OLED 4K 30" 60 Hz - Dell UP3017Q

Thanks for the heads up insoc123, I am still leaning towards picking this up from that 3rd party seller on amazon. In regards to the flicker free option, if you turn it OFF it removes the double image, correct? Is that better for gaming and then turning flicker free ON for non-gaming desktop work? I remember people posting on here that 60hz flicker looked really bad, but i remember back in the old CRT days I used a CRT at 60hz for years and never noticed any flicker. Maybe how noticeable it is varies by user?

Also, I was looking at the Samsung CHG70 as well. How do you like it? I was thinking of getting it but the initial review i saw on youtube said it had a number of problems. HDR not working, limited number of backlight zones and limited freesync range. Thanks.

I'm also and "old" gamer, playing on CRT TVs since the 80's with my Commodore VIC 20 and Commodore 64 and the flicker in those days didn't affect me at all. When I choose the no flicker option in my OLED monitor the flicker don't bother me at all when playing, it's just that something "psychological " prevents me to playing that way because I think I'm doing something wrong for my eyes and that in the long time will affect me. Silly I know....

FWIW unless you have some kind of underlying condition, light flicker in the region of 90 hz and above shouldn't cause any issues. Neither blue light, unless your monitor is emitting UV rays at you. It does affect your sleep cycle, but getting some sun during the day will more than offset that unless you have your monitor set to very harsh and excessive brightness and are in the habit of staring at blue screens.

Yes, even 75hz would be acceptable but these OLED monitor goes to just 60hz.

So these popped back up on Dell outlet for $2699 plus a 15% off code. I guess no one has one anywhere, and they can't be found on eBay at all, so fuck it ill grab one since I was never able to last year, and just had to return the Acer x27 4k as its way too small for me at 27": (

Careful dude. Input lag is higher than LG's OLED TV's from what I remember reading..

any guess on how many of these Dell actually made? it had to be less than.... 4000-5000 monitors ? You could never find any on eBay and it was never reviewed by major web sites...

Oh I think it was WAY lower than that. I'm thinking a few hundred or less based off of how few people had them on the forums, and the lack of general information online, videos and ebay ads. I've never seen one listed on Ebay or on forums. Two places these displays would basically ever sell at. IMO this was a small experiment by Dell to test the waters.

Such a shame these didn't took off.... 27-32" 1080p-4k oled monitors is all we want. I don't even care about hz. 60 is fine... red dead redemption 2 would look so good on 4k oled compared to my ips

Well Dell cancelled my order for some reason. No email, no nothing. I just log on to check order status and says cancelled.

Damn. I guess that's good news for me if I ever want to unload this monitor on eBay. Sounds like I would get more than what I paid for it lol.

Why oh why did they not give this display 4k120hz MST capabilities.

I remember owning it for one day, boxed it right back up and sent back.
I figured surely they will do a refresh of it once DP 1.4 comes out and give us a proper 120hz version.

NOPE.

WTF Dell Engineers, Corporate Suits & Marketeers not even once!

I kinda want one but they don't ship to Canada and doing the forwarding shipping dance is effort, plus some owners of these have reported issues and the answer is typically 'well we have no replacement panels so uh here's a dumb LCD replacement or nothing.' Also yeah, 60hz. If it was 120hz I would probably have bought one when they released.

was it because of the 60hz?

I have to imagine the ppi+glossy+blacks make the picture quality fantastic ?

This thing looks gorgeous, but I can see flicker using web sites FML

Make sure the setting "flicker free" is set to on. That will make it double strobe at 120 Hz. You shouldn't see the flicker then.

Even then still see some what of a flicker on black backgrounds (feels like PWM)

Gaming feels fine, web use flickers. FML this thing is near perfect otherwise

On a black background? PWM/strobing is almost always the most noticeable on white.

I don't think OLED would be good for a computer monitor. Better make those screensavers pop up quick.

I'm not sure i agree with that assessment. I think HDR "affect" has more to do with with the greater pixel density of higher resolution than the panel type.

No, OLED has higher dynamic range color and infinite contrast. SO even when OLEDs have a max brightness of around 800nits, they even brighter and the colors pop like HDR.

HDR has ZERO to do with pixel density or resolution.

It's about dynamic range, Darkest black to brightest white.

The Super Brightness aspect is something all the LCD makers have been marketing the shit out of, because it is the ONLY thing LCD does better than OLED. They are succeeding in convincing some people than now they need 1000 nits displays.

Personally I don't really want my TV or Monitor to blind me. My next TV will be OLED.

Monitors, well, too expensive and Burn In is likely still something you have to be careful of.

I have the 65" LG OLED I got last year. It's plenty bright and the COLORS, omg. The blacks pixels are just off so they are black.

Sadly, we did not. :(

*Technically* the C9 meets the requirements, pending Firmware update to allow NVIDIA to output HDMI VRR on it's existing 2000 series cards. The limitation has been that no display manufacturer if producing OLED TVs at smaller then 55" at the moment, limiting OLED to TVs where VRR has been mostly MIA (pending HDMI 2.1 support). But 4k 120 HDR we've had since the C7 came out almost three years ago; VRRs been the sticking point.

Once HDMI 2.1 hits, then VRR becomes moot; *everything* HDMI 2.1 compliant will support HDMI VRR by default, making Gsync and Freesync OBE.

The samsung Q9fn and the c9 have supported freesync/VRR at 1080p and 1440p on amd gpus and xbox one for awhile now, somewhere around may 2018 - so there's no reason it can't be done at those resolutions on hdmi 2.0b. It's really not worth it to me at 60hz 4k even with VRR for a tiny range of hz variance and full smearing viewport sample and hold blur at 60fps.

The next gen of consoles will probably be hdmi 2.1 since they are touting 120hz gaming capability at their quasi 4k resolutions (most likely a performance vs static eyecandy choice in supported game's settings). That is unless they are running non native resolution more of the time to hit 120hz with more aggressive checkerboarding and dynamic rez 1440p etc. but I'm assuming they will have hdmi 2.1 and are rumored to have gpu power similar to a 2080. Someyear nvidia should finally release hdmi 2.1 gpus, hopefully with a die shrink. Until then (nvidia hdmi 2.1), for now I'd consider a hdmi 2.1 OLED TV for the living room to do media playback and ps4 gaming but not for my gaming pc's gaming monitor.

Btw - Products can list that things support hdmi 2.1 features without being true/full featured hdmi 2.1 so it muddies the waters. Similarly a lot of displays slap a HDR graphic on their products when they really aren't capable of true hdr.

Exactly. I responded to this thread because I’m going through it and considering buying this monitor even today. There just doesn’t seem to be anything on the horizon for 43” or smaller OLED, and that’s the absolute largest I can use as a monitor.

Where did you find this monitor for sale? I’m looking for one and couldn’t find even a used one!

There was one on EBay for $2800 a while back. Gone now. Though it’s somehow available for “pre-order” on Amazon. Probably some sort of mistake in their system.

after some more looking. I actually found one for sale.

Looking through the specs. It doesn’t support HDR so you’d need something like a HDfury box between that and your PC.
Speaking of which has anyone used one? That’s what is holding me back from getting one

This thing had issues, if you look on overclock.net you can probably find the thread where a couple of people bought one. I don't remember what the specific issues were anymore though. Some panel issues, and something to do with the weird 120hz panel refresh(not input, panel only) on this display.

Any long-term use updates/info/whatnot? I still google this monitor from time to time in hopes that someone will make a successor in the 27-32" market.

Ha! I still sometimes do searches for this monitor too. I think we are still away off from getting OLEDS in the ~30 size. At this rate I would take a 42inch 4k oled TV from LG and use that. 48inch is too big. But i think i could force myself to get used to a 42inch.

I have this monitor on my backup rig (X99) - got it first day in April 2017 (along with the Dell UP3218K 8K monitor) and still love it. It's sleek, beautiful, and OLED-mazing. Having used OLED for more than 3.5 years, I will never go back to non-OLED panels again.

I wish I would have pulled the trigger on this monitor during the short time it was available.... i wonder how many were finally sold. I keep hoping someone might put theirs up on Ebay. But i worry about the longevitiy of these monitors.

Ah I had my notifications turned off! Thanks so much for the reply.
OLED for sure, I went from iPhone 6s -> iPhone 12 Pro and the difference is amazing.
Like other revolutionary steps in technology, I won't want to go back to non-OLED screens (unless maybe microLED), spinning hard drives, etc.

The new Dell UP3221Q monitor caught my eye as well. Its got 2000 zone mini-led backlight with an IPS panel. I think that would be the only monitor that could come close to this OLED. Its $4,999 which is what the original price of this dell OLED was supposed to be. Very expensive but you wouldn't have to worry about burn-in or deal with the flicker/double situation that i read about when this OLED came out. The UP32221Q is also a 60hz monitor like the OLED. Would have been nice to have at least a 40-60 freesync range but whatever... A RTX 3080 should be able to do a locked 60fps at 4k for most games...
