What used to be in your wallet?

After having been hit with one breach after another, I can happily say that I have never had a Capital One card, so I haven'[t been hit by this one, for a change.

“Capital None” really blew it. Glad this shit isn’t in my wallet.

Have one, just a balance transfer card, stays locked and tucked away so nobody can use it if they wanted.

Breaches are going to happen.

If most of the IT types on these supposedly Hard forums saw the shear number of intrusion attempts that hit banks systems per hour they'd get instant heart burn.

Breaches happen every year, and have for years, at this point it is really on the consumer to protect themselves.

Do not kid yourselves, your information is out there, it is being bought and sold to be used for everything from fake ID's to buying houses.

Yeah, I don't get the fuss about it. You can easily dispute charges and get them removed and/or refunded. At least in my experience the few times any fraudulent charges appeared on our account; my bank (USAA) immediately put the funds back into the account or removed the charge and sent us new cards. Barely an inconvenience these days unless you have a shitty bank I guess.

In this case it was a little more egregious as the intrusion included application data.

However I generally agree, I would much prefer my credit card data be compromised than direct PII.

If you want to be safe the only thing you can really do is close all of your credit cards and freeze your credit. That doesn't protect you from ID theft, but at least they cannot open new lines or credit. Assuming they do not have enough information to get the credit bureaus to reopen your credit.

Try that when somebody buys a house with your info.

Capitol One is in my mailbox twice a week. They get torn in half and thrown into recycling bin.

And these are the reasons everyone is rightfully concerned. It's not about any unauthorized charges on a credit card.

If someone gets enough of your personal info(PII), they can buy a house, get a loan, empty your bank account, pretty scary stuff.

Some tips:
The "Security Questions" often use the same questions... So one website/account might use "What was the make/model of your first car?" or "What is your mother's maiden name?". So one account getting hacked and leaking things like that, puts your other accounts at increased risk.

Solution to the security questions being breached is to not use the actual answer, but a made up answer that you do not re-use among accounts. So on one website, for the make and model of your first car put in "Malp Cheetah", on the next account for the make and model of your first car put in "Wheelz GoFast". Completely un-guessable answers. Some accounts will let you write both the question and the answer, be sure you never use the same one twice.

Meh. I'd be worried if all of my info wasn't out there from all the other data leaks. Who are these people after? Between all of the companies that have had data breaches, everyone's info is out there now. Sounds to me like the whole system can no longer be trusted, needs to be scrapped and a new system put in place that will be secure for 30 minutes.

The govt. should start forcing companies that lose your PII to pay for the 100% of costs involved in issuing everyone a new SSN, Driver licence, etc.

Just create a HIPAA-like law that extends to any company handling financial information. The hefty penalties for mishandling PHI in healthcare are tremendous enough that I think it would put a stop to this nonsense overnight.

Capital One said it will notify people affected by the breach and will make free credit monitoring and identity protection available.

No. I'm sick of this. We don't need 10 monitoring services. I want green paper.

Damn, just when I thought I was pretty lucky and avoided most of this.

My old local bank - Chevy Chase Bank - a while back got bought out by Capital One, so I changed accounts to ING. Then ING got bought out ... again by Capital One.

Outside of not using a bank, there's no way around it nowadays.

If they found/used some unpatched zero day, that might hold water. This 'hack' was due to credentials that were not changed from admin/admin. That should be considered negligence on their part for sure, and they should get slapped with a huge fine. They are far too large to not have gone through security auditing of their systems, and have monitoring in place to detect this kind of data movement.

I used to have a CO card but dropped it in 2000 due to them charging me interest due to them not processing CC payment (sent CBC CM) until 2 days after the CBC arrived which put payment one day late.

Paid the interest and closed the account and specifically told the rep to pound sand for not acknowledging the check arrived on time.

Figures.....first card too, cause they’ll give them to anyone.

Everyone up and down our street has been getting letters from them almost every day for weeks with offers to sign up with a credit card with them at stupid high interest rates, like 30-45%.

You can't tell them to piss off either because their "unsubscribe" number demands you enter your SSN to stop them from mailing you for *just* a year.

I might just start using their prepaid envelopes to mail lead bricks back to them with "fuck off" inscribed on them.

are you at least speaking from friend of a friend experience here? now there is deed fraud and mortgage fraud with their variants sprinkled with identity theft, but buying a house is one of the most involved processes you'll do in your life im sure you're aware, on top of that houses tend to be non-migratory so my super-stupid response to this is maybe go to the house address and arrest whoever is living there for a start.

That's cute that you thinks police give a shit in most cases.

Not everywhere my friend.

Not going to go into all the details and post some massive story. But a cousin (I know just about as bad as a friend of a friend) was put on disability for while. After a few weeks they rejected his case saying he was making too much. Turns out an illegal was using his identify and had been holding a job for a few years a few towns south of him. First red flag should have been the hospital having the wrong address listed for him along with the wrong insurance during the surgery before they updated it. At the time it was assumed to be a clerical error. Contacted the place and questioned if "his name" was there and they said no he had the day off. He went to the police and they just blew him off and refused to do anything about it. County said that since the guy was living a county south of them they couldn't do anything about it, county where the fake him lived said that since he didn't live in their county they wouldn't take the case. He then called the state police and they just told him to contact to the county sheriff office. So nobody would take the case. After some light digging he found that the person bought the house at the address originally listed at the hospital. After him poking around some the other guy up and left and stopped using his information. Left him with a house that he then owed mortgage on. Bank didn't care that is wasn't him that bought it, it was his name, his info, therefore he owed the money. Luckily he was able to sell the house to get rid of that. However had that not been so close and he not had been in a position where there was somebody looking at his income who knows how long that would have went on or what would have happen.

I have known police to have the same I don't give a fuck for bank account theft also. The bank gave you back your money so why do you care if somebody stole your account and used it to buy stuff?

So at least is some of the areas surrounding me. You aren't getting anyone arrested for identity theft. My guess is that 5 - 10% are illegals using stolen SSNs. If they went after every one of them they would need to double the forces so they just don't care.

I'd have told the county sheriff that it was technically my house, as it was purchased under my name, and they are trespassing on my private property. If they still didn't pursue something, I'd talk to my local representative and file a complaint.

uhh.. has he ever heard of a lawyer? im not gonna write up my experience, but for $200 my headache was gone.

That sadly is the problem, you first have to go through the courts as the police will not just act on your word and a printed email. Sadly for normal people like us we have to jump through a lot of hoops. Which can make sense because what is to stop me from saying that about your house right now?

I had about a 1.5 year battle because I just had a previous land lord make a mistake and think I still lived in an apartment, I can't imagine what is involved if someone bought a house under my name and how much it would cost me to undo all that.

Doesn't seem that difficult — write the bank asking for proof of ownership, they should be able to provide you with that much without issue. It's just a copy of the title with a lein on it in your name. Show the police the title and proof of identity, and if they don't do anything talk to your representative... or hire local militia to aprehend the suspect and drag his ass to the police for you, but the latter is a legal gray zone.

Anyway, I know it's a rough situation to be in, and they probably wouldn't do anything if you did what I would have. You'd need to go to court regardless, to nullify the purchase. It probably would cost less to just sell the property, especially considering interest is 99% of the first payments. Just saying that's what I'd probably do.

Didn't even think of that, yea it probably would be cheaper and faster to sell the house.

Just means we should all wreck our credit so we become safe from fraud haha.

No because I bought a special "RFID blocking" wallet on Amazon for like $15, with "special nanowire technology". I'm totally protected bro.
