Linus from Linus Tech to Possibly Retire

I'm gonna miss him. As of late, his financial security allowed him to speak up his mind in ways most other "reviewers" can't (the blurred Threadripper results in the Intel Cascade Lake review come to mind).

Ya I thought he just said he was thinking about it. I haven’t had a chance to watch the whole video yet.

Not going to watch him talk for 30 minutes, but sounds like he isn't retiring. Probably makes a decent amount doing what he does, and it seems like something fun to do. I know a lot of people here don't like him but his videos don't cater to those looking for in-depth reviews. I mean, it is called Linus Tech Tips for a reason. Small little tips and basic things is what he does I suppose. Don't really watch his videos myself but for the videos I have seen, that seems to be the theme.

He’s gone plenty into depth on certain topics.

gaming lag tests for example

Multihead multi graphic card vm/ESX gaming stations for another

I’d venture most people who say they can’t stand him are shallowly jealous of his success.

If you watch this video, where he levels with his audience to the point of tears of honesty, you can't help but like the guy. And it's real, meaty talk...

LTT, Gamers Nexus and Digital Foundry have been my Go-to for honesty and hard facts. LTT and GN specifically have burned bridges with their honesty, and I support the hell out of that.

Linus outright called Intel a chicken weasel, and described in detail why both insults apply. With the number of OEMs and CEOs he's on a first-name basis with, that takes balls.

You Tube isn't life

This is still my favorite video of him before he totally sold out to everyone.
I bought the case after this video actually still own one of them.

Watching Linus is a bit comical. I think its part of why he's successful but some of the stuff he does gets on my nerves, especially when he does it to high end hardware.

I truly envy this guy. What if he retires only to join Intel in a couple of years. Changing the beast from within, you know?

But I don't think he needs the money. Plus he already is dripping in bitches.

Yeah I've always found him pretty well rounded in terms of content. Sure every now and then he makes some videos that target a more casual crowd but also does plenty of in depth videos.

And he's been genuinely critical of companies in the past which is refreshing, he's not like a lot of other YouTubers that just read off a PR sheet when covering products.

He sounds very burned out, hopefully stepping back a bit rather than chasing subscribers will help him.

I'd be glad if he stepped back entirely and let his employees do their jobs. Videos featuring him have been cringey and/or clickbait for years, any video that would have otherwise been interesting to watch with one of his employees presenting it gets ruined by him just for being present. He's always taking pot shots at his employees with the verbal abuse, behaves inappropriately and the thing he's best known for, breaking quite literally everything. A few examples are videos with Anthony trying to present interesting topics, which are ruined by Linus faffing about and numerous jump cuts for more childish Linus behavior.

Dude accomplished a lot already in his 30s.

Yes, he had the ambition to turn a tiny generic tech review channel into a conglomerate, but he's falling into the trap that many before him have where they never seem to understand where they should be in their organization. Linus wants to be "on the ground floor" with everyone else, which creates conflict of interest and compromises the integrity of the company. He needs to do more businessman and less idiotic interference in everything, it'd make him a lot less stressed and make a better quality viewer experience. And I'm not saying he needs to entirely disappear, but he really needs to stop micromanaging everything.

wrong

linus tech tips is successful because of Linus.

there are a million tech guru wannabes out there making youtube channels, tech blogs, websites, all trying to capture the limelight. If Linus ducks out of Linus Tech Tips, his channel will not be as successful. — and maybe thats okay.

But you make it sound like the channel has succeeded in spite of Linus. Thats nonsense.

He doesn't need to retire, he has staff that can take his place making the videos and I think he's trained them to do what needs to be done well enough. He can start managing his company as an executive instead of making videos constantly. Though I'm not a fan of his, he's done a really good job carving a niche for himself and becoming successful enough to make a company out of it--a lot of people have failed trying that including even [H].

He's fun enough to watch sometimes, I like when he does random "scrapyard" builds, I think one of the first of his videos that got me hooked he was in China and just bought random shit at some tech district (like Alibaba level of low end shit too) just to build a system. Most of his reviewing stuff is not for me though, he gets a free 65" ROG gaming monitor (or whatever the size was) that cost like $4000 just for review purposes, the some time later hey here's an LG C9 that does the same thing for a bit cheaper, or 10980XE build... like seriously which segment of the population is this built towards? Certainly not me, but that's fine.

Overall he's achieved the goal of having a hobby that you can make a living off of, he built up an "empire" to the point where he gets more free gear from vendors in a week than most people will buy in a lifetime of computing, plus he's got so many followers/subscribers/views that his sponsors probably pay a ton for him. If I could get there with a hobby of mine I'd be happy too, unfortunately I think the market tends to get a little flooded and unless you do something seriously unique and/or well you're just going to be noise. For instance I'm into saltwater aquariums, and the number of people making videos about it make me sick sometimes, not because there's a lot it's just they're annoying or dumb AF when it comes to the hobby.

Linus caused a bitter reaction for me regarding how he acquired that Intel Larrabee that Red Falcon won legitimately. Lost a lot of respect with how LMG ignored what was being suggested and didn't own him to anything about breaking eBay policies to acquire it

I read that whole thread just now and I don't see enough evidence that conclusively shows Linus got the exact card Red Falcon won, although the coincidence is quite high. Nothing conclusive, though... did it get admitted somewhere?

That's exactly what I'm saying. Linus needs to step back and be a businessman and stop micromanaging everything.

He's alienated a good portion of his viewership doing dumb stuff like this. People have begged him for years to make videos on sensible system builds, and when he finally relents, he comes back and slaps his viewership with a wet used condom to the face of a shitty video where they take used broken OEM parts from the bottom of the barrel and slaps them together into a failed build and calls it a day. Now he's all into the knockoff Chinese motherboards made with used chipsets, and pushing them like they're going out of style.

compare the cards side by side, it's the same card from eBay and the price lined up and the timing too

we haven't seen a larrabee since, so it was super obvious

I don’t think he micromanages as much as you think he does. He gets involved in projects, but he doesn’t write scripts. He has zero involvement with the advertising and marketing side of things, and I rather doubt he touches most of the IT stuff since that seems like Anthony’s domain.

Thing is 1000000 other people do reviews of low and mid range stuff. Only reason I look at his videos is the odd/ crazy stuff I would never watch any YouTube review I read a page about the gear. But the showmanship/comedy that deals with tech someway is his nich

#131

side by side comparison in post #131, same card

I was attracted to his channel when I watched the "whole room watercooling" project.
It is these projects they do that I enjoy most about his channel, and it's also what sets them apart from other youtube channels on PC stuff.
Their product reviews are fine, but nothing that makes them stand out IMO.

I think his channel will do just fine if he decides to stop making videos of latest products and just focus on doing crazy projects, they will still get the views and sponsorship to keep them going.
He seem to have build a talented team capable of coming up with all these interesting projects and research, would be a loss if they stop now.

Honestly I use to like Linux but recently I become bored of his videos. Seems like he is running out of ideas and going through the motions.

That was extremely unfortunate, and the original seller did say that, while I did officially win and pay him for the auction and the item, he immediately cancelled the order and returned my money and stated that he was weary of selling it outside of Canada, and thus ended up sending it to Linus.
I did laugh when Linus said that he had obtained it for cheap (it was a lot more than he stated), it did make me lose a bit of respect for him for at least not recognizing that nor reaching out for comment (he is not about the fans, that's for sure); oh well, he owes me nothing and such is life.

Better luck next time to both of us, erek, and if another one shows up, I hope you are able to obtain it! (y)

I’d venture most people who say they can’t stand him are shallowly jealous of his success.

I find his videos irritating, and that isn't jealousy. It's a question of presentation style aimed at a much younger demo than me.

I like/subscribe to a few successful YT channels. If I was going to be jealous, I'd be jealous of the the successful channels I actually like and watch, not the ones I find too irritating to watch.

Considering how many ads he threw in our face, no wonder it's time to retire.
Never followed him because of his tendency to throw ads pretty much everywhere in his video.

Good, it will open up a spot for others.

If you can do it better do it, whether Linus quits is irrelevant to that. There is no rule that says there can't be +1 tech youtubers.

It's a necessary evil in order to make money.

It's great that Linus has done so well. I remember watching his Logitech G13 video and thinking this kid is just hanging out in his living room making youtube unboxing videos, hell I could do that. And yeah, look at him now.
