x. For one extra game code, codes that are constantly for sale for cheap.

My point still stands, unless you can go back in time, it's not worth buying the 3800x over the 3700x.

Well in my case I have both. They're just not opened or installed yet. I'm really deciding which to return.
 
If that's the case then just keep the 3800x as it's cheaper. It seems a pretty simple choice to me.

3600x was ~$175. 3800x was about $130 or 74% more expensive.

3600 would've been ~$185 at the cheapest. 3700x same as the 3800x at the cheapest so I didn't buy them.

ah, in the last few posts we were only talking about the 3800x and the 3700x, so when you said you had both I presumed you meant those. My Bad!!

well, then here is my advise.

If you are going to upgrade when the next gen CPUs come around then keep the 3600x.

If you are going to skip the next gen, get the 3800x.

If you are unsure, then pick the best CPU that it within your budget. :)
