No real surprises. This looks like the king of 16 core CPUs, if you need a 16 core CPU.

For performance, perhaps the obvious that was expected was observed: AMD’s 3950X knocks down walls that only a couple of years ago seemed impenetrable. When compared to its immediate rivals, The Ryzen 9 3950X smashes through several of our tests published here, such as the Photoscan, Blender, Handbrake, and 7-zip, while CineBench R20 and SPEC in our benchmark database also have some strong numbers.

....

For users who want the best without going to the high-end desktop, the Ryzen 9 3950X has the best overall score out of all the chips we’ve ever tested.

If you thought the 3900X didn't have enough power, the 3950X is your answer.

https://www.kitguru.net/components/cpu/luke-hill/amd-ryzen-9-3950x-cpu-review/11/
KitGuru says: AMD has delivered a performance king for the cost-effective, mainstream AM4 platform that is powerful enough to wipe out much of AMD’s and Intel’s HEDT offerings. All that whilst maintaining laughably good power efficiency.

Gamers Nexus: No print article yet. :(

I think the silliest part of this launch is that the 3950X is achieving this sort of performance while consuming marginally less power than a 9900K(S) by most accounts.

Now, to see if you can actually buy one...

Even LTT had really nothing positive to say for shintel. It smashed them in practically all areas, effectively matches in gaming, uses less power (probably even half once the 9900s are given max turbo etc) and has twice the threads. What the fuck, Lisa? What have you done!
LLT seems to have similar feels as I do - this is the most exciting CPU since the Opteron 165 came and destroyed the market.
I can't wait till next year when the process improvements allow these clocks to trickle down to the cheaper CPUs...

Inb4 >OH BUT MY 480P ELITE E-SPORTS CHAMBIONSHUP CS FPS IS 3% HIGHER WITH THE 99999KFC AN I CAN FEELZ IT AMD SUXX LOLOL

So much for those ipc arguments. I was surprised also, but glad to see real competition.
Zen+ had comparable IPC already in many workloads if you actually looked around at the information and didn't take what some people here said at face value...
Zen2 just took that to another level. Bring on Zen3 with EUV, cheaper and faster to make.

Annand Tech summed up their review succinctly:

That should be entirely expected when comparing a 14nm chip to a 7nm one...

This is fantastic.

I'm still debating if I want to make do with the PCIe lanes of the 3950x and get the max boost clocks it provides, or be ok with 300mhz slower max boost clocks and go with the Threadripper 3960x.

I think I am going to be going back and forth about this until the very last second they appear on the market for sale.

It will probably come down to what is in stock if you are buying at launch. The 3950x will be the new 3900x in availability.

i'd wait and see, hopefully we see some more unique layouts from the AIB's for the insane amount of PCIE lanes instead of all the AIB's basically releasing the same thing with only 1 or 2 minor IO differences.

If you are planning on last second buying one of these you’ll most likely be disappointed. If people thought the 3900x was hard to find...

Or worse. I struggled to find a 3900x to the point I almost gave up. I actually have a life, so hitting f5 at every retailer obsessively wasn’t an option. But for a casual buyer the stock was non existent

Doesn't that depend on what the single thread is doing?
It's the first AMD processor that clearly outstrips a flagship Intel processor in an unbiased benchmark. That, in and of itself, is a win for AMD. Not saying it's an earth shattering indication of how AMD is the second coming of Jesus, just saying that it's impressive to see AMD turn things around when I figured they were fucked.

Cheers to AMD ;) I sincerely hope they don't fuck it up again. God knows we need the damn competition in the microprocessor market, it's been way too long since we've seen it.

There is a good chance that the delay had something to do with AMD building up a stockpile of the processors, through binning and such. The 3900 eventually caught up with demand, even with the information about TSMC being stressed to meet demand I suspect the 3950 will sell out, but it might recover faster than the 3900 shortage did. We can only hope.

Only good side of this release (3950x) is it'll mean more 3900xs available.
Seen at least 2-3 on here in the last weeks at good prices.

srsly what the actual fuck ?
LOL makes two of us, was in the memes folder and seemed perfect for this post - an angry, bald, baseball hat wearing NPC triggered by AMD.
I think they come from r/ayymd? Not my usual place to go lol.
Intel vs AMD.png

I wouldn't consider >$700 CPU, to be mainstream.
Fair but people will say it's a mainstream socket. End of next year with Zen3 it will be mainstream price..
Same thing happened with $1k Extreme edition CPUs and the old Athlon X2s etc...

Ever look WCCF at comments. It's a meme cesspool. I'd prefer if we left that sewage there.

Might have to sell my 3700X.

Now if AMD can get their GPU's up to snuff they'll be sitting pretty.

These arguments again? juanrga argued the same thing a while back. I don't need to see this pointless bickering about "what is mainstream" hashed out again.

I’m tempted. This is the same price that I paid for my 6950X a few years back. But...I’m not sure if I need to upgrade just yet. :(

Lol no. If Intel doesn't counter with anything in the next several year you will see AMD's prices start going up not down. Just look at TR.

by last second I mean, "when they pop up in stores and I have to make a decision before they sell out"

To clarify I was meaning more EOL stock/used stock they will get cheaper once Zen3 launches.
But yes, just like Intel there is no reason to lower prices if you have the best and people are paying for it. Hopefully they don't get too greedy come Zen3, current pricing is pretty in line with existing products (seen a TR2-TR3 comparison recently it's +100-200 with much higher performance and features for the price) and isn't 'unfair' IMO. If you want a cheap Zen2 CPU, 3600 isn't much.. $194? That's perfectly reasonable.

WCCF 'shudders'... yeah that place is sewage in the comment section. Only seen it a few times and it's like unmoderated chatrooms in the early 00s.
That said [H] has always had a bit of memes and shitposting, I don't see the issue now and then but will try and tone it back a little. Cheers.

That's entirely too simplistic a view of the situation. Core counts have doubled and this is, in some situations, this highest-clocked 7nm chip AMD produces. I feel like this level of efficiency was by no means a foregone conclusion.

Given how modern chips power-gate components not in use on very fast intervals, I was expecting it, to be honest.

AMD will have a momentary advantage because of this process node leg up, but it won't last forever, so they better get their asses in gear and optimize the shit out of it before Intel gets their new process nodes out.
