The Mandalorian- new Disney+ Star Wars series

Don't forget Capirca. Pretty bad near the end (as was BSG imo) but interesting if you're into the whole VR/avatar stuff

Caprica coulda been decent. But, it relied on incredibly common beats for the subject matter of A.I./VR/etc. It was really boring to me and felt like they just took some super common stuff and tried to re-mix it and hope people bought it.

so who's ready for some Mandalorian??...the new Disney+ platform launches tomorrow and Mandalorian with it...the series is getting excellent buzz and comparisons to the feel of the original trilogy...

good bump, we should see early hot takes from people binging it tomorrow, right?

WHO WATCHED IT?

DID TOMMY LIKEY?

IS THERE NUDITY?

HOW MANY DECAPITATIONS?

BEST MOMENTS?

WHATS A MONDO-LAUREN?

no binging...Disney is dropping 1 episode a week...although this week they're actually dropping 2 new episodes- one on Tuesday and another on Friday...after that it's a weekly schedule

EP1 one is out. I'm a fan of the main actors, Pascal, Carl Weathers, Carano, and Esposito. lol, Werner Herzog is in it, what the?

Not sure how to feel about first episode, but with most series it takes time to get into it. No nudity, not as much death as expected. I feel like it is throwing a lot of nostalgia out there. The final bounty surprised me, will be interesting to see where that goes. Also not so sure Mandalorian is being used singularly here.

Disney+ has a ton of content...all the SW movies have been confirmed to have been remastered in 4K with Dolby Vision and Atmos...but it's definitely not as smooth as the Apple TV+ launch...I'm getting occasional errors, audio sometimes stops working, 'resume' setting disappears

my home just goes straight to error when i first add the app/log in to it for my different devices. i was able to search fine, and after watching The Mandalorian my home screen seems to be fixed.

with my Apple TV 4K I keep having an issue where subtitles are enabled for everything...even after I disable it for a specific show/movie it automatically gets re-enabled the next time I resume that program

It's probably good. Disney doesn't have full control over the original saga so they wanted to kill it and give birth to new, multiple, 'star wars' stories. They got first half from their movies, the killing the old saga. They were probably hoping for the 2nd part to come from their trilogy. That's not going to happen.

The more streaming that comes out, even actual COOL streaming that does full 4k really starts to make me fear for the Xfinity/Comcrap 1TB data cap. I got close last month with 890GB and I didn't even watch any 4k stuff, however my kid streaming shit constantly (sometimes not even watching it) made me think real hard about the differences between HAVING IT and streaming it. If I had the video on my system I can use Plex server and stream it easy peasy, yet the 15th time this month my kid watches the same Thomas and Friends episode and that's me downloading the thing 15 times in a row... just wish finding kids shows online was an easier thing.

It's got a slow burn feel to it doesn't? It's not hiding the Sergio Leone themes at all.

A little cliche

Intro was good

middle was eh(why do we care about the whole riding thing)

Ending was good

I finished watching Episode 1...very nice start to the series...the production values are movie quality...it looks like one of the main SW movies from a visual standpoint...the use of practical effects is a nice touch and it totally feels like classic old school Star Wars...so far I like the secondary characters played by Carl Weathers, the droid played by Taika Waititi and Werner Herzog moreso then the main Mandalorian character...tough to really relate to him when he's always covered in full armor

the ending to the episode was pretty epic and has major implications for the larger SW universe...I can't wait to see where they're going with this

some negatives: I watched it in 4K Dolby Vision and thought black levels could be better...they were a bit crushed, probably a side effect of streaming but it didn't look inky black to me...I also wasn't a fan of the closing credits music...didn't sound like a SW theme...they should at least try and replicate the overall John Williams sound

so if baby Yoda species is 50 years old that would mean he was born around the same time as Anakin...interesting

I thought it had the production quality, visuals, etc, but it didn't add up to anything really compelling. Very rote storytelling so far TBH. Hoping the follow up episodes get a little more daring.

I’ll give more thoughts when I get home from work, but I could definitely feel the Leone vibe from the first episode. The Mandalorian himself has a “Man With No Name” quality to him. Be interesting to see where they take it.

Zero or low confidence in Disney and Star wars.
Honestly SW fell to the bottom of the stack as far as sci fi goes in my view/experience.
I probably will get the service, and will check it out regardless.
They are also doing a Loki series (look forward to that, I love how the actor portays it. )
They are doing She Hulk, Ms. Marvel and MoonKnight? Or some such too..

I kind of agree with this. I am not too hot on these new remakes and would rather cozy up with older versions on replay.

Spoiler-Free thoughts on the first episode:

Holy crap this show has a freaking budget. It looks like an actual movie, wow.
The effects work is easily on par with what the Disney SW movies have been doing the last few years. The CG wasn't perfect everywhere, but it was really good. The practical effects were good as well.
The cast seems really good so far, though there wasn't much of them to get to know.
I mentioned this above, but there is definitely a Sergio Leone feel to the show. The pacing is very "deliberate". The entire episode is a slow build. They're clearly taking cues from Spaghetti Western films.
It was a solid first episode that has me interested in seeing more.

This is an extreme nit-pick but the last bounty reveal was great but also a bit annoying. I'm not super fond of the trope where just because an alien species lives a super long time than that means they stay as toddlers or little children for an extremely long amount of time. The whole idea of a 50 year old baby screams of them taking the easy way to try and hide the reveal.
The wall of carbonite bounties was great. Made me wonder what each of those people had done to earn their bounty.
IG-11 was great. The whole exchange during the fire fight and him talking with Mando before that, just perfect.
I really really hope IG-11 isn't dead. They need to bring him back and have him hunt down Mando.
I kind of hope they never reveal Mando's real name or go too deep into his backstory. Keep it as the quick flashes we got already and don't have it fully expanded on. They've given him so much of a "Man With No Name" feel already that I think it could hurt if they reveal too much about him. Wouldn't complain if he never removed the helmet as well, since that was set up early in the episode.

The ending was the thing I most disliked. If you are referring to the reveal in your spoilers.

why would you dislike it?...we've only ever seen 2 of those species in all the movies...we know next to nothing about them...it'll be interesting to explore their origins and history

It setting up for cutesy, bounty hunter and baby crap. Gag.

I enjoyed the first episode, mostly for the throwbacks to episode 4 - 6:
Ugnaught
Quarren
IG88 (finally got to see him fight)
GNK Power droid
The Jaba's palace greeting droid
The creatures that were ridden had a very episode 4-5 feel (very dewback like)
The jerk in the bar had a very Doctor Evazan feel, really that whole first scene had a very Mos Eisley cantina feel to it.

you're not looking at the big picture in terms of how this will impact the SW universe

I don't give two shits about the impact on the SW universe. I just want a cool show on it's own, not dependent on nostalgia wanking.

I already had Hulu and now I have it and the Disney +. :) It looks like there is going to be quite a bit of content to watch for a while and I love that. I am also going to eventually watch the series in mentioned in this thread again. I ditched Netflix months ago because they stopped entertaining and got in your face political 24 x 7. If Netflix does not change their ways, the competition is going to drive them out of business.

How is he watching it? I know that on my tablets I can download the new Disney+ shows as well as on Netflix and Amazon Prime. You might be better served using the smart TV cast option to stream the downloaded show from a phone/tablet. Also handy for trips.

Overall, it's a great start to the show. I am refusing to pick the show apart. Everyone already has the stuff they don't like, I would say the show is a 9/10. It is excellent, well executed, feels like Star Wars and has a lot of potential. Hopefully it maintains it's gritty underworld look and feel and fleshes it out.
1. Movie Quality Production Values
2. Excellent Cast, well acted.
3. The Mando really reminds me of Master Chief from Halo
4. Story is decent
5. Some nicely shoehorned in humor thanks to Nick Nolte

I have spoken

Netflix has become like HBO for me, I subscribe for a short period to binge things I want to catch up on and then drop it. Netflix does have some good shows, a number of which they took over from other production companies. The big ones for me are The Last Kingdom, Mindhunter, Umbrella Academy, and Altered Carbon. Most of the rest of the shows I have already binged and there are no new seasons on the horizon.

I would tend to agree. I felt like I wanted to care, but I just didn't. The beginning and middle was just OK for me. The ending was more interesting for me.
Of course, most brand new shows require at least a one to two episode grace period to set up the characters and narrative.

I think the first episode gave a number of hints on things that could turn into interesting story lines eventually, but that are not as interesting without more context.
Baby Yoda / whatever they eventually call the species is interesting. The species itself is pretty rare. Possibly all force sensitive?
Originally I thought he was just a guy who found the armor. Now it seems there is a whole underground that he is part of?

Apple TV+ launched recently but they don't seem to have anything amazing worth watching at the moment...but they do have amazing bitrates on their programming...much higher quality streaming then anything from Netflix, Prime Video, Vudu, Disney+ etc...

On FiOS in TX. No cap. :)

NetFlix should allow heavy users to have a caching server in their home. For folks like you, that you child watches the same stuff over and over, it would be huge. Cache to the local box, then stream locally. Netflix has a multi-TB box small ISPs can deploy that does just this so they lessen the congestion on their backbone uplinks.

That's going to be my family for Disney+. According to my math, all the 8 episodes should be available by 1/1/20. I'll subscribe then and binge for 30 days. We already own most of the Disney content we want. Trying to get companies OUT of my pocket, not in.

On ATT Fiber here and signed up for basic cable to avoid caps.
Also, I signed up for the prepay 3 years of Disney+ for the $140 (so like $3.80 per month). I had some Disney stuff on VHS, but that stuff is long gone. I plan on going through all the old Disney movies I grew up on (not the new live action remake crap) as well as the old shows with my kids over time. They even have a section labeled 90's nostalgia, to help remind me of things to watch with them. I try to limit TV time as is, so being able to sit with them and watch an old movie with them before bed on Friday/Saturday night means it may take me all 3 years to get through everything.
