Here is my very old xspc raystorm.

I will come back and post image of post cleaning.

Last time I cleaned my block it looked similar.
A steam cleaner brought it up like new without any damage.

I have 31% hydrochloric acid I might titrate down to 15% and let it run its course. Should clean it like new.

I'm just wondering what those little black fibers are that have collected under the jet plate.

Maybe its dust?

It looks like bacterial growth.
My block took 3.5 years to look like that with pure water, easily removed with a steam cleaner.
I got mine from Lidl for about £22 inc vat, keep your eye open for bargains.

So here's after 5 mins in 32% HCl solution.

I had to add some water to activate the acid a little more as Cu doesnt react with HCl acid.

Now I just need to get a dremel with a copper brush to deep clean the grooves and a polishing head to smooth the copper out and it will be ready for 3900x Ryzen on 3 weeks.

This was an old block that I let run without ever changing fluids. It was in a secondary system that I blissfully neglected.

Also a side note XSPC told me an email that their AM4 block actually cools Ryzen better than the bigger Threadripper block which I also own. I wonder why that is? I was considering mounting my sTR4 block to AM4 with a little modification.

I wonder why that is?

I'd hazard to guess that they're different enough that you'd want to use the right tool for the job. The TR / Epyc socket is certainly huge, and the dies are spread out like heat islands, versus Ryzen where they're more concentrated in the center.

But I'm definitely guessing.

Im pretty sure the black crud is corrosion from being submerged for so long. The copper turns black over time. I ran an old ek block on my 2600k for 5 years without a fluid change and thats what mine looked like. I was upgrading the block so i never bothered dremeling the black stuff off. It would definately require some serious dremeling to remove tho.

Get something called Tarnx. it cleans tarnished copper in less than 5 mins. It's recommended you don't leave it on for more than 2 mins per application. It smells like rotten eggs, but the stuff works and works very fast. It's what I use to clean all copper blocks. No need for dremeling anything.

Ok I'll search for it. I have other blocks Inwant to clean as well. What about Nickel coated blocks?

Edit* first search turned up Wallyworld as having some for 4.88 12oz.

Don't use on any plated blocks. That stuff will eat through the plating very quickly. It's to be used only on base metals.

I use CLR on mine but it didnt work on the blackened edges and fins. I usually only leave it soaking for 5 minutes or so but even after an hour it didnt clean the black stuff off. Its safe to use and wont damage nickel finishes. I use it to clean out my rads too. Just be sure to rinse them out really well.
