Ok so first is first..
I am a non storage guy at all...

at work, we are going to use a netapp with say 100tb of space. The storage team told me that we can only have 16tb shares. I googled it and I see that netapp has this limitation.

so from my Hardforum Peeps!!!!!

I do not want the overhead of 8 shares... so how can I do this?

my use case is simple...
using Veritas System Recovery Solution (within Symantec Management Platform - aka Altiris) to backup computers.
You create a backup policy per storage location... so...
8 shares = 8 backup policies
trying to manage that kind of backup space to balance and fill evenly

but next month, the machines may either have next to no space, or be super full and totally fill the share before all computers backup!!!!!!!!

we support laboratory computers and will be utilizing AWS for sites with fast internet access; however, utilizing local storage (netapp) for the sites with slow links...

I just don't know where to go with this as this is not a solution. This is a management nightmare, and I would rather find another solution vs netapp then.

thx and appreciate all thoughts on this...

I think you have many things mixed up here.
The 16TB llimit is per LUN but from what you describe, you are not using LUN. You seem to use SMB share which is FlexVolume backed that has much larger limit, exact limit is model specific, get your storage guy to find out.
Another option is to use dedup since you are using the volume for backup, there will be lots of duplicated data.

so yes I'm confusing things as I don't know anything on this topic...

so our storage team told me.. this ..exact copy...

Our initial look appears to show a limit at 16TB per share. We will investigate that further and confirm, but as you start planning these larger locations like Devens, we will need to allow for multiple different shares, rather than one single share,

so we cant have that... one NetApp is 175TB... so 10-13 shares is gonna be difficult to manage for my use...

Tell them to create you a volume, not a LUN. Go into Volumes, click the +Create and choose FlexVol, choose the SVM and when you're configuring it, under storage type, choose NAS not SAN after you pick what aggregate you want it on.
