Been working day job and then nights on server upgrades for the past 56 hours. Been hitting cold snacks for the past 2 hours. Hands up any1 else with severe work stress :D
 
Today's the last day for two weeks for me. Two PC's to drop back to clients and I kick back and have a beer.

Last weekend was the model example of how Murphy's law works. Everything that could go wrong, pretty much did. A simple migration from machine to another hit snags after snags causing the need for hours of troubleshooting and a couple hours of unplanned network outage while the service provider was scrambling for experts to fix it on weekend. Luckily that image doesn't have users during the weekend, mostly only work hours. And just when I thought I was in the clear and cracked up a couple of beers, a collegue informed me that routing from one of our subnets still didn't work lol.

Well, now it's finally fixed. Now we started a migration to Google/AWS hosted datacenters. We leave own hardware only for the stingiest customers who can't take the 10x cost of Google/AWS. I can run a Kubernetes cluster of 4 vcpus/instance and 10 gigs of ram for the price of 1vcpu/2gigs Google vcloud. But at the cost of working nights and weekends.
 
My most sleepless job was "work from home". I had to learn to take "cat naps" even while sitting up on the job. It was bad, real bad. I had to leave the job simply because it was (really) killing me.

I don't have it quite that bad. Most days I stop working at 4-5pm and just go to other activities at home or go out of the house. I used to spend hours on the road every day, now it's getting tiring and I prefer to do remote meetings and maintenance instead.
 
I have had that stress. I wouldn't willingly walk back into that mire. I found a place that respects the job/life balance. At times I will put in the extra, but it's short lived.

I had a job, salary wage and they paid well, but it seemed to entitle them to 24/7 access. I'd start at 5, work to 7, then back to work at midnight till 6, and hope they didn't catch me in the office. Seven days a week. I didn't need them to burn me out faster than necessary. If I had been single, I'd have bought a fleshlight and saved my money, but I had family. They will always be more important.

If it's every once in awhile, suck it up. If it's all the time, flee

When you're a 25% shareholder and member of board, you can't flee that easy :whistle:
 
Then it's an investment, just don't forget your other investments as well, and which ones pay out best. There is no reason to fear hard work, unless there is no return and it dominates your life.
 
I don't care for being an employee anymore. Like DogsOfJune, I had the 8-5:00+ job that paid well with company car and fuel, but after being involved in a car accident and getting screwed by my employer of 20+ years I told them to stick it and started up my own business - Never looked back.

Sure, I don't earn the money I used to earn - But I get to see my daughter grow up and I'm no longer borderline heart attack material. I'll never go back to being an employee.

I have absolutely no problem with being an employee and although at one point I thought about starting my own business, I realized I would not enjoy it at all. Now, I hated being a retail IT employee and it nearly destroyed me and it did wreck my health but now, I am a contractor / consultant in the IT field and it is far less stressful, pays more and the hours are specific.

That's about where I stand too, with the exception that its a civil engineering field instead of IT. Decent pay, ex still gets most of it, but the hours are called out

I was looking like I would be doing that too as my previous job was starting to really stress me out. Then I got lucky. I landed a great position at a very small, veteran owned company and life couldn't be better. Fully remote, work from home. The owners actually give a shit about us. So while there may be days where I work a little late or get a random late phone call I also have tons of flexibility because I don't have to work 8-5 every single day. I can split the hours up in whatever order fits my day and my family. I can even do much of what I need straight from my phone so I can fix things on the go. I couldn't ask for a better job right now.

Perfect! If I could have found such employment it may have been an option. But honestly, as a hard worker, I've found nothing but employers that take advantage of my work ethic only to screw me when I can't live up to their expectations anymore - Very disappointing.

We give our employees free healthcare, free dental, free sports activities, massage, year bonuses and gifts etc. Good workers are hard to find so we try to keep them. Everyone gets 1,5-2 months of vacation each year etc. If you have a child, both men and women are entitled to a maternity/paternity leave. Maternity leave is 4 months, paternity leave up to 9 weeks.

We just had one new father in the company and now a young lady is going to deliver in a few months...

Some of the vacations are mandatory, based on agreements/law, mind you.

No shit right? When my youngest kid was born I was online at the hospital putting out a fire instead of enjoying his newborn pictures being taken. I told work when my wife was 6 weeks along I was taking 2 full weeks and part of a 3rd week off (I had the PTO) because this was our 3rd kid and it would be another C-section so the wife needed help while healing. At the time I was the only IT person on staff so I told them we need to get somebody else the sooner the better. First I need help (I was swamped and overworked) and second we need coverage when I'm out. I mentioned this weekly and I didn't get any help until 2 weeks before the due date. Threw that poor temp kid to the wolves. I ended up having to go back to work earlier than desired because he just couldn't handle it. That was the beginning of the end for me at that place.
 
13ºF right now. If it gets into the 20s I may work on a little firewood. Maybe take the boy out on the ATV.

I had a similar experience when my daughter was born. I was forced to take more time off work due to complications, something management wasn't scared to voice their unwanted opinion over - To the point of threatening me with my job.

Where I live, by the time you take into consideration GST, stamp duties, double taxes on fuel, etc I believe I'd be paying about that if not slightly more.
