HTC Vive Pro Headset Permanently Reduced to $600

Both are too pricey for a niche genre. If Index full kit was $350 it would help VR get much faster traction.

There are already kits for around that price range, but the Vive Pro and Index are top end premium products. You're asking for a Supra for the price of a used Camry.

Yeah those are all crap. That's why these should be 1/3rd the price they are.

Odyssey+ at $250-$300 has better visuals than the vive pro for half the price, I've tried both back to back in the same game. The controller tracking is better on the vive, but not $600 better given the vive with base stations and wands is $900. HTC is likely done with vr at this point.

HTC still makes HMDs? Who knew?

Oh god, it still ships with the wands? Yuck. Save a bit and get the surprisingly competitive Rift S or be a baller and get a full Index setup.

Sorry, but no LCD displays for me. I am too hooked for the OLED blacks to even consider it. At least for now.

Pimax already offers a set with HMD, base stations and Valve Index controllers. HTC should do the same, ditch the god damn wands and offer the Pro kit with Index.

That's what I thought too, then I actually used a Rift S. The biggest difference isn't the blacks, but the reduced SDE by getting away from the OLED pentile subpixel layout. Even though it's "lower resolution" it does not feel like it.

I do still prefer my Quest though, but mainly for other reasons. Use it anywhere, any time, completely free of wires - unless you want a wire, it does that too...

Thats true. Although the downsides are that it is not available in europe, and it is still a WMR set with WMR controllers. And that 250-300 is only an offer that comes and goes. Last I checked it is about 400 again?

Yeah I just wish Oculus would unlock the refresh rate to 90hz on Quest with the Link cable. The panel is capable of it, hell it is the same thing as on Vive Pro and Odyssey+, so what is the hold up? When that happens, I will probably buy one for my upcoming portable VR set.

You do not think the blacks are washed out on games like Elite Dangerous?

Yeah, it bounces around a bit, but if you wait a week or two you can find it at $300 or under. It's $348 on amazon right now. Even at that price it's a way better deal than the Vive pro, or just about any other headset. The WMR controllers (or more accurately, tracking range) are the only real downside. They work fine when in view, but if they go out of your FOV they don't map 1:1 anymore - though tbh there are not many times you need accurate tracking when they're not in your sight. It's just immersion breaking more than any kind of game play issue.

Oculus can't just unlock the refresh rate of the Quest. First they would have to get low level access to the processor from Qualcomm, then they would have to jump through a bunch of hoops for FCC certification.

As for the OLED vs LCD debate in VR headsets, well it's all down to what you prefer the most. At the moment it's a trade off. For myself, I would rather the clarity of the LCD screen with little or no SDE than the black levels of the OLED screens.

Lastly, the Samsung Odyssey +. I had one for a while and compared it to the Rift Civ1. I kept the Civ 1 and returned the Odyssey +. Uncomfortable, tiny sweet spot, only average tracking and a poor ecosystem. There is more to VR than the quality of the picture. If you mainly like to watch movies, youtube etc with a small bit of mainly static gaming, then the Odyssey + would be perfect for the $250-$300 price. But, I struggle to see how anyone could use it long term as gaming headset.

For those who have experienced both, is the vive pro a substantial upgrade to the regular vive? and how does it perform with the wireless adapter? My vive wirelees is flawless, and I won't buy another HMD without wireless. Still waiting for freaking valve to make more Knuckles available.

Oh - does vive pro require 2.0 lighthouses?

I cannot answer the first question, but regarding the second I am quite sure the lighthouses are backwards and forwards compatible. 2.0 houses simply offer better tracking on bigger areas IIRC.

The Vive Pro is a big upgrade over the regular Vive. And it should work flawlessly with the Wireless adapter. But, YMMV. It won't require new lighthouses. If you are feeling brave you can try the GearVR lens mod.

All I can say is you must have been doing something wrong with the odyssey+. I had a cv1 and never used it again after getting the odyssey+. Tracking issues were likely due to low light and removing the face foam fixed any comfort issues I had.

SteamVR is a poor ecosystem?

I had no tracking issues with the Odyssey+, the tracking just isn't as good as the Quest, never mind the Original Rift with 3 sensors. And no I wasn't doing anything wrong.

No matter what I did the Odyssey + wasn't as comfortable as the Rift Civ1.

Steam integration was crap when I tried it.

I stand by what I said, at this point in time, if you can get one for a sale price it might be worth it. I wouldn't pay $499 for one.

LCD is so terrible for VR compared to OLED. I fixed one of the main drawbacks of the Vive Pro (SDE) and put in Odyssey+ panels in my Vive Pro. The Odyssey+ has the same OLEDs in the stock Vive Pro, just with a really nice anti-SDE layer on top.

The prices do feel over inflated, but I suppose it's because the market is relatively new. That being said, it seems like we already have better technology and I find it lackluster and frustrating that these companies are using things like fresnel lenses. Everyone just wants the uniformity and clarity of lcd monitors, but atm vr feels more like an alpha or beta product.

Its all fixable too. This is demonstrated by one company having one flaw in their headset, but another not having that same flaw.

Hopefully as has been demonstrated with TV's, the price will be dropped significantly in the near future. I expect a price range more like this:

Oculus Quest: $250
Index (full package): $600
PImax 8k x(full package): $800

Really for the VR sector to flourish, it needs lower prices, but also needs to remove its major flaws. (fov, godrays, resolution, small clarity lense area, and comfort)

The flaws in the VR products feel more akin to a blotch of dead pixels on a lcd display. I expect improvements in a product to be a simple increasing of specs for the most part... Like an IPS panel. IPS Panels start with a very clean and uniform construction and performance. They simply add more hz, more response time, and better colors/blacks, without having major flaws. THATS WHAT I WANT FROM THE VR MARKET. PEOPLE ARE STARVING FOR IT.

$229, does that qualify? It's a no brainer at that price.
