What is the current state of going to Windows 10? I know that even after the free period ended you were still able to do it, and every time I've installed Windows 10 from scratch I've been able to use a 7 or 8 key to activate it. My nephew wants me to install 10 on his wife's notebook that has 8 but I didn't know what I might run into.

At least for now, apart from some "look and feel" preventions, Windows 10 runs unencumbered even if not activated. Might be a option (?)

I just updated my future desktop that was running 8.1 Pro, and I tried to use the same key on a fresh install of 10, but it would not accept my key, so I had to get another 8.1 Pro key that I had laying around and that one worked.

do a fresh install and when it asks for the key just give it the 8 key. done.
yep.....think i got about 6 win7 retail keys (not oem) for like 20 bucks with one of those tech.net promos way back when. I only use one or 2 at a time but i never had a problem with using them for Win10 over the years. I did have to reenter the number when i made a brand new build this last time.....but still worked just fine after doing that. I have never had to purchase a win10 key yet lol;)
