1TB WD BLACK™ SN750 NVMe™ SSD - $124.99

Why can't the manufacturers find the time to disclose the cell technology on their SSD drives?

MLC, TLC, QLC, ...... It matters.

Will not buy an SSD if they refuse to disclose the full specs on the device.

.

What's really sad is that they don't even have the warranty details available on that page. (n) It's 5 years for anyone that's interested, but it should NOT have been so hard to find this information.

How do these compare to those Phison E-12 controllers that Microcenter has been selling? Tempted to buy this since I can't get Microcenters site to checkout.

Interesting that WD is using their own controller.

Yep, wouldn't have guessed that.

For some reason I thought the Samsung 860 EVO drives were MLC, not TLC. I prefer MLC, but I'm ok with current TLC technology.
I flat refuse to buy any QLC drives though.

.

Feel like a noob, trying to buy one and the "shop" button not working, no buy now button either.

I don't know about the comparison, but Microcenter sells their drives through Amazon as well (a few dollars more but with prime shipping).

Yeah, seems like the only place I see MLC anymore is with decommissioned enterprise ssds. Yeah QLC is a ripoff--it's the sshd of the ssd world, lol.

Bah, sshd aren't that bad. Lately they've been cheaper than regular drives, 2.5'' versions anyway.

Oh, I didn't say they were bad at all. It's just that QLC seems to be 'halfway there' just like an sshd is trying to be.

They are not MC brand drives. It was probably some exclusive deal done with for a year or something. You can find inland drives on other sites like NE also.

Yeah I also wonder how these compare to the $99 or less Microcenter 1tb nvme drives

Interesting that WD is using their own controller.

Are they? The bought Sandisk a couple years back so maybe they just changed branding? I don't know.

Western Digital is offering additional discounts today that works on these drives. Can combine with other items too. Both this drive and the WD Elements 8TB (good shucker) are $129.99 before discount.

Discount is:
Spend $400, save $100
Spend $200, save $45
Spend $100, save $20

Comes out to:
1x = $109.99 ea
2x = $107.49 ea
4x = $104.99 ea

Great prices, especially if say you need both an SSD and a spinner.

They are very comparable - I put together a small list of the top drives and you can see that the sequential speeds and IOPS numbers are definitely in the same ballpark as the E12 drives.

Although there may be other factors to consider - I'm pretty certain that Maxx mentioned that the WD Black has higher idle power consumption so may not be ideal if laptop battery life is the ultimate concern. Also one review site noted that the Samsung drives (I think) felt less "snappy" in general use than the Phison or SM2262EN drives, although I doubt most people would notice a difference without using them side by side.

Pretty sure they are SanDisk controllers as noted above, although some reviews and spec sheets refer to the controller as "Custom" or "WD in-house".

These drives were somewhat compelling before, but at these lower price points they are very attractive IMO. I don't know if they're "better" or "worse" than any of the other top drives, but they're a contender IMO.[/QUOTE]

Yes, the WD Black/SN750 seems to have high idle power usage according to reviews. Some sites (like AnandTech) believe it might be due to their method of testing but I've seen it all over the place, although it could be a reporting issue of some sort. Worth noting is that the SN750 specifically has a "Gaming Mode" over the Black (2018) which basically disables lower power states so the wake-up latency is much lower. In either case, the SN750's workload power efficiency is unmatched.

Yes, the controller is proprietary, it's a tri-core ARM Cortex-R5 design. It's somewhat similar to Samsung's tri-core SATA controllers (e.g. MJX) where you would presumably have one core for writes, one for reads, and one for host interaction. This enables it to be more powerful than the dual-core SM2262/EN, more efficient than the dual-CPU/quad-core E12/E16, and better perf/W than the penta-core Polaris/Phoenix (which is likely similar to the E12 with an additional host core).

WD's physical layout/design of the drive is such that the controller and DRAM is in-between (equidistant) to the NAND packages. This makes for a very efficient datapath, which is why the base 1500 MB/s TLC write rate is so high. Further, this performance is stable even when the drive is fuller because it only has a small, static SLC cache, and does not rely on on-chip folding/copying (which can have a read latency penalty). This makes it the best prosumer drive on the market in my opinion - yes, the 970 EVO Plus is faster and has a better all-around performance profile, but it's also far more expensive and full of frills like a hybrid SLC cache. The SN750 is about as close to MLC as you can get, keeping in mind that a NVMe drive with a large SLC cache that STAYS in the cache will be BETTER than MLC in some respects. That is to say, if you have workloads that dislike SLC caching (and most enterprise SSDs lack a SLC drive completely, e.g. 5100 ECO), it's as good as it gets for TLC right now.

I have one coming in today and I'll probably post some details on my subreddit if I get the chance but of course feel free to drop any questions here.

And this works just for grabbing those 8/10/12TB drives too. As an interesting data point, even the 14TB drive is under $300.

People make way too much about QLC's limitations. For the vast majority of people in the vast majority of circumstances there will never be a problem with QLC drives. Obviously there are uses and scenarios where they make no sense over other memory types, but people still get way too worked up over QLC. That said, when better memory types are at these prices its definitely worth the extra $10-$20 bucks to go with TLC over QLC.

Cool deal, even though I bought several of these earlier this year for a bit less, and was getting ready to buy some more for client builds, so I just bought a bunch of these, therefore that should hold me until early 2020 :)

Today get a 1TB black spinner for free with WD_BLACK SN750 NVMe SSD 512G ($150) or 1TB ($180)

FWIW: 1TB is $130 on amazon, so is the WD Black 1TB worth $60 ?

Meh. With SSD prices today, I don't see the value in WD Blacks anymore. There was a time when it might have been worth paying the premium for a faster HDD and a 1TB black might have made a good game drive. These days, you can get get a cheap 1TB SSD for ~$80 that's definitely going to make a better game drive. And as a storage drive, paying $60 for 1TB is stupid when 8TB drives can be had $100-$120 if you hit a (frequent) sale.

Did anyone receive it? I ordered mine on December 5th and it is still not shipped...?

^ I'd say something wrong with your order. I got my SN750 1TB yesterday, shipped from LA (Tuesday) to S.F(Thursday) UPS Ground. I ordered around 9am PST on Monday 12/9, later in the day availability showed 2-3 weeks.

Most hard drives now are used for bulk storage and in that arena the Black still makes sense as it is a better made drive with a longer warranty. Not all hard drives are the same, that's for sure.

Just fyi, not sure why mine was so fast but I ordered on 12/8/19 and received it on 12/12 in CA. Haven't had a chance to use it as i'm waiting for other parts of the computer though.

(949) 672-7000 should get you a human to discuss your order.

So I spent 35 minutes on the phone (on hold most of the time). Not sure if that is a training issue or they systems are ancient, but they could not locate my information nor update on my order... It shows pending on their end. He offered to check my order status online. Lets say I was not very happy wit his offer so now their "escalation" team will call me in 2-3 hours. First time dealing with WD and I think this is my last.

I just called today to cancel my order, while they fortunately were able to find my order # and ordered to cancel it in their system, it might not cancel completely and will have to refuse the order or I have to ship it back.

Called again today, according to the rep it is back ordered, estimated shipping time 3-4 weeks. This drive is available on amazon but not from wd directly. So no ssd and no deals available.
