RAID 0 x8 older SSD... worth it?

I have a handful of Sandisk x300 128 SSD's from ewaste pulls.

I was thinking of buying a used older raid card with cache and throwing 8 of them in raid 0 to play with.

Would the assumed possible performance of something like this be even worth it vs a modern drive on an M.2 or even sata III bus?

Thanks :)

I would assume performance would be pretty decent, and depending on hold old your 'older RAID card' is you will probably approach 2 or 3 GB/s sequential transfer speeds. That said, a single modern PCIE 4.0 NVME drive will likely spank the transfer speeds and will absolutely trounce the latency numbers, all without the ugliness of 8 points of failure on an array :)

It sounds fun though, so if you already own the stuff feel free to go for it. Hell I think I have an couple IBM M5015 cards hanging around if you want one.

I can't imagine using something like that for anything more than a cheap scratch disk for A/V work, nor putting much money into it. Maybe if you can find a cheap SATA3/SAS2 card (e.g., something based on the LSI 2008).

Generally, +1 to what sinisterDei said.

Yup you both sound about exactly right, kinda why I was both curious and at the same time "eh?"

I have some spare hardware lying around in the garage but not raid cards. sinisterDei - do you have sff cables for those cards? If so PM me what you would want for a card + the cables. I think I might just do it just to see the numbers.

Thanks [H] :)
