So I am trying to reset a windows 10 Laptop for a friend. It was given to them by someone who hadn't used it in awhile and doesn't remember the login password. So generally to reset you go to the start menu and hold shift while you click on the reset option. Since we can't login tho, I was told via google that you do the same thing at the sign in screen. Hold shift while clicking the reset option. It Said there should be a power option at the bottom right of the sign screen, that you click on and gives you the option to reset, but I can find no such power option. Theres the Wifi Button, and the Ease of Access Button thats it. So I'm not sure what to do.

Just reformat. After the initial installation it will take you to a first boot dialog where it sets up your keyboard and lets you pick how much Microsoft can collect from you. Just leave it there and let your friend walk through that himself.

I was trying to do it this way cause I don't have a copy of Windows 10 to reinstall with. So if I reformat, then she will just have a blank HDD. There has to be some way to get into the Advanced Options/Troubleshooting Mode even tho the Power Option is missing from the Windows Login Screen.

Google “windows 10 media creation tool”. This will let you create media with a thumb drive. You’ll install windows after the format.

I already know how to do that. Thank you tho. (I know that my [H] title says noob, but I've actually been a member here since 2003. So I do know a thing or two lol)

My fault I should've mentioned this previously when I stated I had no blank DVDs, but somehow I no longer own a single flash drive lol. I guess with the Advent of cloud storage as well as just using my phone. I haven't had a need for one.

So basically I was just trying to find if there was a way to access the advanced options from the login screen without having the power button available, and reset windows that way. Since I don't have a way to make a bootable Disc or Drive. It's looking like that's not gonna be possible tho. So I'm gonna have to run to the store and get a cheap thumb drive.

Edit - sorry if my statement about not being a noob came out in a snobish or or rude way. That most definitely was not the intention. It was mostly cause it's been bothering me that I lost my "GAWD" title upon starting a new account.

Tell your friend to go buy a thumb drive. You're providing the labor and skills. Of course if you mean "friend" then spend the dang money and get the job done. Seriously, a person on [H] saying they don't have a single usb thumb drive ... now I've heard everything.

what happened to your other account. did you contact kyle?

if you try to boot and turn it off 2-3 time while windows is still loading it will com up with advanced boot options.

A 4gb thumb drive costs like 4 dollars. If that's the main obstacle, forget this job already.

So I ended up finding a USB Drive. I need help with flashing Windows 10 to a USB drive, and then getting the Laptop to boot from it. I tried once already, used rufus to format and flash windows 10 to the drive. When I booted up the Laptop, after having selected within the BIOS to have the Flash Drive at first boot device (BIOS gives to options for USB devices, USB HDD and USB Flash Drive. I selected Flash Drive of course), It didn't do anything. I then hit F10 to manually select what device to boot from, and for some reason, USB Drive isn't an option like it is in the BIOS. USB External HDD was tho. I tried that the 2nd time around, this time it booted to a PowerShell command Prompt. From which I couldn't achieve anything. None of the normal PowerShell/Command Prompt commands seemed to work. I don't know if this is an error with how I setup the flash drive or something else.

Don’t use Rufus. Just google “windows 10 media creation tool” and run that to create the bootable usb drive. That will get the correct ISO and format/burn it correctly.

yea thats what I'm doing now. It currently says it's downloading windows 10 and is at 79% completion. So I will post my results once I complete the process and attempt to install windows on the other Laptop.

So this time around, after using the Windows Media Creator Tool. I successfully created a bootable Windows 10 USB Flash Drive. Reformatted the HDD and setup my partitions, etc etc. Chose the 32bit/64bit version. Installation went off without a hitch. Once it rebooted the first time upon completion of said installation, I am now experiencing an issue. It made it to the Windows loading screen. Says "Getting Ready". Problem is, its been sitting at this screen for like over 15-20min. Then it finally reset itself, and then it just hung at the first Gateway Splash screen for like 10min or so. Only thing I could do is hit F2 to go to BIOS or F10 for boot Menu. I went to BIOS and realized it was still set to boot from USB Drive first, so I fixed that to boot from Main HDD first. Then save/exit, but did the same thing, just hung at the Gateway Splash Screen. So I went to boot menu this time. Manually selected Main HDD, and it finally went to the windows loading screen, and started the whole "Getting Ready" thing again. Now It's still just sitting at the Getting Ready screen.

I'm about to try to reinstall Windows 10. Unless anyone else can give me a better suggestion.

upon 3rd try, I still had to manually go into boot menu, and just hit esc to get it to go past the intro splash screen, but this time it didn't say getting ready. Just loaded up like normal, with the spinning dotted circle. Made it passed that to the Blue screen that says "Just A Moment". So were making progress it would seem lol

Been at the Just a Moment screen for about 5-6min now
