Was ready to buy the RTX2070 with 8 gigs GDDR6 because of the Ray Tracing but then I found a better deal on a refurbished GTX1080TI with 11 gigs GDDR5X for basically the same price but without Ray Tracing. I don't know anything about Ray Tracing except that I don't have it and I want to be prepared. Any thoughts? Is Ray Tracing that big of a deal? Thanks in advance.

It's going to be in lost aaa titles announced going forward. How important it is to you is a personal decision. The vram is compelling but likely unneeded from the 1080ti.

Hmm there is more titles will be announce for RT in the future, so RT is pretty much here to stay, but whether you value RT is really up to you. If you don't care for RT, then I go with the cheaper 1080Ti. In regards about VRAM, the amount of usage varies from resolution to the type of games you play, that being said, 8 gig is fine.

Thanks for the info. I was going to ask if I really need 11 gigs VRAM. I'm mainly concerned that I will be able to run all the latest games on the highest settings with no dragging. If the RTX 2070 will do that then my minds already made up. My current system spec: Ryzen 7 2700x with 16gigs RAM and GTX 960, 1T M.2 PCIE 3 HD, 4k monitor. So the obvious bottleneck is the GTX 960. Thus the reason for all this. I'm probably going with the RTX unless I find out something here that changes my mind.

RTX 2070 is really a card for 2k resolution as oppose to 1080Ti is the first card that can run 4k decently. Depending on titles a 1080Ti will be 10-20% faster than a RTX 2070 unless you are getting the RTX 2070S. At 4K, I will definitely go with 1080Ti over a RTX 2070 unless you are planning to get the RTX 2070S.

2070 doesn’t have enough umpf to run raytracing

My 2080 doesn’t either

The only card that can run ray tracing, to a point it’s worth turning it on is the 2080ti.

I’d rather have a 1080ti than a 2070. It’s a significantly faster card and by the time ray tracing is viable — there is no way that 2070s hardware version of it will be.

Read up on ray tracing. It’s not ready for prime tune for gaming enthusiast, IMO. It’s just a tech novelty at this point. Doesn’t even look very different (or at all) on real world AAA titles over traditional lighting methods.

A 22 year old game, Quake 2 pegs out at 1000FPS on my system with a 2080. When I turn on ray tracing I get 33FPS. Umm. Yeah...no kidding! That big of a hit.

Ah, if you're talking the vanilla 2070 and not the super, I'd recommend the 1080ti over it. I automatically assumed the super was what you were looking at.

What he said.

The 1080Ti is faster than the 2070 and can play games at 4K.

Ok, thanks, guys. I'll pro\bably go ahead and go with the 1080TI unless I can find a steal on an RTX 2080. I agree with Archaes in that the RTX 2070 doesn’t have enough umpf to run raytracing anyway.

How much can you get a 1080ti for? At the $500 price point I would go with a 2070 Super instead

Without using RayTracing, should the RTX 2070 or 2070 super both be able to run all the latest games well on a 3840 by 2160 display? I guess that's really the main thing I want to be sure of. I'll post my specs again for convenience:

Ryzen 7 2700x with
16gigs RAM on a X470 Aorus MB,
GTX 960 GPU, (hopeful to change this line to ???)
1T M.2 PCIE 3.0 HD,
4k monitor.

For 4k, you're really looking at a 5700XT / 2070SUPER / 1080TI MINIMUM, and that's already dipping to below 60fps on some games with high settings.

Thanks mda I appreciate that info. And thanks to all who took the time to respond and give me a tip or something else to consider. It really helps to hear from people who have already been down that road and took the plunge. Will make my final decision a lot less stressful.

Only new 1080ti I see are for $900+, unless you can be your hands on one for $400 or below with warranty I would say 2070S then 5700 XT. However...

The 5700 XT (non-reference) is a good card for the cost and can match the 2070S/1080ti in some games. But... I still see people are having driver issues, searching google for the last 30 days shows many pages, threads, whatever. That should be fixable just depends on AMD and how long you are willing to wait.

Look up a trusted review site, not a YouTube benchmark compilation and see what cards are better for your games.

I like Gamers Nexus, he tends to show stock and Overclocking results.

If [H] has taught me anything, canned bench marks are garbage. Real world game play experience is where its at.. Everyone's opinion is going to different. So it depends on the games youre playing. Lately I've been playing 2016 Doom, Deep Rock Galactic, Descenders and a few others in 4k almost totally maxed on a 1660ti at 60fps. I only picked up a 1080ti for VR stuff and it sits idle most of the time. I'd wait for gen 2 or 3 for the RTX cards. Let everyone else be beta tester number 1. Save them pennies and get a 1080ti either on clearance or used for a sweet deal.

I have a 2080, and it will run games well at 4K, but not necessarily at 60fps.

For example, in Witcher 3 with everything ultra and hairworks turned off, I get 45-60 fps.

Destiny 2 is a smooth 60 fps.

Nice cards but gonna wait till second gen this time. Was gonna buy zotac rtx 2080ti used then guy said failed vga tests and started smoking. So think I sit this 1st gen of RTX cards.
