Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

reviews are out...sounds like a good but not great game...story sounds like the weak point but overall sounds like a solid game

one thing I keep seeing in the reviews is how the Dark Souls-lite combat doesn't fit within the SW universe...a light saber is supposed to be the baddest weapon in the universe and yet even late game it takes several strikes to kill even the smallest enemies

I feel like this is a complaint for every SW game where you play as a Jedi. Happened in KOTOR, happened in the Jedi Knight games, etc.

Funny enough, the opposite of what most people thought. A Star Wars game getting good reviews, and Pokemon getting shit on via Metacritic.

Guess I know which of these I'm playing first today.

Looking to be a solid game but still refuse to give money to shitty companies like EA, Bethesda and Blizzard.

I won't buy EA's games anymore, but I still give them money for Origin Premier now and again, mostly because it includes a number of games that aren't even EA like The Surge, etc.

So I enjoy a couple weeks of BFV every other month or so, and i'm now on the second planet in this game and i'm enjoying it. It's well worth the money for a month of Origin Premier to play it.

I played for about two hours last night. On PC, the game looks way better than it did in the pre-release videos which I can assume were all done on consoles. The game really does benefit from a controller as dodging on a keyboard is a bit rough. That's the only challenge I've faced with mouse and keyboard play. The only thing that bothers me about the level design, is (at least on the second planet) that it looks clearly like this is a game world instead of you moving through a recreation or simulation of a real place. In other words, it looks contrived as hell. I went to the Zeffo homeworld third, and it masks the movement mechanics and map design much more convincingly. The first planet isn't so bad either. It's clearly a game world in the sense that you can see the obvious platforming mechanics, wall grab sections and so on. However, the visuals in that are good enough to distract you from this fact most of the time. The view is amazing and the world interesting. It's dark, gritty and looks like something we'd actually want in Star Wars.

I also like the lightsaber customization so far as well. So far, the characters are solid, albeit a bit bland. Being only two hours in, its hard to judge whether or not this will change. So far, I like the 2nd sister the best out of the bunch. AI combatants are pretty easy if you encounter just one or two. When grouped up, they seem to coordinate their attacks so that timing your attack becomes critical. There is a sense of urgency as well because it never lets you block indefinitely. The game also punishes you for falling off of stuff and dying. Even the meditation / rest system comes at a cost. I like these elements as it makes their use something of a strategic choice.

Combat itself is relatively challenging and rewarding. Non-humanoid enemies can be cleaved in half, dismembered or decapitated. Using a lightsaber in a game hasn't been this satisfying in ages. More importantly, its difficult at times without being overly convoluted or frustrating. Some of you console veterans or controller users may find this a bit easier to play as your used to this type of game play. For me, its been years since I played anything remotely similar. I'm not much of a console gamer and though I do have them, they largely either play Blu-Rays or collect dust. I have a half dozen XBOX One games and maybe 12 XBOX 360 games. I had that console from launch to give you an idea of how much I used it.

I tried getting my XBOX 360 Wireless controller to work with Windows 10 to make things potentially easier, but that was a no go. As I said, I may just stick with mouse and keyboard if I can figure out how to dodge both left and right more easily. The way it is now, dodging left is easier given the positioning required for my fingers to hit both Z and a A vs. Z and D. I may try remapping this as well, but I may not find a good solution for this. Aside from this one thing, I haven't experienced any problems with platforming or combat. Though I will say the menus definitely feel like they were designed for a controller, and Respawn even tells you this when you first fire up the game. It encourages controller use.

The narrative is solid so far, though it absolutely breaks no ground from what I can tell. The only criticism I'd levey against it would be the pacing at the beginning.

What I mean by the pacing issue comes down to the seemingly non-existent time between your use of Force powers (which no one should have been able to see) to the time it takes the Empire to arrive in search of a Force user. It feels forced and a bit contrived. At the very least it raises questions. How did the Empire know you had used the Force only about 20 minutes earlier? How did they get there so fast? Were they just nearby? Did the 2nd Sister experience a Force vision of you? Did Imperial Intelligence track you down ahead of time because Cal had been there too long? A matter of equal plot convenience is the fact that your new friends show up just in time to help rescue you. These plot points are something that jumped out at me, and its sad that these don't bother me all that much given the state of Star Wars in films being so much worse. I still hold out some hope that how the Empire found Cal so quickly will be explained a bit later.

First day one game I’ve bought in a while. Very pretty, but I regret it because it makes me now want to upgrade my 2500k tv rig. Haha.

Not far in yet, but so far plays like a star wars themed tomb raider.

Not a fan of the lack of autosaves or manual progress saves. Ugh. I hate playing things over and over because...adulting.

I have the PC specific wireless receiver. The newest drivers for it on the Microsoft site are for Windows 7.

If it didn't download and install drivers for it automatically, check device manager for unknown peripherals or devices and use the "update driver" option. Should be able to find the 360 wireless receiver driver from the list of drivers.

official support is dropped but i used to use mine by forcing it to use the win7 drivers. until it blew up earlier this year. then i bit the bullet and got a xb1 pc receiver and controller.
What do you mean blew up? My XB360 wireless adapter stopped working, but I ordered a resistor then removed and resoldered a new one back and it is working fine again (but I use a PS4 controller normally).
Here is the link in case you want to try it: https://replayproject.wordpress.com...x-360™-wireless-gaming-receiver-for-windows®/
FYI I recommend getting a resistor rather than the quick fix they use for safety. If you buy the resistor, just a warning, they are TINY. I HIGHLY recommend you buy at least 2, if you sneeze, it will disappear lol (personal experience I lost one of the 2 I bought).

I agree with a lot of your points. Playing on the PS4 myself, and the game is built perfectly for the controller, no doubt about that. I think they captured the sense of atmosphere very well, and I’m loving the combat. One of the better games I’ve bought this year for sure.

I knew I wanted the game as soon as I saw the first gameplay video, and it hasn’t disappointed.

Good to know.

Honestly, the Xbox One controller is such a huge upgrade in so many ways that I would just bite the bullet and move on. The newer Xbox One controllers are bluetooth now as well instead of whatever proprietary RF they were before which required an adapter. So if you already have bluetooth on your setup you won't need to buy an adapter.

I don't let that crap bother me and I just play a game if it looks fun to me no matter who makes it.

Isn't the regular adapter a lot more reliable than using Bluetooth on the pc though?

The RF will, of course, work across a room better. That being said, if you're right next to your computer it's not going to be any better than Bluetooth at such a short distance.

I would like to agree but I don't want to support companies that are destroying gaming with their destructive practices that are spreading to th industry. A good game here and their will absolve all their wrong doings in the past. They have a lot to make up for before they have my trust.

I guess I don't play or have any interest in the games that are/were controversial. Well the only one I can think of was Dead Space 3 and I was extremely pissed off at EA for how they destroyed that franchise.

And it is a common practice with EA. Forcing predatory MT in games. Releasing unfinished games under th guise of gaming as a service. Killing off deleveopers they buy up after a game that doesn't meet their expectations. They be n vote th worst company several years in a row for a reason.

Its a rock and a hard place situation for consumers. On one hand, it seems like good game and that should be supported. On the other hand, its EA. The game failing all but guarantees we will never see anything like this again from them and that EA will proclaim that "single-player is dead, people only want live-services". It will also tell them that no one truly cares about games not having abusive practices like loot boxes and microtransactions. However, supporting it still means supporting EA. There's no good answer or good solution.

Yes, they won because people are morons and have no perspective. The fact that people voted for a video game company over Monsanto is fucking ridiculous.

If they can get all the little stutters fixed that many people are reporting then I will definitely grab this as soon as it goes on a decent sale. I just can't justify regular price for a game when I've got such a massive backlog as it is.
