Maybe I am just old, but I don't quite understand this season event thing in Fortnite.

Back when I played multiplayer online games, you just logged on whenever you wanted and played with others.

Apparently this morning, a team event named "The End" ended with a black hole explosion consuming the Fortnite map, and taking the game offline?

I'm chuckling to myself how frustrating this must be for all the tween Fortnite addicts who want to play.

"It also appears that Fortnite: Save the World -- the non-battle-royale mode where players survive against waves of enemies -- is no longer available for purchase on various platforms. There's speculation that Epic will make this mode available for free instead of the $39.99.

Wasn't that the original plan when the game came out last year? I kinda remember they said you could buy it then and play right away or it'd be F2P eventually.

Well you did experience competitive season playing ? Like CAL league in CS ? It's basically the same, you get rewards and ranking... and once in a while it restarts.
Pretty much the same scenario in about anything competitive... doesn't mean you need to be competitive.

Although Fortnite is another thing... since it was so much built around psychology and removed pretty much all the pain of "losing" or ranking bad while hyping the need to get a good "pull" (gambling), it's really a strange way to put seasons... from what I recall (played a few hours now and then), it looks like the debut of new cosmetics...
From the little I played, I have to agree they did their best to make it addictive as much as drugs... it's pretty crazy, I almost forgot to drink my whiskey and do my lines while playing it. Jokes aside, this game should be banned and the legal action against them needs to gain ground.

I like Fortnite. Been playing since Season 3 and have always enjoyed it... I'm also 47 years old which makes me in the extreme minority. I never have understood tho why the game gets so much hate. It's free to play with no strings attached, it's extremely well made and maintained, they seem to listen to player criticisms and are constantly changing things, they frequently update and try to keep the game fresh.

That's what these season "events" are all about, stirring up some buzz and excitement, trying to keep things fresh. If it's just the same old map and the same old game forever, it would end up like most other multi-player games with a fraction of the player base.

But I've read tons of comments on other sites reporting about this and its just "good the game sucks I hope it dies and burns in hell" post after post. I just don't get it.

Luke I said, I've been playing for a couple years now and each season re-piques my interest and this one is no different... I'm at work now frequently checking to see if it's back up or not.

Thank you.

I showed this to my 12 year old. Told him Tesla bought Fortnite and closed it down.

He went around for a good hour damning Tesla and everyone who ever bought one... until his friends finally told him it wasn't real.

Was a ~great~ hour.

A big part of it is because its primary profit center is preying on little kids and extracting billions in microtransactions.

LOL it's not "preying" on anybody. It's a FREE game! You can play the game 16 hours a day 7 days a week, never spend a dime and miss absolutely nothing.

And the poor little kids can't spend any money without their parents letting them use their credit cards so again, don't see how that's "preying" on anybody.

Thats exactly what I'm talking about. It's a 100% free game but somehow it's "preying on children" and sucks because it has "micro transactions" that are strictly cosmetic, completely voluntary and provide zero competitive benefit. I just don't get it.

I wish it was that simple, but the kids don't understand that. They watch others playing and how "cool" it is to have this or that and feel the pressure just like real life to have the latest whatever.
My daughter is always asking for Roblox Robucks? I havn't given in yet, but I just don't see the need. Play the free game and enjoy.

You have kids?

That's far from "preying" on kids imo.

Fortnite supplies millions of kids hundreds of hours of completely free entertainment.

The gameplay loop in shit like Fortnite is tuned and tweaked by sponsored research to maximize engagement and investment. There's not much of a game left anymore (expect that played by the corporations pushing this junk), it's all over-optimized to extract as much money as possible while keeping a person hooked as long as possible.
Those most susceptible to this, like children, are the target demographic because they are most vulnerable. This just gets exacerbated by shit like social pressure in school where "Fortnite item ownership" becomes a platform for bullying.

your logic is sound but out of context and what is actually happening in reality, therefore we should re visit the logic and see what we missed. this game is literally raising a few kids that i know. the credit card gets saved, and terrible parents get to use this game as daycare from after school until bedtime. you might not think that is a problem though, but im not looking forward to interacting with more autistic morons in the future.

i dont know what to do though, the loot boxes should probably count as gambling and get removed? that might curb the addiction. not sure. cant do anything about parenting though, and its not my business ultimately.

Fortnite doesn't even have loot boxes. This is another case of people freaking out about something because they have absolutely no idea what it is.

why do you lie? does it make you feel good? lootboxes were just removed earlier this year, in reaction to the 2018 belgium ban-

the only thing i can apologize for is not being constantly up to date on this childrens game.

The loot boxes in the save the world game that no one plays and is completely separate from the other game? Because that isn't even what you were talking about.

It may not have loot boxes, but it was still designed with the aid of psychologists to make it as addictive as possible.

A well adjusted adult can deal with this, but kids struggle, especially those kids who don't have determined parents.

This is why the game gets so much hate. It's targeted at young kids, and it has been optimized by psychologists to be as addictive as possible.

The constant fights over Fortnite time can be utterly exhausting to even dedicated parents. Ask me how I know,

Video games don’t prey on kids any more than Herseys, Kellogg’s, or Hasbro does.

Marketing is marketing. It’s not intended to be a replacement for parenting.

If your kid can’t control themselves from buying skins or whatever, it’s not that your kid can’t control themselves, it’s that the parent allowed them to do so and left their credit card on the account

Not saying Fortnite, or video games in general, aren’t a pain to parent around - they absolutely are. But taking those away doesn’t solve any problems, it just will shift it to the next available resource - toys or comics or Happy Meals or whatever. Kids will just be kids.

yeah lootboxes, cosmetics, whatever is splitting hairs.

True, but at the same time it is pretty sad when you have 12 year olds that are morbidly obese and already have diabetes, hypertension, etc.... Herseys, Kellogg’s, or Hasbro preying on kids is also bad.

I'm guessing they just needed a way to shutdown the infrastructure to prepare for an upgrade. There's no way they'd kill a revenue stream like this just for funsies.

No, I want to ban micro transactions and any other in game purchases.
They ruined game play for me and have caused another generation to not even understand the draw of the game, only the draw of "oh, what else can I buy"

Then don't play the game. There are millions of people that haven't spent any money at all and enjoy it. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean no one does.

Quit forcing your opinion of fun on to everyone else. You're just being an asshole.

Hello sharknice,

Thank you for your support. $2 has been deposited into you account.

warm regards,

Evil Epic hired psychologists to help them design a game that would let them prey on kids because they hate children. Sorry, that is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

What kills me is that somebody says video games are to blame for mass shootings, we storm the streets with torches and pitchforks. But let them say Fortnite is using psychological tricks to secretly addict and prey on children and that's ok?

What about the games in your Steam library that you've logged hundreds and hundreds of hours on? Did those developers use psychologists to make you addicted?

And if it was so easy to just hire a psychologist and make a video game so addictive it would gain 250 million players and earn the developers billions of dollars, why has nobody else done it? You really think EA, the worst company in the world wouldn't have cashed in on that yet?

It's easy to buy in to that logic when it's a game you hate but apply it to one you love and you'll realize how silly it actually is.

The game got super popular and trendy with kids. It'll last a few years like all trends do then fade away. In a year or two when nobody's playing it much anymore and those same "addicted" kids have moved on to other things, it'll be easier to see how ridiculous this Fortnite hate and lawsuits really are.

This may come as a shock, but yes, EA and other large and small publishers are less interested in creating a game and more interested in engagement and optimizing money-grubbing.
Optimizing for sucking vulnerable people dry is disgusting and unethical. What makes you so passionate about defending a shit practice by shit corporations?
