Windows 10 users fume: Microsoft, where's our 'local account' option gone?

Do you have to turn every discussion into an argument?

Quick, look over there ----------------> :D

And you clearly skipped over this line or you would not have said what you said:

Now, I am pleased to see there are more options for people and I have always been a more options are better kind of person. However, I also am not a person who is going to limit myself to only one of those options, since there is no need for that. Windows is a solid Workstation, gaming and all around operating system, even today. Linux is a really good programmers OS and second option for those who want to use it as a Workstation and sometimes gaming OS.

Star Control Origins is probably going to end in disappointment according to ProtonDB and Lutris.

Well you've got about 8000 more titles to go, try to pick some that are actually ranked as working.

Nope, I do not do things that way, anymore than I did back in 2004 or so when I tried running my games in Linux then. (I used Cedega back in 2004 but, they did not support the games I played. I even paid up subscription fee for a couple of months but, nothing ever improved for my games.) I want to play specific games and they have to work, not the other way around. Now, Wolfenstein The Old Blood worked, although I am stuck at a certain boss battle and gave up. :)

Of course you don't, we both know why. A futile exercise if you're going to go out of your way to run titles that are known not to work.

Well one of the titles you wanted running was Shadow Of The Tomb Raider? I just installed the demo and was playing it just fine. You have to give it time to buffer textures and performance is ok, definitely playable at high settings at 1920 x 1080 on my PC that's really not designed to be an all out gamer.

Too bad the majority can't experience the LTSC edition. It's great, doesn't come with a single Win 10 app. No cortana, store, edge. And it never does a feature upgrade. That version runs very well.

Dude, I want to play what I want to play, period. And yes, we do know why, because I want to play what I want to play. As for Shadow of the Tomb Raider, I finished that back in August so I did not see a reason to install it at this time.

Oh, and I did not go out of my way for jack shit, I opened Steam, decided I wanted to play a certain game and tried it, period. I am not going to play what someone else says I should play.

Edit: Oh wait, I do go out of my way for people in real life, so there is that.

I just bought a new little Asus Vivobook L203MA and made the mistake of connecting to WiFi during the OOBE setup and it would NOT let me create a offline account, even with a hard reboot and cutting the router off. Just kept throwing a unable to connect error and try again button. I ended up just wiping it (which was a pain in the ass because of fastboot) and putting pop_os on it.

Microsofts heavy handedness has pushed me away from using any Microsoft products for good.
Would have been easier to just login with the MS account, then go in and create a local account then delete the MS account from the computer.

That is a workaround I’ve used before. Sucks that you have to jump through a few hoops though.

WIndows runs like an OS written in high level language like BASIC. Once computers got insanely more powerful with insanely more resources, it started to work smoothly.

Not at all accurate, Windows 10 worked smoothly for a very long time. Windows NT 4.0 and on worked extremely well. (It is after all, based upon the old OS/2 three ring model that was very stable and fast.) The 95 and 98 version where pretty good, in so far as the games ran fine and you could still play DOS base games as well. Backwards compatibility has always been extremely important, which is why you can run a number of programs and games on Windows 10 from back in the 90's and 2000's, out of the box. (Not everything, however.)

Oh for christ sake, stop getting so nasty.

You don't need to run Linux to work out that the titles you're trying to run don't work, that information is already readily available. You may as well be trying to run PS4 games under Linux and claim that you'll play what you want to play!

I mentioned Shadow Of The Tomb Raider as you commented in another thread on how you were thinking of running it, sorry for offering advice.

I actually find older versions of Windows (eg: Windows 2000) run faster on period hardware like a Pentium 3 than Windows 10 on modern hardware using mechanical HDD's. I honestly find Windows 10 on mechanical HDD's annoyingly slow, and most are still running mechanical HDD's and don't even know what an SSD is.

Under Windows 10 Home the ability to do so under Settings > Accounts no longer works. You have to use the netplwiz utility to remove the MS account and create a new local account.

Dude, quite your whining and zealotry please, it is getting tiring. If you do not like my response then simply ignore it and move on. I already said what I said and I meant it, I am going to try what I want and if it does not work, I will say so, period. And you did not offer advice, you attempted to shove something down my throat, minus the Shadow of the Tomb Raider point.

If this is the case, then how do you add another Microsoft account and remove the old one, if you do not know about netplwiz?

I would definitely check ProtonDB ( https://www.protondb.com/ ) first before installing a Windows game on Linux.

You might find that your game doesn't work at all (saving you time and headache) or that it works but with specific config changes that you can do (also saving you time and headache).

Or if there are 2 games you might want to play, 1 works, 1 does not, that will make your decision easier.

Thanks but, nah, I am just going to try whatever game I come across and see what happens. :) There is no frustration to save because there is no frustration, I like to do things and see what happens. :) As for the protondb, at the very least, it will help with some additional commands, if they are needed.

Yeah, if I was concerned about playing the game itself over trying it, I would just simply do so without messing around with Linux, of any kind. Instead, I am enjoying the process and re-familiarization of the OS and it's basics.

Do you have an existing installation of Windows 10 at the moment?

Not one that I'm willing to add a Microsoft account to just so i can immediately remove it again just so I can see if there's an option to do so, if there's someone with the account willing to check.

100$ per year instead of 10$ for lifetime. No thanks !

You can't do it from Control Panel?

Welp, all previous attempts to install Home on the existing computer ended with a local account option. On the same computer, this time, I had to have the network connected and it said I needed to use the MS Account, which I do not find a big deal. (This is the home edition, after all.) Disconnected from the network, started over, offline account (Limited something something) was available.

I used my MS account, clearly can keep all my files locally stored and it is far more secure with a account, password and pin over no password at all. I created a local account, deleted my MS Account from the computer and it worked fine there as well. If you want to use a local account out of the box, just use Pro, simple as that. (No, you do not have to select domain connected in order to do so.)

Anyone who complains that they cannot create a local account on their Home Edition computer but does not bat an eye from the requirements on the phone they use everyday, I have no sympathy at all. And before someone claims that I am doing some stupid straw man argument, I do not give two whatever's, since you all have no issues with using your phone (Tracking Device), you do not get to whine about the Home edition of Windows needed a MS Account to login. (No, you do not need to be online after that, at all, to use the computer or login.)
