Hey everyone I have a system with this CPU and graphics card. Both are over clocked, i7 is at 4.5 GHz. I want to wait for 3000 series cards before doing a full rebuild.

But I wondered what would be a good upgrade to get me some more fps while I wait for next gen.

Right now have a 1440p monitor at 165 hz.

In insurgency sandstorm when it gets busy I drop into the 40s which is pretty bad. I'm hoping to stay close to 100 fps. Also wouldn't mind a boost in VR, right now have a rift cv1.

Guessing Sli not smart ? Could get another 1080 for cheap.
Sell 1080 and get 1080 ti or 2080 ?

What do you think?

It's just an unoptimized game that seems to have trouble rendering shadows (they're done on the CPU).

According to this post, all you need to do is lower shadows a tick, and increase prerendered frames to 2.

I'd say you can get at least another year out of that system. Even demanding games like Battlefield 5 get over 100 fps on a 4770.

You might want to start checking that GPU usage when you're dropping below 60 in any game as I can tell you for a fact that it is mostly going to be the fault of your CPU. There wasn't a single game out there that I was dropping below 60 due to my GPU not being fast enough at 1440p unless it was a crazy setting like ssaa or msaa. My 4770k was pretty much always the reason I was dipping below 60 in modern games. Of course some games can just be poorly optimized as already mentioned.

Same here, I have a 1080ti 1440p@144hz monitor. I just switched from a 4770k to a 9900k and never drop frames anymore. Games also load much faster being able to use an m.2 now instead of a sata ssd.

So you switched your mobo and ram as well then ?

I feel like when people talk about their upgrades from a i7 4770k they notice a bigger difference from the ddr3 to ddr4 than the cpu. I could be wrong but I think the i7 w/ 4 cores and 8 threads should still be a solid performer in modern games.

Yeah it was probably everything else that made more of a difference, but I couldn't upgrade any of the other stuff without upgrading my cpu.

I had mine oc'd to 4.5ghz and average framerates were good.

RAM is often overlooked. I'm still running on a 5930K (overclocked to 4.6Ghz), still runs great and I dont feel its limited yet. I even ran 2 SLi setups on this before the 20 series and it ran great. Perhaps having 6 cores and DDR4 helps, but I also tweaked the DDR4 a ton. The CPU is only rated at 2100Mhz on the memory, but I run the DDR4 at 2400Mhz with extremely tight timings and at 1T command rate. It actually performs better than trying to run the ram at 2800Mhz XMS settings, but that's a whole other issue with BLCK settings and a strap that is hard as hell to get stable on Haswell-E. Never underestimate what tweaking RAM speed, but more importantly timings can do for you!

You are taking those placebo pills if you think they load "much faster" on m.2 vs. sata. Slightly is how I would put it.

You would definitely be wrong as the CPU upgrade itself would deliver vastly more performance than just a memory speed increase. An overclocked 4770k does fine in most games but there are several games where can't come close to maintaining 60 or even 50fps and the CPU is fully pegged. In some cases my minimum frame rate literally almost doubled going with a 9900k.

Mordhau maps took a minute to load on my old system and on my new one less than 10 seconds. There is no placebo there. I have timed it.

If you think that is because you moved to m.2 you are sorely mistaken my friend. But then again maybe your sata drive was junk, so it could be true.

Yep. I noticed the same thing when i swapped out my 2600k last month with a 3600. When playing overwatch the frames no longer have that occasional dip 30-40 fps on my 1080 @1440 144Hz

I'm sure it's a combination of all the new hardware, most other games already loaded fast enough there wasn't a huge noticable improvement. Maybe the portion of the ssd that game used was degraded or something.

9900KF is $420. Grab one of those and you’ll be ready for the 3xxx nVidia cards. It’ll also boost FPS for your current card.

It’s a beast.

If you're on the verge of a new build, I'd say just wait it out. There's no reason that system shouldn't give you acceptable performance at 1440p unless you're doing something seriously wrong.

A 4770k is not even acceptable for maintaining 60 FPS in some games much less being adequate for 165 Hertz monitor that he has.

What game is unplayable with an overclocked 4770k?

His "stop gap" options are essentially non-existant if he's planning to build next year which is likely when you'll see 3000 series GPU's from nVidia.

What would you suggest? He's already at the top of the heap for what is available for his board, ther's a 4790k but that's not going to do much beyond what an overclocked 4770k is already doing. So basically any CPU upgrade means new board/cpu/ram, which would be unwise if he's going to just do it again in a few months.

If he wants to build now and simply drop in a 3000 series GPU when they become available, that's another story. His options widen significantly.

I never said "unplayable". That is subjective but looking at the context here he is wanting very high framerates and he has a high refresh rate screen so a 4770k certainly cannot deliver what he is wanting. I would just go with a 9900kf and in fact that is exactly what I did and sold my 4770k/mobo/ram on here.

If he want's to upgrade now, I agree. If he wants to stick with his original timeline of a new build when RTX 3xxx cards drop, he really doesn't have any stop gap options. So really it's down to build a new system now or live with the performance until later.
