Acer 15.6" Ryzen 2700U/Vega 10/8GB/256GB SSD $489 NE SS

I think this is a fairly decent hot deal...NE has this 15.6" Ryzen based 1080P notebook on sale for $486 via SS deal. Assuming you can add another 8GB of ram (not sure if it has an extra SoDimm slot)you have a pretty sweet machine for under $510.

Cons appear to be a fair to okay screen and touchpad but we are talking sub $500 here so expect some compromise for them to hit this price point.


I'd buy one if I hadn't just done a CPU/ram/gpu+block upgrade for when we go visit the inlaws.

I have two laptops that are a bit better, Acer Nitro 5s with 8300H cpus and 1050 Tis, 256gb ssd and 1080p screens. They also have 8gb of ram, and I have never had a memory issue with them. For generally medium quality 1080p gaming or general use this is a decent deal, although not great. My laptops handle 1080p at high settings for the most part, certain games you need to tone it back a bit to get good frame rates. Looks like my laptop is 799 at best buy right now, so this is significantly cheaper. Not fair comparing it to the prices I got mine at, refurbs at $465 each. Just offering up a comparison.

+1 on the Acer Nitro 5. I also have the 1050ti edition and it was like $500 from the Acer refurb store (plus I had some kind of ebay coupon, but sales tax negated that). I added another 8gb for $30 (ebay, not that I needed it but still) and a 500gb SSD for games for $40 (microcenter). It's a pretty bad ass 1080p gaming laptop at double the price. IPS screen is awesome. On the downside... it's a suitcase and the fans get busy REAL quick. And the keyboard layout is strange. And the trackpad sucks. But for $500, no legit complaints.

Wifey is using it as her gaming rig and we hauled it on last vacation, but banish any ideas about whipping the thing out in coach on a plane. It's huge. I also have a thin/tiny Dell 14" that is good for travel but sucks for games. That's the one I use on the plane. They both go in one backpack.

OPs laptop looks pretty similar in design to the Nitro 5, doesn't look much smaller if at all. And the weight says 5 lbs vs 5.5 for the Nitro. They likely use similar cases. Still not a terrible deal for a new one $490 if you can get free ship/no tax.

Tru using the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility to reduce the voltage on the cpu a bit, which will significantly reduce the temps and fan noise. I run both of mine at -0.125 for core voltage offset, it still boosts fully to 3.8ghz

Thanks I'll try that. But it really only does it during games so I assumed the GPU was the factor. Hmm wonder if I can undervolt that too, will have to investigate.

Yeah but they both share the same cooling pipes, so even a partial load on the cpu during gaming benefits from the cpu putting out less heat.
