If my 1080 dies on me today I would get a 5700XT, better performance then I have now for almost the same power and it costs less then my 1080 did at the time I bought it. The 2000 series RT performance is just to low at the dollars I am willing to spend to even consider them at 1440p.

This would be my call as well if I need to replace a GTX 1080 class card. For my own use tho, I'm holding on to my current card (Titan XP) and waiting for the next gen. Due to the current pricing, I want to move down a bracket to the x80 instead of the x80 ti product line so I'll have to wait for the next gen from AMD or Nvidia to get a worthwhile upgrade.
 
Still waiting on something worth upgrading from my GTX 1070 that's around the $400 mark (probably the next generation after this) , but if I had no video card and had to buy something today I'd probably go with the 5700 XT.

Also I don't want to spend $500 to get a decent upgrade... but if I were to get anything it'd probably be a 2070 super, reason being that it's at least a good amount above my 1070Ti, and the NVENC encoder is miles better for streaming than the AMD streaming encoder.

I concur, whlie I'd also consider the RTX2060Super, I think the best bang for the buck goes to the 2070 super, its like getting a 2080 for $500.

being that I own from both camps

AMD drivers for new cards are hot garbage for the first 2-3 months.

AMD UI is better than NV UI though.
The Nvidia UI is fine it just looks like a windows snap in from 10 years ago. Not like it's hard to use. AMD's adrenalin sure looks fancy though.

Exactly, it's very dated. I mean it works? Objectively speaking the AMD ui is far nicer/more modern and is streamlined into one UI, you don't have to download an extra piece of software (geforce experience)

I usually just install drivers only and afterburner for nVidia. If I do install Geforce experience I don’t need to go in there.

I don’t like AMD’s ui at all personally. I find it very inefficient. I end up at the “buy more AMD shit” (suggested upgrades) more often than someplace useful. It’s very inefficient. Overclocking and profiles should be one click away.

I just feel like nVidia is more intuitive and logically laid out, less clicks to get where I want to be, but I make either work.

Overall I’ve spent far more time on faulty hardware/software with AMD. That’s even a drawback on AMD’s CPU side. Less polished.

I'd get 5700XT if I was buying today. You can push it to 2200mhz at which point it equals 2800S stock, and above what you can OC 2700S.

However, not buying this gen - 1080TI will keep me going for a gen or two. My next large $ purchase is likely Valve Index, and this is not going to be any time soon (during the summer).
 
I'll probably buy something next year if nvidia does a 7nm refresh. If I had to buy today I think the 2060 super would be my choice. I don't like blower cards and really don't like loud blower cards. I'm sure that'll be fixed soon for the radeons but even then I think with the pricing being so close that I'd pick the 2060 super as it has CUDA and works better with tensorflow and python ml libraries.
 
I have a GTX 1080 that is still wetting my whistle, if I were to buy today it'd probably be the 5700XT.

On the other hand I told myself that my next purchase was going to support RT and right now with it in its infancy I don't plan on buying into it. I do see it coming into gaming rather quickly so I may be upgrading very soon in order to get this capability. Hoping I can hold off for a generation prior to upgrading.
 
I have an RX 5700 coming Thursday to pair with my 3700x coming Tuesday.. I guess I'm a PC racist and don't like cross pollinating .. going all AMD

I sold my GTX 1080 to cover for the "side"-grade

One Software to Rule them All
 
I'm still rocking an AMD R9 Fury, undervolted and overclocked. Still runs everything I need @ 1080... one day I'll upgrade.
 
i'd buy a RTX 2080Ti today for ~$600.

Or i'll wait until both have competitive 7nm parts that compete for that+ performance.

Really? From couple reviews I've seen the 2070S OC's slightly better and more importantly SCALES better in perf for given OC.

I should say both manufacturers OC potential has been abysmal for last couple gens. The last great OC'ing card was the 980Ti which was a phenomenal OC'er.
 
5700xt with a aib cooler or water and undervolt + oc looks like serious bang for the buck!

i wouldn't say they're bad per say, just that both sides are willing to give you the max potential of the gpu's instead of neutering them to fit within a specific TDP.. that's probably been the biggest change since both sides added boost clocking to their gpu's.
 
I guess I don’t understand why anyone would pay that money for 15%. A GTX 2080 Super or 2080 Ti would make sense if their prices were lower.

Very similar to people upgrading from Vega to Navi.

But they are both small upgrades, that I wouldn't do either. Just pointing out that it is a little more than a side-grade.
 
You do realize this is not VEGA, right?, so undervolting may not help at all.

People already have proven like Any amd card made the last 5 years.
Undervolting helps.

1150 Mv -> 1000 MV did net people 100 mhz more at same power limit.

I assume this is mainly with an alternate cooling since stock cooler is hot and loud even at stock speeds.

I haven’t been following this launch. Are you saying AMD took a shotgun to their foot, again?

"Not apple fan" on YT, did it with stock cooler first, and then replaced it, gained only 50mhz extra, but also lower temps, less noise. Few of the others seem to have done it past 2ghz with stock fan, but I doubt they mind the noise.

Not sure what it the deal here, the increase is large, power is not through the roof, but it is not clear whether there is another catch. No dead cards from what I was reading at this stage :D , but it's early days. Encouraginging enough though, that I would try it out, if I was buying now.

The "shotgun to the foot" is that they launched it with a botched BIOs? AMD generally messes up every GPU launch in some manner.

What will running a 5700/XT at those extreme power limits and 2.2Ghz clocks do to the lifespan of the cards?

Often it's like this with AMD. Same with 7970, 7950, v56 etc, best oc needs bios And actual tweaking, not just maxing a slider for dank ocz.
By the time we figure it out you lot already jumped on jensenwagon.
 
So in order for 5700XT to reach this level of performance vs the 2070S OC....


You will need to spend over 120eu just for the waterblock alone (way more for rest of WC kit if you dont have it). All this to beat a 2070S on air by around 2%. So you end up paying more for extra parts, complexity, hassle, etc. Can anyone demonstrate to me how this makes any sense?

Yes, I can appreciate it from that sense, but those doing so are therefore not really looking at the better value aspect nor care which card is a better buy (as implied by the poll), but more for enthusiasts who enjoy the added work involved. The benchmark shown is not really to help people make up their minds (as its misleading), but just a FYI thing if one decides to liquid cool the card.
