Yesterday, AMD officially unveiled its 3rd Generation Ryzen Threadripper CPU lineup, featuring up to 32 cores and 64 threads on the new sTRX4 socket-based TRX40 platform. While the initial lineup is planned for launch on the 25th of November, there's one part that wasn't included or teased as planned and that part is the flagship Ryzen Threadripper 3990X.

The previous embargo plan for AMD included a teaser for their Ryzen Threadripper 3990X flagship chip. What's so special about this chip is that it would feature 64 cores and 128 threads, twice that of the recently announced Ryzen Threadripper 3970X which would be retailing at $1999 US. AMD was expected to tease it but due to a change in the embargo, they planned to reserve the teaser for a later date.

that's an ass load of cores. not for me but great for someone who needs them!

Well wow, seems like a product so niche it will either only sell a few or people on tight budget that can't afford Epyc will buy thinking it's as good as Epyc.
If the later and proven somewhat close to truth, aren't they losing potential revenue on Epyc ? Maybe not since those would probably no buy it anyway... and it's a nice middle finger to Intel lol.

See what they price it at first... from what I understand the other TR parts are priced slightly above Intel per core.

Not like there’s an intel part to compare against at that core count! lol

Does Intel sell 32+ cores on the mainstream market ? Comparison is meaningless if not.
Does Intel offer that many PCIe same number of core ? We also shall see how the new high core count clocks without exotic cooling ...

Please compare apples to apples ... unless all you do is gaming in which case you should not even consider those options.

Just saying it might not be as cheap as some people expect. It seems like AMD didn’t take the value route with Threadripper, nor should they. It’s still amazing value vs the alternatives.

I have to imagine the heat dissipation might not be bad given the overall component size.

Well please define cheap ? This 64 cores is niche and has no competition at all...
The lower core counts may be a little more pricey per core than Intel but let's be honest... Intel does not have anything to propose at TR and for the lower core count, choose Zen.

This CPU is above and beyond anything on the consumer market and this new generation offer so much improvement (other than core count and price) that I really can't understand your comments.
Anyway, you're entitled to your opinion.
 
Judging by other high core chips out there, this one will likely be at least in the $3,000 - $4,000 range.

Which, strictly speaking, is not "cheap" BUT for what you are getting it is a whole lot of performance if you have the use case.

Not quite. Even at a generous 4Ghz that’s only 8 Tflops compute and 100GB/s bandwidth that has to be shared with the OS, game and driver while also running graphics rendering.

And with no help from hardware rasterizers, tessellators, texture units or memory compression.

Would be lucky to beat an RX550.

Intel has no comparison at almost any performance metric or price point or function point now they're utterly outclassed. AMD had far more pcie, bandwidth and speed. The only thing they have is Intel scalable for one or two niche uses. AMD even beats them in the few AVX512 apps, unoptimised. Many people have not seen the benchmarks at servethehome.com but they paint a Grimm picture.

TR and Epyc are at least two years ahead currently.
AMD can price how they like, they're that much better.

You forget that intel just their prices by half what a month ago? So compared to the regular intel prices TR is cheap.

I know a couple engineers where I'm consulting at that would trip over one another to get their hands on one of these in a workstation. Considering one of the guys is rocking something 28 Physical Cores on his machine. Lots of the guys here run fluid dynamics, heavy CAD stress simulations and a number of other applications. IF these every gain widespread acceptance (perhaps I should be saying if AMD ever gains widespread acceptance) I could see them being put to use, even if overkill.

The 28/56 Intel they are rocking was likely a helluva lot more expensive.

I'd still rock one of these 64 core monsters. I'm bent between 24 and 32 core right now. But I'm so in love with my 3900x ipc, the 24 core might be the closest thing to it.

If I did get a 64 core I'd use it for 3 or 4 years and then make it become my home server chip.

Fwiw the TR3's will have same/similar IPC. TR3 is just so freaking insane!

Many say it's too hard to migrate, tools, someone else goes first, blah blah. Sounds like this needs to be the key focus of AMD going forwards - making that easier so that excuse isn't there.

Microsoft, Google etc are all using it in their new installations. That's where AMD is winning best currently.

Word is Netflix is next, or mulling the idea.
