Who else annoyed with Apple obsoleting your device?

I have an iPhone 6 plus with 64gb I got new in 2014. Works perfectly fine, only has a few minor dings on the body and no scratches on the glass. And now Apple no longer wants to update it forcing me to count the days until one of my apps do not work on it. I will probably be getting an 11 soon just to have to count another 4-5 years.

That's better than any other Android phone, so you don't have much room to complain IMO. Esp. considering you can still get at least another year or two out of the phone before apps will be incompatible with your version of iOS. I wouldn't worry about it until you actually see it happen and then start looking for a replacement phone.

Yeah I think I might be able to hold out until iPhone 12. I use apps from different vendors for my business, so here is to hoping they slack with their updates. I am particularly annoyed because even a few years ago I had a buddy with an old late 2000s iMac no longer getting updates. We upgraded it from 2gb to 8, and I created a bootup disc with a patcher to make the then current OS think it was a new Mac. With 8gb of ram, it runs perfectly fine, and I am sure he can hold on to it for another 3-5 years. I mean all it is used for is browsing, email, and looking at cat pics...all the typical things commoners do.

One thing I can give Apple some respect for us that they do support their products longer then their counter parts. Most Android phones lucky to get 2 years support. Hell Google only officially claims 3 for pixel phones but I believe the original pixel still gets updated. Samsung really needs to get better at it since they suppose to be like the flagship Android phone maker and they are probably one of the worst.

Meanwhile android users get a max of 2 years of official support generally and sometimes are abandoned even sooner.

Ideally all of the phone makers should be supporting their devices with upgrades and security patches as long as they are functionally able to handle them, but that isn't reality.

Apple is better than anyone else in the industry in this regard. Having full support for 6 years post launch is very good by modern standards, so complaining seeems silly.

Now, ideally, since phones and tablets are really just small power efficient computers with touch screens, what we all should be demanding is that they move to the desktop OS model, where the hardware OEM's are only required to provide drivers, and once they exist, the same OS runs fine on ANY device, provided it has high enough specs.

We need to get away from all this vendor specific OS customization that makes security and other updates so fragmented.

I think I appreciate Apple a little more now. I thought Google would be a friendlier turf! I never had an Android. I jumped from Blackberry to Apple in the early 2010s.

I'm no iPhone fan, but will admit Apple supports their phones very well, for like 4 to 5 years worth of constant updates. Best you get from Google is 3 years, and worse from other manufactures.

The other way to think of it is the price. Apple doesn't have anything with 5-6 years of support that costs less than $699 (11) right now or $599 with 4-5 years of support (Xr). I got a brand new Pixel 3a for $249 after a trade in with 3 years of updates. In 3 years, the battery on either phone will probably be shot.

Price has nothing to do with it. Samsung phones are $800+ for their flagship phones and have shit for support. O doubt their $2000 Galaxy fold will even get updates after 2 years. While also being 6-12 months on Android OS upgrades late.

My S7 received an update a couple of days ago. That means 3+ years of support thus far. Seems reasonable to me, then again I'm not a phone guy, so I could be missing something.

Was that a security update? If so, that'd be consistent with Samsung's approach. Still not great, but consistent. It's just that you're likely months away from never getting an update (security or otherwise) again.

They still support their phone devices longer than any other company. Their Macs on the other hand ...

They must of gotten better since I had a S5. Updates were few and far between.

Samsung is notorious for having updates arrive very late after the initial release from google. So much so that I stopped buying their phones. I know the carriers are also partially responsible but still.

Yeah, I expect to see security updates AT LEAST monthly.

I don't give a rats ass about feature or Android revision updates.

With Pixels I get both though.

My niece has a iPad mini 2 that Apple is just now ending support on. I plan on buying her a new iPad for her Christmas present. Also planning on getting a new iPad for my mother who’s on the air 1. Both iPads still work great but just now after 6 years stopped getting updates. They are going to be amazed when they get the new 11” iPad pros I’m giving them.

Apple owns the platform end-to-end. Their support should be nothing less than phenomenal. But, I'd argue that it isn't, so they still have some work to do, especially since, unlike Android, they have no excuses.

Such a hard discussion...

Personally I had an iPhone 6 for a work phone. The battery was very unreliable in the last year I used the phone, cold or even cool weather made the battery pretty much shut down while in my pocket.... The phone pretty much had to live on a battery pack while I was on call to make sure it didn't randomly shut down...

Also, tasks like opening a simple e-mail would take 30-45 seconds quite frequently....

I finally got an iPhone XR to replace this phone and it was unbelievably better... The difference cannot be understated, just how much better it was to use, even for that basic task of e-mail and work related communication...

So for me, the iPhone 6 was truly end of life both functionally and from a software update point of view. I'm not sure how outraged I am that Apple didn't continue to support the device after iOS 12...

Having said that, my Aunt and Uncle were outraged when they found out they weren't getting iOS 13 and eventually wouldn't be getting security updates and apps would eventually stop being compatible... I have a sneaky suspicion that they bought their phones for a heavy discount multiple years after release from a carrier, so to them, this phone isn't THAT old compared to someone who has been using it since release. They indicated they aren't having any battery issues...

For me on a personal phone side of things, I basically buy a new Android phone every year (the last 3 or 4 years has been Google Pixel devices) and prior to Google Pixel, I was using Samsung devices that were lucky to get a couple updates per year and then nothing much past 2 years... What Apple is providing is amazing compared to what you see in the Android world...

Don't mean to be disrespectful but OP what do you expect? You get five years of updates, no other phone manufacturer out there comes even close to that. The best you see on the Android side is the Pixel lineup, even with that you only get three years.

At some point and time those updates become to much for see phones to handle. Much more complex instructions/features etc. will start to take their toll on an old CPU.

If you break down the cost of having an iPhone for 5 years on per day scale, you'd be surprised at how much value you got out of the phone and would be thanking Apple for choosing to support a 5 year old phone and getting your money's worth out of it. There are only a handful of Android phone makers that can reliably get you consistent updates within a two year window, let alone wanting to support a phone for 5 years.

Granted I will probably never have a phone for more than three years, and if I did I'd most likely be using an iPhone instead of a Pixel 4 to type this post up. Suffice to say Apple is industry leading when it comes to updating the iPhone.

I'm not sure I'd be that mad over Apple phasing out support for the iPhone 6. Five years of OS feature and security updates is pretty good, even if your particular phone was dying toward the end of it (my folks are about to upgrade from the iPhone 6 and don't seem to have major battery/speed complaints).

And while your aunt and uncle likely bought their phones later, the sad thing is that it's still better than what you typically see with Android, where you'll buy the year-old phone and still get reduced support. It's wild to think that you can still buy a new Galaxy S9, a device that was a flagship just a year ago, and have just several months of OS feature updates left before Samsung kicks you to the curb.

Lmao another 'Apple did something I don't like but I'll buy their latest product'.
You can't all be bots so is it just battered wife syndrome?

I got 6+ years of app support on an sgs2.. It depends on what Android version you can (be bothered to) run.

Samsung users had phones that literally started fires and downed airplanes and then continued to buy Samsung devices. That is not even including the things that happen year after year as is being discussed in this thread: which is Samsung charging Apple level flagship prices and supporting their devices more or less not at all (in reality I'd say you're lucky if you get a year). I would say there is little room to speak.

Yeah dropping support for a phone from 5 years ago isn’t exactly a terrible thing. The 6 has 1GB of RAM, it was clear that it would eventually be too little.

You're... really not in a position to talk as an Android user.

Apple offers roughly five years of official OS update support; app support lasts a couple of years longer (I believe the current minimum App Store target is iOS 10). If iPhone owners are masochists, what does that make you when Android offers two years of OS feature updates (three years for security updates) at best? The OP is grousing about Apple's update situation because they don't realize that it's much, much worse on the Android side.

LOLOLOL This post made my day. I'm glad you got app support on your galaxy s2. I know for a fact you stopped getting OS updates and security patches long before that. The 7 year old iPhone 5s got OS support for the last 7, it will continue to get security updates, and will have "app support" until the next major revision to IOS comes out, which in the past has been about 4 years. But yeah why listen to me.. I'm just a bot with battered wife syndrome.

Edit - Oh look.. Apple just released iOS 12.4.3 for the iPhone 5s today.

This a troll or something?

Yeah he made a similar troll post in the original iPhone 11 thread. Nothing of substance to contribute to the discussion. Just posts to ruffle some feathers.

Pretty sure this thread didn’t go as OP thought either.

What update is that and what carrier are you using? I have an S7 and last update was August.

While I understand that hardware being unsupported is downright wasteful, as the hardware really has not given up the proverbial goose, its unfortunately a thing. Apple, just like any other smartphone company wants you to upgrade and buy their new products, rather then you use older devices.

That being said, regardless of which ecosystem you are on, Apple's software longevity has really been a plus point, something android has struggled with in its ecosystem (pixel lineup is the only one that comes close). Android does have very active aftermarket in which it allows a user of an obsolete device to implement other ROMs, etc, but their come a whole line of device limitations (samsung and att being one of the worst) and of course its not baked in directly from say the mfg.

To those with the 6 updates, I believe its no longer supported pass v12.x.x

In regards to android, they are working on promising longer updates, and their first step is unifying the 3 OS cycle, all devices from 2020 launch with 10, and in the future separating feature updates and security updates directly available from the playstore. How that plays out is anyone guess, as too many cooks in the kitchen.

My 5c still runs but it's on its last legs. Home button is glitchy and battery is almost useless. I know it doesn't get security updates but it's rarely used and serves as an emergency phone, alarm clock, and nightstand youtube screen. I'm planning on getting the SE replacement in Mar '20 so I can use the smartphone for what is was designed for.....high resolution photos of my food, selfies of me eating my food, social media updates while evacuating said food, and ofc, candy crush saga. /s

Be glad your not on Android 6...bugs galore due to app incompatibilities. Can't see your status bar in all apps without using a third party notification bar app, etc.

Oh man. I hope they don’t drop support for the 7s anytime soon. I just added my parents to my plan and got them each a 7s bc it was free. I was going to do the 8s (should have) but it was $10 a month per phone. My pops came from a 6s and does nothing other than watch YouTube or Dazn. My mother came from a flip phone, so a 7s was way more than she needed. All she does is watch YouTube on it now.

They better last two more years so I can try to get another free upgrade, or cheap at least.

If your parents have no use for new bells and whistles then it doesn’t matter if they fall into the unsupported category. Apple still releases security updates for older phone.

They'll be good for at least another year in terms of major updates, and I imagine they'll get minor releases right up until iOS 15 (conveniently, two years from now).

This. The iPhone 7 came out in 2016 so you can’t expect too much more support, but I’d expect to get at least another year at the least for major IOS updates. After that they will still get security updates, which honestly isn’t as bad as it sounds since IOS changes very little between major versions. I’d be willing to bet that they might not even update their phones much less care what comes in the updates anyways.
