Is Star Citizen the new Dikatana and or Duke Nukem forever?

I'm just curious as to peoples opinions on this.

To be up front.

1. yes I backed when LTI was a thing and got a connie package.
2. I hope the game comes out and blows everyone away... but to be complete it will need what was promised back then when I backed.
a. A private hostable PU.
b. A PU and Squadron 42 game.
c. In excess of 100 systems.
d. Ability to map wormholes and have them named (within reason) as you see fit and tied to your account.

In reality I think we might get a SQ42 game. I don't think the PU will ever be user hostable.

I feel the same way about Camelot Unchained backed in 2013 it's 2019 and almost 2020 already and the game looks nothing like Dark Age of Camelot. I could of built Rome by then or part of it anyway or even a mock stone hedge.

Yeah I def saw that for what it was.

Same with SC.... Some of ya'll are some marks I swear.

if the final game turns out to be lame then yea... gamers can forgive if devs eventually deliver the goods, just look at NMS

DNF is in a category all its own. Star Citizen has a long way to catch up to that one and it's probably already further along than DNF was at this point. Well, at least not counting the 3-4 times they started over from scratch.
Not sure if there is a good comparison to SC. I mean, there's functional content there already.

I'm certain it will be; Chris Roberts is so focused on adding "realism", without recognizing that "realism" gets old quick. I fully expect SC to wither and die in *very* short order once it "releases"; it doesn't do anything gameplay wise that hasn't already been done before.

I backed the kickstarter, still haven't played the game, been waiting for full release. I wonder if I'll survive that long. It would have to be pretty bad to be anything like DNF though, I doubt it will be that bad.

It has long surpassed those two just the development so far has cost more then 100 million and still counting. Granted most that 100 million went to hookers and blow.

they'll release SC as a tech demo or as part of the new Futuremark benchmarking suite...so much $$ rolled in that they became too ambitions with their plans

Neither, Star Citizen is a perpetual hype platform. That will only exist as long as there are those still throwing money at them.
After the revenue stream dries they'll soon announce bankruptcy. But CR will be long out of the company by then.

As for SQ42 I'll continue under the assumption that it is vaporware until I see something playable.

And yes I backed the project in the original kickstarter (for over 150), and I want it, but I'm also a realist.

Daikatana and DNF were self funded by their developers, they didn't take any crowd funded money up front from their playerbase. And they both also eventually delivered a finalized product, without needless promises of expansions, DLCs or future content.

I have circled the Galaxy 4 times in Elite: Dangerous since it launched, so maybe after another 4 loops?

Its a damn shame, but a predictable one.

Its definitely the new Duke Nukem Forever. Will it be Daikatana bad? I don't think so. What's playable of Star Citizen is better than that already.

I don't know man. And to be clear I'm in for 275. So I want it to be great and blow me away and be all things to all people. But I have the sinking feeling it will be a hollow shell of what was promised that whistles with the wind through the void.

Of course it will, scope creep alone will insure this game is nothing more than a shell, even if you had a proper, experienced and respected developer like Rockstar or CDPR on it.

To be clear I never backed it, I wanted what they originally laid out, but the writing was on the wall pretty darn early that this project was going to die by scope creep (even before some of the more egregious money grabs and allegations).

Let's be honest, daikatana at least was a fully featured game. SC is still a tech test demo, with appalling amounts of placeholder and missing content. At the current rate I won't be around when SC will be feature ready.

The better question that I feel needs to be asked again.

Say the game came out tomorrow, I know a big ask, would the whales still spend money on ships?

I see the model going two ways....
1) P2W no one is going to buy ships for a large sum unless it gives them a large advantage. $1000 ship had better give you a $1000 advantage.
2) they don’t give a large advantage and people stop buying ships.

I know people get mad about this but I can’t imagine the ships are hats so essentially the game becomes who can spend the most. I’ve got a good job and lots of disposable income but not to spend on digital goods unless I really want them. I buy knick knacks

There is no advantage a $1,000 ship is going to give to a game worth playing, that is a $1k game plus the cost of the PC playing it.. the game costs what a computer does. I have disposable income as well but there are no digital goods I find worth 10 cents. I will pay $60 or even $70 for a full game with no MTX, DLC outside of a fully fledged expansion pack.. nothing flimsy, and void of any season passes. I am not talking about the first six months of its life either. They jumped on what PC modders did in the past and ran the ball. Fatigue is far past the point of setting in with 'Flux Gaming'.. it was at one time something to be excited about in the computer world.

All this is driving hard towards cloud based gaming, to give 'reasonable' people a good quality excuse to adopt it.

I mean I agree but I know people who would pay a lot of money for advantages in certain games. I’m not sure how this is sustainable and also a viable business model. The whales are in for big bucks already how are you going to further milk more money upon release.

The minute they make a cheap ship on the same power level as an older expensive ship the whole card house falls over.

I was understanding that when the game launched ship sales would come to a screeching halt. I guess that's a pipe dream huh?

I mean they could just go the route of newer ships being much better than older ships but that’s not super sustainable.

Also you’re supposed to be able to gain and buy all ships with in game currency not real money.

I dunno. I’m just keeping score, or trying.

Yeah, the problem is at this point that the prices have gotten so high on some of these ships that no matter what they do, people won't be happy.

Either the ships are uber-rare and expensive/time-consuming to obtain, which will piss off the general playerbase, or they'll be easily-obtainable with in-game currency, which will piss off the whales.

Maybe there is some balance between grind and price, but I don't see any reasonable level of grind that warrants a $1,000 ship.

I think the real whales are groups of people and or just huge fans. I don't think most people will be able to amass a collection like the whales will have purchased at the start in a short period of time.

I think this will be interesting to see though if the PU is ever actually considered published and not in some alpha/beta hell..
