I just got a Radeon VII! Do I upgrade monitors?

I managed to trade away my dual RX 580 and 27 inch Dell setup for a Radeon VII and a 24 inch 1080P (only used as a secondary monitor) and I will be using my LG 2560x1080 75Hz Freesync unit to game on primarily.

I am tempted by the deals on 34 inch ultra-wides, do you think it's a waste of my card to do anything less than that? I am so conflicted. Does anybody in here use a Radeon VII to its full potential on a 1440p ultrawide? I can find lots of info on 4k performance, not so much on UW1440. Any insights are appreciated.
 
I also recently got a Radeon VII.

My advice?: Do what you want. It’s a graphics card. It’s not a waste if it’s doing what you want it to. So if you want a new monitor to pair it up with and you can be financially responsible while doing so, then go for it. If you don’t or can’t, then don’t.

EDIT: I would say the current top dog Ultrawide is the LG 34GK950F. It's also priced near the top. But it's the only one that has 144Hz, Freesync 2 (meaning a much bigger Freesync range, LFC for where there isn't, less lag and processing), 3440x1440 resolution, 10 bit (8+FRC) and HDR 400 (honestly meaningless, but at least it has some level of support).

If you're into waiting, then the next generation of 21:9 ultrawides that are slowly trickling out will be 3840x1600. The increased resolution of course will take more GPU power to drive, and if they don't support Freesync 2 I wouldn't bother. That also involves waiting and likely a $1k+ pricetag.

There are also other options like the 850F which is 32" and 2560x1440 with 144Hz and costs much much less at around $300 when it frequently goes on sale (check Slickdeals). Currently there is a deal on it for Costco members at $250. Major downside is that it is VA, which means you will experience black smear. There is no way around it. I personally prefer IPS colors, motion, and viewing angles to VA's high contrast. Every panel has its pros and cons, up to you to decide what is right for you.

If you want 4k high Hz, currently the Acer XV273k is the only game in town. Smaller at 27" and it's likely the Radeon VII can't push 144fps in most newer titles. The other major downside is no Freesync 2, and also no LFC.

I was using my VII on triple 1080@144hz. It handled it just fine just like the TXP that was in there. I switch between the two gpus.
 
I had a Radeon VII for 4K. It held up well at 60fps. Many games could be maxed out, or at least High settings and get usually well over 60fps.

21:9 1440p would be less pixels than 4K (by a lot) so it should handle it. Though your current monitor may be okay as well.

What is the size of your monitor? I ask because I'm on 2560x1080 34" and I've been happy with it. The desktop is pretty cramped, but games still look nice and performance is way better.

The advantage of 1080p UW is that you can get a higher refresh and your card can pump out more frames. I'm on 166Hz and can usually get that fps, or at worst 90fps which is still fine with G-Sync/FreeSync.

But if I was buying again, I would likely go for 3440x1440 due to the increased workspace on the desktop.
 
I got myself an MSI Optix MAG341CQ. 100Hz, 3440x1440, VA panel. Good enough for me I think, Black Friday has a way with my wallet. Amazon has some five month interest free payment plans so I decided I couldn't go wrong, especially when the price dropped by nearly 150 Canadian rubles. :)
 
Please make sure you sell these VII's in the forum come your next upgrade cycle. These things are monsters at double precision FP and there are lots of us in the DC community that would happily take them off your hands. ;)

Not only that but 16Gb are fairly interesting for compute rendering big scenes.
 
I have only had the monitor for the last week or so, but I am converted. Love the deep blacks, and the refresh rate is really nice over the 75hz I had before. This VII was really made to stretch its legs nicely at this resolution and framerate. Now, do I go from a 4790k to a 3700x? Probably not, I mostly game on this rig. We will see what the new year brings in terms of tech urges.

You will clearly be CPU limited with a Radeon VII. Even a Ryzen 2600X will be better than your 4790k because of the 6 cores. 3700X will be a huge improvement. Also I wouldn't have got a Radeon VII for gaming only. What a waste !

Meh, depends on the games you play. 4790K is a strong quad core, but its JUST a quad core. A number of games will saturate nearly 8 threads, and then combine the OS and any other applications running in the background and you'll find it's not hard to see a bottleneck with even the fastest of quad cores.

I saw your FS post for your signature system, I wish those were Canadian dollars and in Canada lol. I woulda hopped on that quickly. I have the same issue with kids saturating all my time, I don't game as much anymore, probably see the flood of used 2700x and hop on that in the future. Good luck with your sale.

Yeah, my times for games is pretty limited. I'm not in Canada but I'm a little flexible on the price. Thanks!
