Can never go wrong with the tried and true hyper 212.

seconded! 212 has been my go-to aircooler for 5+ years, in fact the first system I tried it on was a secondhand 1366 i7- hit 4Ghz+ on that chip with a 212. stock anything should be cool and quiet with that

Question already asked about budget.
What case and motherboard do you have?

You can always go wrong with a 212. They are not good coolers, and they never were. They were cheap and that was the only thing that made them good. Save your money and get something you can actually use later. A 212 is about the same as a stock 1366 extreme intel cooler. You can do better, trust me.

What freeagent said. 212 is mediocre at best. Would help to also know what online sites you have. That way we can pick from coolers available to you.

If you can fit it in the case (171mm tall cooler) the Thermalright True Spirit 140 Power is great on 1366 for 50 bucks on amazon. Nice thing about 1366 is generally the cpu socket is higher so it does not interfere with PCIE slots but does extend past edge of the board.

The Macho is good too, it is larger depth-wise but is not as tall if you cannot fit the true spirit. I have the original macho on one of my SR-2 boards.

He says he just wants to browse and run stock.. I'm going to second the votes for something dirt cheap and quiet-ish like the deepcool gammaxx 400, hyper212 (non evo), etc. I do agree hyper 212 evo is not the best in class for $30-35ish heatsinks anymore. But any of these $20 heatsinks will be cooler and quieter than the stock hsf for a system used to browse the net.

All boils down to how cheap he wants to go and how big the case is. Buy the $50 tier heatsinks if you actually plan on doing something more than browsing on an old stock system with it later.

TS140P is 50 bucks U.S. I have one sitting on my x5690 mounted to a Rampage III Formula :D Its a great cooler. Here in Canada the 212 evo is almost 50 of our bucks. I have one sitting in my closet. If he decides he wants to overclock later on, that 212 isn't going to do a thing for him except let his cpu overheat once he brings it over 4ghz. IIRC the TDP on that cooler is about 150w. His CPU starts at 130w, he should be able to do 4ghz in the stock voltage range, which should bump him to nearly 150w, if not a touch more. So his cooler will be at the limit, and chances are, he isn't moving a bunch of air and the parties over. At least with a good cooler, keeping in mind it is only 50 bucks, he can have a fighting chance at bringing his cpu up a few notches. Now that 4ghz oc turns into a 4.5ghz oc without much effort, providing he can move some air.

DeathSmasher needs to tell us what case, motherboard and RAM he has. Also give us a few links to sites he can buy from so we know what is available where he is. Then we can make informed suggestions.

TRUE Spirit 140 Power is without a doubt the best cooler out and it's price makes the lowest cost hi-performance cooler as well. Only users that have problems with it or any other new build is with CPU chips being spread out under IHS like many new ones are having a good seat has become problematic. More and more serious builders are needing to lap cooler base and sometime IHS to get a full contact and thus a good seat.

Sorry for taking so long to reply. The case is the asus px58d premium motherboard box with a few custom alterations such as hot glues power switch an pwer led! im not 100% sure of the ram its the corsair dominator ram with the 3 stack of fans that clips on the top. As far as price yall tell me i just want cheap so i can just use the setup its going to sit in a cabinet in the shed to look up internet vids an play pandora id buy a stock cool but they cost just as much as an aftermarket one so i thought what the heck. I have no intrest in OCin it. Thank you for all the help!

Most all coolers will fit motherboard but you need a cooler that will fit behind RAM. You didn't say what case is so no idea how tall cooler can be. A few links to places you can buy from would allow us to pick a cooler you can buy.

He did say what case; it's sitting on top of or inside of a motherboard box. This isn't a fancy setup we're working with here, guys. This sounds like a machine that will live outside for basic tasks like browsing the internet and watching a youtube video or two. Nothing fancy. OP has said he doesn't want to OC so let's get that out of our heads. He just needs it to work.

OP: go to amazon and find the cheapest aftermarket CPU cooler for your CPU since you have no real requirements other than it work. Personally, I'd grab the 212 Evo. It's not the best, it's not the flashiest, but it just works. There's others out there that will just work as well so pick one, buy it, and move on. The only reason I'm going with the 212 here is it's been around forever, will do the job you need, won't break the bank, and since it's been around for a while, it's tried and true.

My bac, was looking for case name / model number, not a box.

I do not agree with 'find the cheapest aftermarket CPU cooler'. Many of the cheap ones are garbage with temps similar to stock and mounts that can damage motherboard. Not saying to spend a lot of money, but at the same time getting a good cooler is an investment that can be used on other future builds.

While 1366 are old, they are still quite good. Their biggest drawback is not their speed but they are so old the motherboard had 1st gen of things we are now using 3rd and 4th gen, so slower HDD interface, slower USB, no bluetooth, etc.

I agree; cheapest isn't always best. But I've noticed from time to time here on the [H] forums, the simplest of things can be twisted and made into something over-complicated. In this case, the guy has an old computer that lives on a box in a shed he uses for occasional web browsing and youtube watching. IMHO, there's no need to consider case airflow, other components on the board for thermal hot zones, what his load temps will be, if he prefers RGB or not, or the alignment of the sun to the moon during the third trimester of the year. He needs a simple cooler to replace a stock cooler (which was fine for him in the first place until it died) so I don't see the need to quibble over a few bucks, which one will get him better load temps, which is the best of the best, etc; find one that will fit that is made by a reputable brand and go for it. Thank you so much for all your input. It really made me think about what i should do. i want ahead an pulled the trigger on a TT Frio Silent 12. It came out to right about $11. It should be here in the morning when it arrives i will grab a picture of this totally awesome build! "sarcasm" I also scored a corsair case i thought as much dust an nastiness that is in the area what this is going to sit it need to be in something a bit more stable an then ill prolly put a panty hose over it. As Jim said this is basicly something i pieced together out of the trash bin i dont want to put any money into it but i do want it to work when i need it. youtube videos, pandora, instruction pages for w/e i may be working on hooked into a super old 55in tv hanging on the wall. Nothing special. Thank yall so much for the input fellas!

We all have different needs and priority's. What ever i buy and use today might end up being used down the road in a 3950x at some point. But of course this type of thinking isnt the same as this threads specific purpose. I have always leaned on the enthusiast priority's with cpu coolers cause i like to reuse my hardware. Had you made it more clear you were likely only spending 10 bucks if possible LOL cheap is awesome too depending on the circumstance

While i totally agree on your logic at the rate that electronics have been changing over the past 10 yrs id rather get the junk for the junk an if the 3950x comes into my future ill get the current best. Because if i buy something good now by the time its retired an open to be used its gonna be mid tier at best. But for say my daily computer ill always buy the best so when that upgrade comes up ill always have some sort of upgrade waiting for it. Are you planning on getting a 3950x? I just picked up a 3700x 2 weekends ago an let me tell you its amazing. it rekindles my love for computer hardware an that pretty much while i pulled out this old junk out of the closet an putting together a "garage" pc lol.

Thermalright has some new 120mm fanned cooler towers out that are very low priced .. at least on their Chinese website. Assassin Spirit 120 and Assassin Spirit 120 Plus (2x fans) look decent and are very low priced.

IMG_0191.JPG IMG_0192.JPG IMG_0193.JPG IMG_0194.JPG Well i got it in an it looks to be decent quality, I slapped it on but i have yet to see what its capable of so ill get back to yall on that after the holidays. I also got it in a case {corsair unknown model} I also found a 1060 that i had forgotten about. So now its starting to shape up to be a decent little runner It need a cheap SSD for sure in the short amount of time ive used it, it seems like its chugging hard. Wanna thank everyone for their input an sorry i dont have it real data on this setup yet give me a few days to get some nitty gritty! Excuse my poor execution of building a PC.
