Samsung and AMD could power Nintendo's Switch successor

I was going to say that this won't help squash the rumors that Nvidia is difficult to work with but it sounds like they don't have anything new for Nintendo to use.

Also while I know why they're doing it I think it's a mistake for them to stick with ARM since they've been trying and struggling to get more AAA third party titles ported to their systems recently, they always did march to the beat of their own drum though.

I imagine Nvidia will have something in the pipeline for them. They most likely have something in the works for 8k televisions so no doubt they’d want to sell some scale.

Nintendo will probably be the ones to first get Gaming as a Service going with dedicated devices. Then everyone will follow suite. And consumers will bleed for it.

Probably doesn't help that Nvidia was responsible for the hardware based exploit that allowed the Switch to be jailbroken rather easily.

The problem with moving away from ARM is the form factor. Look at the Smach Z. Getting x86 into that form factor with decent battery life and cooling capacity isn't easy or else they'd be doing it already.

Given how absolute shit Nintendo's online service has been historically (and in many ways, continues to be)...I find that sort of laughable.

Yep, and people thought dual screen gameboy's would be crap.

Or nobody would want to use a stylus with a gameboy.

Or that the technology wouldn't be embraced.

Or that a hand held device could give a good gaming experience at HD or higher resolutions.

Or that people wouldn't want to game with weird little nunchuck things.

Need I go on? Nintendo is excellent at creating a market segment for themselves. I have no insider information, just history to go on.

I don't think it meant to cramming a x86 into the Switch but using Exynos with a GPU that is better than Mali or in this case, better than a Tegra.

But historically, Nintendo online service have always been a weak point for them, not saying they won't improve just they haven't been on par with Sony or Microsoft.

Those were all fairly innovative, we're not really talking about innovation here. We're talking about a successful implementation of online game streaming. And like I said, given Nintendo's track record with EVERYTHING online, I don't see it happening. Or at least, I don't see them leading the charge in that arena.

Fair enough. I can appreciate that.

Yet they already are in Japan. Might not be them directly, but it works for the switch in Japan. Shouldn't be too difficult to buy or contract a hosting service.

I think Nintendo should just quit screwing around with gimmick tablet controllers and make a console with class-leading hardware, a super easy GUI that sorts by console (NES, SNES, S64, Wii, etc), and put their entire library of games in an online store all the way back to the original NES.

Offer the tablet as an add-on that people can buy and link to their new console, and access their store game library when connected to WiFi, and install a handful of games (5 or so from each console generation, up to the storage limit of 64GB-128GB-whatever) to access while away from an internet connection, such as when travelling.

Was going to say the same thing. I bought it anyways, I don't think the kids even use it. Nor do I, as I've moved back into PC gaming since they lost our BotW cartridge.

Rampant click bait speculation.

Let me post another tomorrow "Nintendo developing in house graphics chip"

Particularly since, at this point, a switch successor would still be the kind of thing in early development/bidding stage where Nintendo is looking at options and thinking about what they want to do. It is WAAAAY too soon to be committed to a design that will replace it. It is a little over 2 years old. If they released a replacement now it would likely be a disaster since people would be pissed about something getting abandoned so soon and be wary of buying in to something new lest it happen again.

Now a refresh of the Switch might well happen, something with a bigger screen, more GPU power, etc. That is perfectly possible... however such a thing would almost certainly stick with nVidia for compatibility reasons, just like you see with the Xbox X and the PS4 Pro. If it is to be a "refresh" then you have to have 100% forward and backward compatibility, otherwise it isn't going to work and that is much harder to do if you switch up vendors.

As for a true successor, anything this early would be rampant speculation, even something from Nintendo engineers themselves.

Or, they could keep doing the “gimmick tablet” that is making crap tons of money and continuing to sell incredibly well after over two years on the market. The “gimmick tablet” is going to surpass the XB1’s lifetime sales this year and has even surpassed the PS4 in Japan. Going for a spec war against two companies with near bottomless resources is a terrible idea.

You know... I agree is way too early.
Thinking about big N, im just ... Wtf they going to do next? A refresher of the switch can certainly happen... But what's the big pivot? Sadly I think they going streaming and all that.
Now an amd/Samsung nintendo cellphone... Not something i would want but might happen along with streaming..

Even if what they do next is literally just another portable/console hybrid, or just a standard console, it is still too early. Not only does it take time to design things, but if you bring new consoles to market too fast and obsolete old ones, people will get pissed. I'm sure they are working on "what's next" but it is likely concept stage at this point, playing with multiple ideas and thinking what might be good, as well as talking to vendors to see what they have coming that would be of use. I'm sure they are talking to Samsung, and AMD, and nVidia and so on but the chances they've committed to anything are slim to none.

I feel like you contradict yourself here. Note that it's clear they're selling well, but don't think they can compete? It's MS and Sony that can't compete, otherwise you'd see them pimping handhelds and selling millions of them to go along w/ their set-top boxes.

As a middle-aged gamer with 3 gamer kids on the rise, we're a dual Switch, 3 Gaming PC household w/ no PS or Xbox anything. Even my kids would welcome a "Switch Pro", and we'd be happy to dump a $1000 on a box that can play BoTW AND say, Black Ops 4.

Who knows with Nintendo though - they break the mold seemingly every generation, and they could go in any or multiple directions in the future. You're already starting to see as shift to mobile gaming from them, and I could see them getting out of hardware entirely. At the same time, I could totally see them taking all their experience and making their next gen system the be-all end-all gaming system. High-spec set-top box w/ VR system & Switch 2 mobile docking.

I never said they can't compete, I said going for a SPEC WAR against them is a terrible idea. Nintendo is able to compete due to taking a different approach to both hardware and game design.

AMD powering yet another game console. This is NOT news anymore...it's business as usual at this point.
