Gears of War 5

Digital Foundry: Gears 5 PC: One Of The All-Time Greatest PC Ports?

Yeah, I'm pretty tempted to pick this up. My only reservation is that I haven't played Gears since 3 on Xbox 360 and I'm not sure if 4 preceded this game chronologically or what. So I might go pick that up on PC first and then this in a few weeks or something when hopefully Nvidia will have their updated drivers out for it. It seems like my RTX 2080 should be able to play this at mostly high/ultra settings at 1440P Ultrawide at 60 FPS from what I'm gathering there. I love the inclusion of DRS though and have believed that all PC games should have that as an option considering consoles have been doing it this whole generation basically. I wouldn't mind using that even with the minor frame time issue they point out there, as I doubt I'm as sensitive to it as they are.

I'm picking up a new 4K TV soon too (OLED or QLED, not sure yet), so I may try playing this on there via my Shield TV or Steam Link too to see which experience I like better; Ultrawide with KB/Mouse or with HDR and a controller (which I don't mind using for 3rd person shooters).

This is one of the best optimized games I've seen in a while.

For whatever it's worth: They have videos and such to catch everyone up on the story.

Gears 4 is pretty much the start of a new story/trilogy so you don't need to have played all the games...it would be nice to play Gears 4 beforehand but not a must

Just be warned that there's some pretty bad bugs in the campaign right now. I just saw my wife lose over an hour of progress due to some saving/checkpoint glitch where it would just hang on saving and prevent you from doing anything until you reset the game. There's a few threads on it on the gears forums as well. Some people were lucky enough to only have to redo the checkpoint, some nearly lost all their game progress. If you do get it you might want to hold off on doing the campaign.

I don't know whose bright idea was it to unlock the game on monday in EU, but I hope that person has a miserable life.

It's definitely a fantastic port and one of the best if not the best. Performance and A/V are just plain great. I got to some sections with planes and they have the same earth shaking Atmos height effects that were so great in 4.

If you haven't played Gears 4, they recap the whole game in the first 5 minutes of the game. Same cutscenes and dialogue. They rush through the last 1/4 of events, but otherwise it's everything you need to know to get going.

I got this via the $2 for Game Pass, but it might even be worth a purchase after my trial runs out. Either that or I might just keep the pass going. So far it seems like a game I'd play though several more times. I've completed 1 and 2 a bunch of times.

I'm just waiting for the standard game pass to unlock. I don't mind waiting the couple of extra days.

Release date is on the 9th which would be Monday here as well. Unless you pre-order, then it was unlocked a few days earlier.

I decided to play Gears 4 before starting up 5...seems like the story is a direct continuation so it seems better to play 4 first...plus 4 is pretty short

I upgraded my Game Pass for PC thing to Ultimate for a buck, so I have it until December. Pre-loading this now. I haven't played GoW since the first one, but from what I've seen this one looks pretty cool.

the Standard Game Pass PC version unlocks tonight at 9:00 PM EST

my bad...tomorrow night...according to the Gears 5 Game Pass page it unlocks on September 9th at 9:00 PM EST...I thought today was the 9th

Didn't get as much time with it as I'd like, but I've reached the open world section. Thus far I've just been stockpiling Jack upgrade items just because nothing I have seems great. I have 23 thus far. Anyone have a particular ability they find helpful? Does Jack's flash ever highlight collectibles? That's honestly what I really want.

There is a respec button for Jack so I wouldn't stockpile them. The remote revive ability can be useful if you and your teammate are split up. Otherwise I haven't really noticed much else that is necessary but I'm only on Act II.

Good to know. I kinda figured the health/revive functions would probably be handy at some point. I've only been KO'd twice and in both instances my team didn't seem that eager to revive me. In 4 they'll sprint to you even if you're surrounded. They also give you all day to crawl around. With 5 they make you sweat a little bit.

I feel like most guns pack a lot more "oomph" this time around. More recoil, heavier bass, and more power/damage. With 4 the Lancer was borderline OP compared to everything else. The enemies were really spongy and the chainsaw shreds juvies mindlessly. This time around it feels weak by comparison. While versatile and laden with ammo, it might be the worst normal weapon statistically.

Something interesting with the shootouts so far is that the arena size doesn't necessarily matter. You can win most firefights without using even a fraction of the battlefield. Everything but the shotguns can hit from a mile away and enemies tend to stay behind cover. I find myself killing most enemies without moving only to discover that the arena is massive later. That's at least the case with all of Chapter 1.

Didn't realize this was part of the Xbox Game Pass that I still only remember spending $2 on a few months back. Guess I can give it a try after all! I was thinking i'll play it in a few years when its sub $20.

Been playing the campaign over the weekend and just started Act 4. Solid game in general...the story, the performance, etc. I didn't care for the story of 4 that much and thought they should of left it at the trilogy...but this game turned that thought around. Really digging it so far (I play games more for the story/campaign then I do multiplayer...so haven't gandered yet in the multiplayer).

Very solid. KBM or controller works fine and you can remap and dial things in. You can't go wrong in terms of preference.
Does anyone else have a problem with x and y axis setup. When I reverse x, y also reverses and when I try to reverse y it does nothing. I have a hard time playing cause I can't setup mouse controls like I want too.

So apparently, turning camera shake off removes weapon recoil. Get that Insane difficulty playthrough done before they patch it out!

Game runs and looks great. From what little i've played so far it's absolutely better than GoW4. There is a lot of meat in this game, both the singleplayer and multiplayer seem to be worth playing.

running 5120x1440p with this game. Seems optimize enough to run for such high res. You're right about the shake cam lol. No recoil after you disable it.

Smooth as silk with my rig in sig using 1440P and Ultra capped at 60FPS. my GPU usage is only around 50-70%. Gotta say this game is gorgeous. Mouse and Keyboard controls are nice. One thing I ran into was major hitching. Took a complete removal via safe mode using DDU and installing the latest drivers out today for Gears 5.

4k w/ max settings and HDR enabled i'm around high 50 FPS on a 2080ti. Benchmark says 99% GPU limited.

What's weird is why the game only uses a certain percentage of the GPU... If it were to go-to 100% I would think I would get better performance when using uncapped fps but it does not change..

PSA: The Minimum Framerate setting uses dynamic resolution scaling, so setting this to any number will kick you out of native resolution to maintain framerate.

yup figured it out. I believe i got my GPU now using the correct power Target(I am lower than 100 due to my GPU cooler noise. This boosts over stock clocks... )

HDR in this game is incredible. One of the few games out there where you can tell everything was built from the ground up for it, and it wasn't just slapped on after the fact.
Wish I could afford/there were affordable true HDR monitors. I will be waiting for 27-32inch 1440p/4k 144hz microled/QLED with g-sync and true HDR for under 750$

You're going to be waiting an extremely long time. Maybe by the time Gears 12 is out such a thing will exist.

Yeah, going to be a while. The Acer X27 is still $1600+. Although it is a bit cheaper now compared to release. $1600 versus $2000.

For me personally it was worth it though. HDR with high refresh rate is amazing in games where you can do it.

Could you post a screenshot with HDR enabled? The LG monitors have it but they are all Freesync.
