i just installed it upgraded from a 500gb 970 evo and it does seem quicker

damn these things are awesome for the price!
 
I have 2 of these and I am thinking about spanning them as a single volume
Probably the most sensible way to get 2TB without using the slightly slower and more expensive 2TB drives.
You wont suffer RAID issues if a drive fails or some other upset befalls, nor higher CPU use, and both drives can be separated at any time without a backup/restore.
 
I'm getting 3,000+ write speeds with the 1tb drive. I only got 2,000 writes with a 500gb 970 evo. Reads are slight higher with the inland as well but not as dramatic as the write speeds.
 
I decided to go for the Sabrent 1TB drive to replace my aging SX8000 480GB as my cache drive through Primocache.
I'll post if there's a noticeable difference.
 
Everything is more in the UK, although given the recent changes to the exchange rate its not looking as bad (not that its good at all).
I want to get one but am annoyed they dont support 512e.
It would be a no brainer if it did, but I need to be able to restore any Acronis backup to it or things get tricky/costly for time.
The cheapest here is the Sabrent at £118.

I am concerned that some mfrs E12 drives have only 512MB DRAM cache vs others with 1GB.
This limits how much data can be transferred in a session before dropping to the max rate of the TLC.

i think Microcenter had these on sale last week for $99 and Amazon was $104. I bought from Amazon with Prime because Microcenter is 2 hours away.
 
What other drive that is a 1TB that performs like this for around $100?

It has amazing sequential performance, but personally I am not convinced sequential performance is really what matters.

Some of the Phiuson E16 Gen 4 drives that have been tested thus far perform even better in sequential tests, but actually under-perform in real use tests (like loading programs/games, booting, etc.). Seeing that they are a similar design from the same vendor, I wouldn't be surprised if this drive has the same issue.

I thought we got away from sequential performance as the "end all" metric over a decade ago.
 
i don;'t know it's noticable faster to me just using windows 10 and installing stuff
 
i bought the 512gb version and installed it in another machinie and purchased the 1tb for myself and they all perform the same
 
I think it was mentioned earlier but it's 1am and I don't want to go digging through the thread 30 pages deep...


I need a small copper hestsink for the controller. I was told to leave the NAND naked, and based on the specs for these chips I am good with that. This is going to be just a steam storage drive and a second backup for 100GB of files..

My Mobo has a nice hestsink for the primary m.2 slot (which is Still PCI-E 4.0 along with my GPU thanks Asus) but the second slot is naked and sits all alone down by the 2nd PCI-E 16x slot.


I don't care that much but would be cool if I can get a black colored one. I assume we need a thermal pad that is sticky as well.

Can anyone recommend what you are using? I swear I had one in my Amazon cart that someone recommend but it's gone now.

works great, super cheap, you can find variations of colors from a bunch of different sellers but they're all the same thing. Leaving the nand naked isnt that big of a deal considering the entire thing is gonna heatup from all the heat the controller produces, and you likely aren't going to have a fan directly on the thing.
I've never had any issues at least.

As for the performance of my SABRENT Rocket. So far It's definitely faster than my old NVME drive (an ancient ADATA SX8000) but i've pretty much just been doing loading tests and seeing what it feels like. Definitely a worthwhile buy thus far, as it frees up my other drive for other uses.

Were you Adata drives single sided? The reason I ask is that these drives are dual sided. I assume I could just put the 'sink on the top, that would cool the controller but then half the NAND will be cooler then the rest. Not sure what that will do. Probably nothing but I'm curious.

There were a couple of others that were linked, but they weren't from Amazon. One was an EK heatsink that someone said they tried and it didn't fit, so they linked to another one (also not from Amazon). I'd do a little bit of due diligence to find out what people are using for these before ordering. I'm sure as popular as these are, there are some reports on heatsinks in other forums.

If you could source a heatsink the size of the controller and attach just that, that would be best.

Yeah I was thinking of just cooling the controller since there are no longer 2 GPUs flaking the second M.2 slot and it should get some airflow from my front rad fans, although the pump/res combo is in front of that part of the Mobo.

I am switching to all positive airflow position since my case has so many air gaps and I want to force some air down over the VRMs so I would imagine the exhaust air will flow over it.

My 2nd Sammy SSDs and a 1TB WD black see behind the Mobo panel and they run around 30-34C, so I would imagine this drive should be in that Ballpark or cooler.

I have heard to stay away from the EK sinks since they do not work with double sided drives but I'm not sure that is 100% true. I just want to o cool the controller anyway.
 
The ek sinks are single sided but the opposite side is also aluminum(just flat) so if you bypassed the clips for some small rubberbands it may work for a dual sided drive.

There are so many options for reasonably priced nvme lately. Lucky to have a microcenter nearby to take advantage.

They're both double sided, and there is also a chip of some sort on the bottom of the Sabrent Rocket. The amount of space between the chip on the "bottom" and the motherboard pcb is so tight that even just a thermal pad was too thick to prevent bowing of the nvme pcb.

Never had any issues with just one of those cheap heatsinks on top, and that's likely what I'm gonna use till I do.

Even stress testing it, it's not hitting over 42c, and it's hot in my computer room. (With my standard HDDs hitting about 45c)

I have one thats enclosed with a little fan in it ;) the only drawback is it also has an aggravating activity led onboard.
It did a really good job of keeping my evo cool and it was pretty much silent.
I cant find it at newegg anymore. Its called a Jeyi sk8 or maybe sk9. Ill have to dig it out to be sure. aliexpress is the only place i can find it now.

Oh yeah, I actually took a picture when I installed it.

The bright red one at the bottom is my SX8000 with the heatsink on it. Above the GPU is my SX8200 with the same heatsink. It's pretty much completely hidden by my massive CPU heatsink (and I can't even access it without removing the GPU.)

The sabrent ssd is that black bar 2 pci slots below the gpu, it's small, it says "rongdeson" because that's apparently the name of the enclosure. It's right above my HD tuner, the longer pci card with a heatsink. My system doubles as a media server, hence why I use all those hard drives.

Anyway, point is, even with airflow as restricted as this, my only intake is in front of all those HDDs, my nvme drives are cooled more than adequately.

That is... very weird. No reason to have contacts out to x16 for a drive that is at most x4 electrically, right?
There's a good chance they aren't traced all the way through. It doesn't show in any of the promotional shots, but when actually looking at the board, the PCI-E to M.2 converter I use only has traces on the PCB for X4. I assume its probably easier to manufacture all of them at once or something due to standardization?

I'd show you a picture, but honestly, its already installed and i'm typing on the computer it's installed on and I just don't want to take it out again because that is a lot of work.
