Heard they be crappy.

Doesn't matter because Nvidia is WAY too expensive (2070 super is 100-150 euros more expensive than the 5700 XT, screw that), but, i'm hearing a lot of horror stories all the same. How bad are they really? And how long does it take AMD to fix issues? And they do fix them, right, or am i dooming myself with a possibly unstable set up for the rest of time?

Some people have problems, some don't.

Really you should just get a 5700XT and see if it works for you, make sure you have a decent return window in case it doesn't.

Lots of opinions on this, from "I never had a problem!" to "AMD driver are the worst!". in the end if it works for you that's the only thing that matters.

Compared to the days of my ole 5850/6950, I think their drivers are in a FAR better state.

I'd give it a whirl.. Plus, Freesync is basically a freebie with most monitors now.

Well, i heard people complaining about driver problems fore the 5700 XT specifically. I could live with it as long as it is guaranteed that they'll get fixed down the line. The price difference with Nvidia is massive in my country (and prices for GPUs just went up too. 2070 super at 600 euros just, no), but it might be worth it to guarantee me some peace of mind, not sure.

AMD drivers are fine. Nvidia drivers have their own set of issues. No drivers are perfect, but graphics drivers are generally pretty good these days. You might do some quick searches to see if there are any known issues with the games you intend to play, just to be sure.

Or tell us more about the context in which you "Heard they be crappy" and maybe some on here could tell you if those issues are being exaggerated, are legit, or perhaps have already been solved.

I think anything pre 19.12 should be good. I'm having intermittent lockup issues with 19.12.3 after sleep, that didn't have or noticed when running 19.11.x driver. If you do get a 5700, some stuff I needed to do when I got 5700xt. Use DDU to remove any old Nvida/AMD gpu stuff if not doing fresh windows install. Force PCI-E in bios to gen 3 (for slot 5700 will be in) if motherboard don't support gen 4. Uninstall or don't use MSI afterburner type software as it was cause of most of my black screens, breaking freesync when I first got 5700xt. AMD drivers has most of the Afterburner functionality now so haven't really missed it. I run a basic setup in drivers (no Enhanced Sync, Radeon Sharpening. I only enable Freesync after installing then enable features after seeing everything is working in a few games. Nvidia or AMD the higher end cards tend to tax CPU/Memory more so run a CPU/Memory test (I use realbench stress test for an hour or more).

Well, let's assume the card is still buggy even as we speak. From experience, how reliable AMD drivers get over time for a specific card? Because i'm getting conflicted opinions about whether those issues are just because the 5700 is new (I.E., they'll be fixed eventually), or whether it's an ongoing thing with AMD.

The only point of comparison is a 480 which i briefly owned for a time, and i noticed Doom would often crash on that one. At the time i thought it was something i had done on windows (i was due for a fresh install), but in retrospective i wonder whether it was the AMD drivers.

You’re going to have to be a little more specific about where you’re “getting information” from and what kind of “buggy” things you’re “hearing”?

I’ve been running a 5700xt in win10 for a while now and haven’t had any issues with black screens or hangs. Reference board, drivers from a couple weeks ago when they introduced the new control panel and such. Haven’t needed to use DDU or anything like that, but also wasn’t messing with apps like afterburner that tend to break stuff (and then people blame “the drivers” anyways).

Linux side is a different story but drivers there are very fresh and the way Linux drivers roll out it will probably be the springtime distribution refreshes before that’s all sorted out.

Currently running a 5700 XT and so far my experience with it has been hell.

Half of the time it works perfectly, the other half of the time it will crash and cause my PC to hang and reboot.

Not sure if the card itself is faulty or the drivers are bad, but I've had enough of it if I can't use what I paid for.

Most of the time its the issue with other parts of their system.
Rather than drivers themselves.

The drivers are as good as for any other GPU on the market (some may argue they are better than nv).
In terms of what is actually not working at this moment, is the compute part on AI, and Boinc. They just don't work yet.

In release notes of drivers we see that amd is actively messing around the drivers of 5700 series. Its question of time before they are all tapped out, as each release note contain a lot of fixes. Its expected since its new architecture. (cudo's for them actually adding new stuff, and extensions at the same time)

Well, i ordered a Red Devil. We'll see i guess. 2070 super here in my country goes for 100-150 euros more, simply too much.

Sounds like something else is wrong with your system. My computer was doing the same thing. I thought it was my graphics card, but it turned out to be the PSU.

Tried it with another PSU, same result. Also tried it on a friend's PC, same result as well which I'm lead to believe my 5700 XT is faulty. My previous AMD cards never had this issue.

I know you said you tried it in another PC. But is the ram in those systems overclocked? I had hella issues with my 5700xt until I had stable ram OC.

I disabled XMP Profile on my system and the crash/freezing was still persisting and both systems were running at stock speeds, I never even bothered overclocking anything on my PC to make sure everything was running fine while trying to diagnose my video card.

Right now I've already sent back my 5700 XT to the store where I purchased it and they will handle the issue.

anyone played wolfenstein 2 (2017) lately with a 5700xt? The amount of fps they have squeezed out of this game between the engine, machine game studio optimization for amd hardware features/instructions, and amd side drivers, it's remarkable how freakin' high your fps is when a game is done right for amd. The sad, but funny irony in this, is that almost every single game gets this treatment on Nvidia hardware, so they essentially always have a pure pipeline to optimal performance on their hardware. If AMD could continue to leverage the console developers for their hardware, and actually reserve enough money from their cpu success for the driver/developer/outreach side of GPU, they could potentially start to challenge Nvidia on the high end again.

Alas, we haven't seen AMD give their GPU division the resources to mount such a valiant chance in ages, but if their cpu side keeps churning out greenbacks, they will get there, eventually, and we only have Intel to thank for it's stagnation on 14nm++++++++++++++++++

Their drivers are great. Arguably better UI. And have really woken up Nvidia to start adding new features.

I've owned a lot of cards from both companies over the years. I've had more driver issues on the AMD side than the NVIDIA side, some issues never got resolved even after working directly with AMD on the problems. That's for someone who reviews hardware for a living. People who aren't in that business would have no chance in those cases. That said, all of the problems I've ever had are outliers and not indicative of what you can normally expect from the companies offerings. The only thing that I experienced in recent years that was common still dates back to the Radeon HD 7970. On some games those would get ridiculously hot for no apparent reason and the only fix was to run the fan near 100% speed. This was unbearable to be around. That said, it was still somewhat of an outlier as the games this impacted were few and far between. There was no rhyme or reason behind it either as it wouldn't do it on all configurations.

That said, I've had a few AMD configurations over the years which were basically bulletproof. The Radeon HD 5970 was absolutely solid. The 7970 in my machine was perfect outside of running in Crossfire, which flat out wouldn't work in Eyefinity past 1920x1080 x3. I had some Radeon X1950XT's in Crossfire that were flawless and some 1950Pro's in another machine that were just the same.

AMD has made great strides in the last few years and really shouldn't be thought of in the same vein they used to be. I wouldn't worry about it too much. I'd buy the card your interested in and enjoy it. Of course, I'd spring for the 2070 Super because its faster, but that's me.

I don't know, looking at all the benchmarks i don't see it.

Now sure, if you want to factor in drivers, stuff like ray tracing etc, ok, maybe, but let's assume both cards were exactly the same in that respect, i don't see how the 5700 XT isn't a winning proposition for the money you spend for it, at least in countries where the gab is as large as it is in mine. If the argument is that it's worth it because you need the performance sure, but then it could also be worth it to spend 200 euros extra to get a 2080, and three times that to get a 2080ti.

Personally, there's something satisfying about getting more value for your money, which is why i decided to "gamble" on AMD after having owned Nvidia for many years. If it doesn't work out i guess i'll be forced to get a 2070 super but it just stinks that it has to cost so much more, even though it shouldn't. This regional pricing garbage is starting to get really obnoxious.

I only update drivers when a game comes out that needs something specific. As long as your drivers are stable, DONT TOUCH THEM! It's much more of a pita to do several restarts and uninstalls, reinstalls when there's nothing to be gained from it. Most updates only add in a profile for new game releases and unless you have that title, move along.

Well, that's debatable.

Unless you love RTX and DLSS, there's no debate. However, given the current state of their driver stability on certain setups. (Such as my multimonitor setup with different refresh rates. Nvidia is the only stable option.

Well, got my Red Devil.

So far, so good. Tried Doom, Witcher 3 and Kingdom Come and everything works for now. There seemed to be a bit of micro stuttering in Doom but hard to say whether that's the drivers or not. Could be just windows doing some weird crap the game is on my mechanical drive i have to move on my ssd and test it again.

Had it only for a day so we'll see how it goes. Only issue so far is that the card isn't powerful enough for Kingdom Come at 1440p Ultra. Game frequently goes under 60 FPS this game's requirements are just ludicrous. Feels kinda weird of having to play around with a game's setting right after buying a brand new 450 euros card, makes me wonder whether i should have stayed on 1080p.

In case you didn't know. They released a driver today. Massive fixes it appears in the release notes.

I thought there where no problems?

Updated to those drivers, and now my PC froze two times when watching movies using VLC at full screen. It's working now though, so who knows.

Another weird thing is that when i use the super resolution thing the game decides to tab to desktop constantly, not sure what's up with that.

Also, i moved my games on my SSD and the stuttering has remained, but it's very sporadic, not sure if the driver has anything to do with it or it's just the game that is doing something weird. Maybe they always did that and i'm just noticing it because i now have a card powerful enough to run them perfectly smoothly so even a minor stutter is suddenly noticeable.

how many cores, and what games?

I have a Ryzen 2600, games are Doom, Witcher 3 and Kingdom Come.

The stuttering is gone now but the computer crashed again while using VLC. I had to use driver cleaner from guru3d to make it work. Seems fine now, still using latest drivers, didn't roll back or anything.

So right now the main issue is some sporadic stuttering that comes and goes and VLC crashed at fill screen which seems to be fixed for now. Only three AAA games tested plus a bunch of older ones. Downloading more from steam as we speak.

On some games those would get ridiculously hot for no apparent reason and the only fix was to run the fan near 100% speed. This was unbearable to be around.

Huh, is Overwatch one of those? That game seems to drive my rx 480 and now 570 to max fan speeds in a heartbeat. GTA5 and even RedDead2 are quieter.

Also, I've learned my lesson and I'm staying away from the 2020 drivers for a few months if possible. I've never had anything too drastic with AMD drivers in the past 5+ years but I'm reading of too many problems with drivers and Navi to take the risk. The early Dec. drivers didn't properly finish their install but worked after a reboot. First time with that in years.

5700xt. Nov driver was stable in windows but black screen hard locked in games once or twice daily with no oc. 20.1 deiver black screens loadong mozilla, watching vlc, and in games. Less stable than ever. Will update to todays 20.1.2 and post back. Its getting so frustrating i might sell this one for another 2080ti and say f it. I tried to go back to amd for my backup gaming rig bit this is the least stability ive seen since the 5870 launch disaster. At least that one was mostly hardware related.

New driver says windiws idle crash is fixed.

I leave pc on at night for...reasons...and every morning i wake up to it hard crashed.

I use this specific rig 10+ hours a day for work. Since october id say it has crashed 300+ times.

The 2080ti rig hasnt crashed since september...and i overclock the particlez out of it.

Say what u will u get what u pay for.

With problems like that, I'd be wondering if it isn't a hardware issue needing an RMA. I mean that maybe you have a bad card.

And regarding "you get what you pay for" well.....let us not forget the RTX Space Invaders artifacting.
