Agreed, but sometimes I just want to sit on the sofa & play with a controller - Rocket League, racing games, lego games w/ my son, etc.... There is a place for each IMHO.
I say this as someone with a 144hz G-sync IPS monitor, 1080Ti & i5-8400 as my "decent" gaming rig.
Glad they are shipping. They don't have much in the store. I went a few days ago for an SSD and ended up getting it at Best Buy. In an ironic turn of events, Best Buy was stocked well with "gamer" grade hardware, the stuff that I would want.
Sad to see another retailer looking like they're going to bite the bullet. It's amazing how many computer-centric retail stores no longer exist.

Dude, the 2 that I frequently go to in DFW look like ghost towns. The shelves are only about 30% stocked. The rest is just bare metal or storage for over stock. I'm a little scared at this point that they are going out of business (or going to close these stores)....because I don't see how any company could run a profitable operation like that.
Yet you go to Microcenter and they are flourishing. And the prices are very competitive. MC staff is a little short during peak hours, but the staff is very friendly. Fry's is like a bunch of fresh immigrants that don't give a shit about the particular subject matter (not a rip against immigrants, but I feel like they might be being exploited by Fry's).

It is pretty wild. Back in the 90's when computers were a niche there were several computer dedicated retailers. As computers have become more mainstream and accepted, the retail stores have dwindled to near nothingness. I live in Fort Worth and there is NO computer store. The only thing we have is Best Buy (which does have decent stuff as mentioned). I have to drive 30-50 miles towards Dallas to get a Fry's or Microcenter. There are 4 Fry's in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.....not one actually in Fort Worth though.

Yeah it's a bummer. I feel like Best Buy is also ultimately doomed too. In CA we had a ton of Egghead Software, CompUSA, Circuit City, the Good Guys....all gone now. I can be perfectly content just walking around and browsing in those types of stores and not buying anything. Can't get that feeling online.
There was one MicroCenter in Santa Clara that is now also gone, I miss that store a lot. Glad that the business is still solvent though, on the off chance I ever find myself near one again!

Best Buy is going no where. They are actually booming and their CEO turned the company around really well. It ultimately boils down to how the company is ran. Frys is in trouble because of shitty management. I used to work there. Fuckers never listened to feedback from employees. Not one survey. They should have slimmed downs a long time ago. The stores are too big and look empty because they don’t order as much and that is a negative.
Microcenter is fine as well. They did the right thing. They closed the location there likely because it was not worth it. May be it has to do with cost of retaining the location in the Bay Area. But most microcenters tend to be fairly busy.
Yes seems like best buy made a decent come back. They did shut one down near me tho. It probably was cause there was a bigger and better BB about 2 miles away that been their for decades. Never understood why they built the 2nd one so close. It didn't even last 5 years. MC around me is always packed when I go. Great store. Ever since most online places started charging sales tax it has been my go too place for computer parts.

Yea. I am sure they wanted shit load of rent when the lease expired after their lease option was exhausted and it was time to renew. Sometime it ain't worth it. Other than that I don't see Microcenter giving up bay area. I am unsure if they tried getting out of bay area may be towards concord area to be on the cheaper side like they are in Tustin, further outside of the LA market. I think that would have worked.

idk how places like SF and stuff have any kind of bushiness running. The rent is insane in those areas. Louise Rossmann been looking for a new place in NY and my mind is blown how much people want for rant for tiny shit holes. I couldn't imagine how much a space a microcenter needs would cost. it has to go over $100k a month.
It's not sustainable. You're completely right. Being a property owner in SF it's great right now but eventually things will implode. Unless you're grandfathered in when that lease expires you're screwed. Most of my favorite mom & pop stores are long gone replaced by chain stores/restaurants. So sad. Anyone "blue collar" won't be able to live anywhere close and it's only getting worse.

Unsure about sustainability. Eventually when recession hits we will see some shit happen. But from what i have seen people that live in Bay area are usually have a solid foundation and most jobs do sort of pay really well there. So its almost like older people are cashing out and new comers for now can live there just fine because they are making more. But there are those that are well retired and own their own property as well. I know of a few people that sold their houses around in pay area and mad solid profits. One guy bought a property for like 180k and sold it for 850k. Another sold 300k property for well over million and moved out.
