The Outer Worlds (New Obsidian RPG)

The Outer Worlds review - RPG comfort food that never stretches the imagination

A conventional, easygoing scifi RPG with slightly wasted satirical elements that fades very quickly from the mind

I don't hate The Outer Worlds...I guess what I hate about it is that it's sufficiently unhateful that you can spend 30 hours playing it without noticing...It's solidly-made enough that you keep hanging around in the hope of something more, like a layer of catchy percussion that never quite escalates into a song...

Am I the only one who doesn't care anymore what the mainstream says about a game? If anything if they diss a game it makes me more interested.

I don't care about the launcher. I care about hypocrisy and bad faith towards consumers. So speak for yourself, if a game is only on epic I won't buy it, no matter how good it is.

You know it is on other platforms that aren't Epic? So, if you dont care about launchers, and its not Epic Game Store. Then there should be no reason to pass up playing the game!

When it comes to launchers the MS Store is probably the worst out there right now. And was for a very long time. Despite that I already have the game preloaded, at least I hope, you can never know with the ms store. I had to DL Gears 5 3 times before it worked.

I've never run into that problem myself, but I do think they're slowly improving stuff on the back end as time goes by. The Xbox app at least seems to be steadily improving, but they really need to fix the problem of Win10 apps refusing to work through VPNs (even when the VPN is turned off and the app is simply sitting idle).

I have 3-4 sites that I trust and like to read their reviews...I'm getting Outer Worlds through Game Pass PC so it doesn't affect whether I'm going to buy this or not but I generally like certain sites/reviews that mostly match up with my own opinions on games

I no longer care about reviews anymore because there is no one else like me in this planet. Therefore I am the only one that will know if I will like a game, movie, show, etc or not like said stuff.
Anyways, I signed up for that Xbox game pass thing and I’m ready to play!

Pretty much this.

I can read better reviews and pick out the points that would matter to me and formulate my own opinion.

Been saying this for years.. There is no better reviewer for you... Other then you... Hope you enjoy the game man.

Just a heads up that this game isn't Play Anywhere, for anyone who cares. Just found out about it. Weird...

Reviews are tough. Most reviewers feel like everything has to be hyperbolic thanks to clicks being so important. Either GOTY or the worst game of all time.
Either that or the "review" is an hour long rant or love letter by some self-described fan of the genre.
I find myself scanning lots of reviews for specific gripes and likes that I know will affect my enjoyment. Even that can be tough, though.

I don't understand people who say they don't care about reviews...makes no sense...so you just buy every single game?...sounds more like people already have their minds that they are going to get a game and don't want to hear anything negative about it...same people who like every game

I can understand buying certain games no matter what anyone says from a favorite developer (for me it's From Software) but to not care about reviews for every game makes zero sense...problem nowadays online is that if a game is not a 10/10 people say it sucks...a 7 or 8 is considered a bad game...there are various degrees in between a 10 and a 0

plus there are cost considerations...not every game is worth paying full price for

personally reviews are trash, i usually just wait til i see people post play through video's and decide whether or not the game looks interesting to me.

I can’t stand play through videos, worse than any written review imho. It pains me to see just how bad most modern gamers are at playing something. Meta critic style aggregates are more useful.

At least in a written review I can apply critical thinking and parse out the useful knowledge from the rot and come to a conclusion within minutes without watching someone butcher playing a game.

Just because I don’t care about reviews doesn’t mean that I buy every single game out there. You missed the point where I said that I know what I like. I look at trailers, pics, maybe some gameplay vids and if it tickles my fancy, I will add it to my wishlist. I have a backlog to get through, so I can wait for sales unless it’s a game that I’ve been waiting on. Just because some reviewer site that is “trusted” gives a good review, it still doesn’t mean that it’s a good game or that I will like it. Unless the game companies cloned me, and my clone is the one writing the review, no one but me knows if I will like a game. Again, I am speaking for only me, not you or anyone else.

Reviews reveal what the game is about in a general sober form of engagement of the game. So what one person sees in a game another person with more information on game design might see something totally different.
Most game reviewers are so saturated with reviewing games nothing does it for them anymore.

Not caring about reviews doesn't mean I buy every game, it means I make up my mind based on facts, and not the biases of someone else. Reviews are inherently biased and I don't know the biases of the person reviewing.

Member the time when companies used to release demos? That should be the norm. Nowadays alphas and betas somewhat replaced demos, but not every game has a public beta.

That's exactly why I don't care about reviews, because they aren't honest. They don't contain the truth, they contain what people want to hear, be that negative or positive. "Influencers" decide to hype or diss a game, then suddenly all reviews echo the same.

I think basing buying decisions on someone else's opinion is like having someone else taste your food to decide whether you're going to like it or not.

Somewhat disappointed the game isn’t more open world. I’ll still enjoy though. I’ve got my trial period of the game pass until December so I’ve paid nothing to play this as it is.

I picked it up to support the Devs. The game appears to be a lot more open than a lot of games out there. I suspect that if it does well, there may be expansions. Until I am in game and trying to break shit, I will hold back any of my criticism. I really don't know until I know.

I’ll buy it if it appears to be open enough and I’m still playing near the end of the game pass trial.

from what I have been reading, it sounds like it is more open than FO4 and New Vegas? Of course we wont know for sure until people play the game and report back. a little over 6 hours to go!

Unless I'm missing something the Game Pass list for The Outer Worlds only lista Xbox and not PC...

The way the game pass loads games into a secret directory really bugs the fuck out of me.
Anyway, its launch time is apparently 4pm for the game pass and I have the night off, so I'm gonna give it a try then.

My biggest remaining issue with the Windows Store is how it handles the install for pre-orders before pre-loads are allowed.

If you 'pre-order' it'll just auto-install to whatever the first drive letter is with free space, and you can't change the location after the fact unless you un-install and re-install.

I don't buy games through the windows store, but I was able to select location with the Game Pass.

Thumbs up to people sticking to their guns on this regarding steam. If the only options are MS store and epic and you are not a fan of those platforms, then don't support them. I'm in the camp that hates all these launchers. If the epic launcher could actually compete on features this was be easy and I'd actually appreciate the competition. If it was on GOG or steam i'd be in day 1.

Windows Store subscription is literally a buck a month atm, so your just kicking yourself in the nuts to support Steam imho. I'm sure Gabe's happy.
