I'm having a very strange issue, A week ago my bran new 8TB WD HDD started doing the click of death, it quickly locked up my computer and I had to pull the drive to get it to boot again, I threw a backup drive in its place and surmised my new 8TB was a lemon and needed to go back to WD.
Today I had my main steam HDD 2TB WD go to 100% utilization causing the computer to lock up when accessing said drive, it was clicking just slightly, so i pulled it thinking the old girl just gone bad but I wanted to try and see if i could format it maybe save it, the thing is after plugging it back in steam booted up on reboot, the drive was there no issue, not a single SMART code error when i opened crystal disk info.
So i turned it off again swapped the SATA cables from the Steam HDD and the Spare HDD i threw in when my 8TB was pulled out, thinking if this happens again A it was hooked up to a different SATA port and B its using a different cable, so I'm thinking if i have a issue now it would be on the Spare drive if it is a cable/port issue or the drive will just fail again and its the drive.
so about 2 hours pass and the Steam Drive is at 100% utilization again, this time i can enter the drive directory but steam is completely locked up, it does not take to long before the desktop is frozen as well (mouse still worked and some windows/TM but that was about it) so I figured the steam drive is done, pull it out and try and reboot but its stuck in the windows loading screen and i hear it, a HDD is clicking and i only have one left installed, the Spare drive is now doing it.
is I shut this shit show down, unplugged all my SATA Drives 2x 1TB SSD's the 2TB STEAM and the 3TB Spare, hook the HDD's up to the SSD's power and SATA and vice versa, I'm now back in windows, everything is 100% stable, no SMART errors what so ever.
This is very perplexing So it's either some how all 3 HDD I have (The 8TB, 2TB and 3TB) have failed one after another, or there is a serious issue with the SATA controller on my MOBD or for a 3rd option is it possible a bad power rail could case this issue, I moved the SSD's on to the HDD power connector they shard and did the same to the HDD with the SDD power.
Ether way im at a loss, I now worried i sent off a perfectly good HHD to WD for a RMA when it was not the drive that failed but something else
