Astrophysicist Says He Knows How to Build a Time Machine

Suuuuuuuuuuuuure he does.

“He's created a prototype illustrating how lasers could be used to create a circulating beam of light that twists space and time -- inspired by his first job experimenting with lasers' effect on airplane jet engines.”

I could believe it. However, the article states:
"You can send information back, but you can only send it back to the point at which you turn the machine on," says Mallett.

Which eliminates all the really fun aspects of time travel, since you need the machine on both ends. Though this still would open up some nice stock trading tips.

Personally, I think that technically speaking, bending and twisting of space/time can be achieved. Such that we are technically visiting space/time which already happened (energy which was already generated/moved). But, even though you may appear to 'leave" somewhere....I don't think its going to be like a movie where its basically a separate dimension where you can visit and interact with what's going on/what already happened.

Instead, you'll just technically be surrounded in old non-descript energy which won't look anything at all like a past event you can view or interact with. And whether we move "forward" or "backward" through time, it will certainly mess with your 'relative' continuity with your associates. In other words, you'll probably seem older after you are finished. Even though they feel like you've only been gone a short time. Or it could be the other way around. You felt like your trip was relatively short, but you may have been gone from your associates for a long time. Which way it happens probably depends upon a number of factors. The movie Contact has a really simple, yet profound example of one way this sort of thing could look.

Basically, I think we can only relatively move forward from our starting points in space/time. Even though we may be able to bend back into some old energy, we're still essentially creating new events and not changing anything from the past, which would then affect the present.

Sounds like a decent way to bring Quick Saves to the real world.

Seymour got hit by a bus on the way to work, no problem! Just upload to an earlier save.

Some back tracking involved, mind you.

Come on guys, Nintendo figured this out a while ago with their rewind feature. You didn't realize the Switch was bending lasers around space time to bring Mario back to life.

I found the guy!!

You build it now, and future you can come back to now since there is machine here and there.

This guy must be the laughing stock of the physics community. Bending space time and/or exceeding the speed of light is not happening on a desktop laser oscillator.

I like how you guys ignore the guy calling bullshit,
""Time travel into the past is allowed, potentially, in our theory of general relativity, how we understand gravity," says Paul Sutter, an astrophysicist who hosts a podcast called "Ask a Spaceman!"
"But every time we try to concoct a theoretical time travel device, some other bit of physics busts in and breaks up the party."
Sutter says he is aware of Mallett's work, and thinks it's interesting, if not necessarily on track to deliver results.
"I don't think it's necessarily going to be fruitful, because I do think that there are deep flaws in his mathematics and his theory, and so a practical device seems unattainable.""

It took two black holes colliding for us to even detect fluctuations in space time. This article is click bait.

Everyone laughs at the crazy inventor right up to the point someone says "Gee, that's weird!" and a few years later the inventor is a billionaire. Not holding much chance he actually creates a time machine but he might make something useful.

I believe it. I mean, this guy probably won't complete it in his life-time, but on the journey (as you say) he might discover something else substantial.

The main problem, even assuming backwards time travel was possible, we don't know what would happen. Could you effect your future by changing the past, would parallel universes split, or would it be that you had always went back, and can't change the future at all. No one knows.

SeymourGore runs2far and everyone else, just don't foget about this... "if time traveling were possible, you'd have to adjust for where the Earth will be (since it moves thru space)....you could end up at a time where the Earth is not where you need it to be."

The Earth, Sun and The Milky Way and how could you possibly know where they once were. But remember, no matter where you go, there you are...

whats the movie where some guy figured out to put a time machine into a time machine then he could go anywhere....

but on a more practical level, the simple act of transporting information a few milliseconds back would allow him to corner the stock market
this is already being done with computerized trading where super high speed fiber gets installed just for the purpose of doing trades slightly faster

Have you ever seen the movie Primer?

Dr. Who did something like that back in the Tom Baker incarnation. The master materialized his time ship within the Tardis and they wound up outside of time space.

I built and patented a time machine years ago. It only goes forward at what seems like a slower pace than normal but is in fact a normal pace.

I can vouch for it. Was an early beta tester. But, I didn't have the patience for the future to catch up, left the project and returned to my previous boring timeline.

I'm getting Half Life flashbacks now.

But how much would "he" actually benefit from this? If you receive information from the future and act upon it thus changing that future, you've now created a new timeline where there is no version of you ahead of yourself. I guess if you go all in on some 10x+ calls/puts, one trade is all you need...

I would never believe anyone that says they know how to build a time machine unless there was a "I built a time machine and I'm from the future." headline from them long before the headline that says they said they know how to build one. :p

The thing is...if he could even pull off a 100 ms, that would be enough to be the richest person in the world in the span of a few days via the stock markets.

Didn't we just go over the entire thing about posting trash on the [H] a couple days ago? In that thread about the AMD 5950 XT... Now, drumroll [H]'ers Erek presents: Time Travel!!!

I love this site, however, it just damages my calm when I keep seeing ... stuff like this popping up on here...
Try having some fun with it.

Try having some fun with it.
I will, once I overcome the homicidal rage that tends to hit me in waves as I witness the [H] turning into the "Enquirer". If things are heading this way, might as well add something like porn hub integration so we can get some more traffic. :angelic:

"A man (person) that never breaks his word, exists outside of time." - Chris

Also, if I invented a time machine, I wouldn't tell anyone.
This.
If time travel ever does exist, 100% chance the government would apply eminent domain to it and use it to screw us further.
Though, potential for Jean Claude Van Damme to save the day.....
