Xbox Series X ‘Windows Mode’
Italian gaming site Game Experience reports murmurs among those linked to the project that the Xbox Series X will feature a boot mode dubbed Windows Mode

As the name suggests, players will be able to boot up the console to run Windows 10 applications. The mode will effectively transform the console into a PC. More specifically, the rumors suggest the console will be able to run games via both the Steam and Epic Games Store digital storefronts.

While Microsoft opening the Xbox Series X to competitor storefronts is somewhat of a stretch, a Windows Mode might not be as outlandish as it sounds.

How Xbox Game Pass Factors In

Xbox is heavily banking on the continued success of the Xbox Game Pass, which features an array of PC-only titles.

The ability to plays these on the Xbox Series X would expand the appeal of the console to PC gamers considerably.

Rather than having to spend upwards of $1,000 for a decent gaming rig, players could invest in the Series X and experience the best of both worlds.

This sounds like one of those cool features that will "come later after launch" and then gets canned.

I can't think of any major Game Pass title that isn't already on the XboxOne console. And I don't think MS would let Steam nor Epic or Origin stores on the XboxX as there's no money to be made there.

Now the opposite would be quite interesting... Didn't MS already had a project to run xboxone games on windows 10?

Apparently there is a rumor that Horizon Zero Dawn is coming to PC

If that is the case, then Windows Mode would be a nice way of playing that game on Xbox !!

I think this is a fantastic idea. If someone has very little use for a dedicated PC but sometimes needs access to a program or two (Microsoft Store approved, of course) this could work.

I don't buy it. Wild rumor from some random unknown website parroted by a site that posts such deep and insightful articles as "Elon Musk Likes Shouting 'Bitcoin' During Sex'? Smells like bullshit to me.

That rumor was bunk. What really happened is that Horizon was added to PS Now, which works on the PC.

If the Series X ended up being a quasi-PC (allowing certain digital store fronts, PC play, etc), it'd be the console I'd buy. Easy to setup PC gaming for on the road? Sign me up!

Paying for store/multiplayer/chat service has all seemed alien to me. You are paying to get access to more paid stuff. Makes no sense

Huh? You're not paying to use the store or chat. Paying for multiplayer kind of sucks, but that boat sailed 17 years ago.
