That’s because while the machine was patrolling the mean streets, it was actually confronted with a real-life crime when a fight broke out. A witness to the fracas ran to the robot cop and hit the emergency button, expecting the robot to call the copshop and get some officers out there.Unfortunately, s**t went downhill pretty quickly. RoboCop just told the woman, Cogo Guebara, to get out of the way so it could continue patrolling the streets. “I was pushing the button but it said, ‘step out of the way,’” Guebara told NBC News. “It just kept ringing and ringing, and I kept pushing and pushing.”

Eventually, another witness called the cops on his phone. By the time, the action was done, people were being loaded into ambulances and RoboCop was wandering around telling people to keep the park clean.Turns out that it’s not actually had its communications system connected to the emergency line yet. Yeah, nah, any calls it makes just go back to Knightscope, the company who leases the robots to the police.

to be fair they were probably worried if they did connect it to a direct 911 system people would just spam click the button for the lulz. either way seems dumb anyways.

Humm. Emergency button only calls the company. Company apparently NOT monitoring its experimental Police robot on its first few rounds. Otherwise it should have only taken a few extra moments for the company monitor to call 911 for the robot. Seems like at least a double fail. False advertising that the panic button was actually working. Lousy support from the company supplying the robot.

I wonder how many millions were wasted on this project, should've used the money to put up cameras.

And then hired a shit ton more people and pay them (plus gov benefits) to watch said cameras? Yeah I think a robot was still probably cheaper... if not now then in the long-run.

That or hire more officers or both! People arent going to take r2d2s big ugly cousin seriously. How is it supposed to defend itself from say, a couple of ten year olds with wiffle ball bats? Yell at them? Police academy robocop haha

But it doesn't work. It doesn't have to be an officer it can be a 10$ an hour security employee. The reality is most crimes are over before the cops arrive. Record video, if there's a crime play back time index, stream it to the cop car and track down the perps. This was a waste of money.

that... was actually much more benign than I expected. the headline had me anticipating a more ED-209 type scenario

"John Spartan you've been fined 5 credits for violating the verbal morality statute, emitting too much CO2 and for wearing fur."

To be fair, it's about on par with the officiating demonstrated at the Packers - Lions game tonight (and I'm a Packers fan) - that shit was embarrassing.

Another incredible waste of tax payer's dollars. I can only imagine how expensive this program costs, and how little it provides back to society.

They should build in a trash bin on the robot so it can actually be useful to park goers who can just dump garbage in it.

That seems the trend with most projects funded by taxpayer dollars.

Meh ... after having to live through the fail Mary and the multiple roughing the passer calls against Matthews last year .... I would say we were due.

This

says the company that produced these plan to rent them out as a service for less than minimum wage.

We have the exact same setup in our office. The ladies all have panic buttons (I don't, so I guess I'm expendable?) on their desks. It was hit once before by one of their kids. Two hours later a call center three hours away called the wrong office asking if everything is alright.

Ya. Tell me these aren't gov't operations.

Well that seems safer than having rookie police show up and shoot the person they are supposed to be checking on.

If they arm these things, who does the community get mad at when roomba cop shoots an unarmed juvenile for brandishing a bag of skittles?

Governments better be careful here, if armed roomba cops start shooting people then the NPC populace might have to get mad at the unelected "conflicted interest" bureaucrats instead of the white male boogeyman.... talk about blown NPC circuit boards!

If the robots were powered by human excrement, they might still be worthwhile

"Cops don't like me, so I don't like Cops. NA-NA-NA-NA-NA..........".

You said you're working in a... basement, or something. Why would they need panic buttons?

Not quite a basement, just a room with no windows.

Its a gov't facility accessible to the public and we do deal with some questionable people.
