boxed, absolutely rare Creative 3D Blaster VLB (CT6200)

I wouldn't be surprised if somebody paid that kind of cash for that boxed. 3d blaster VLB is rare and I've seen precisely 0 of these boxed. I don't believe this card existed for consumers until just shy of 1996, VLB didn't go beyond Socket 3 short of some unicorn socket 4 builds whose existence I can't confirm or deny...

If you think the card is rare, try finding the memory module to get directX support...

90s hardware has clearly reached that critical mass where it's gone from bargain bin to collectors maxing out credit cards just to say they have a part. I'm moving on to toying with 2000s hardware cuz if I'm not pulling it out of a dumpster, it's no fun! Still got my 486 and Slot 1 rig with a few spare parts to keep me happy..

On this line of thinking, considering no one ever kept the boxes for this stuff long term, the box is almost certainly six times rarer than the card, and if the only use is collectibility, them 6 times the price for the box makes sense.

What we all need to learn here is how absurd the idolatry that is called "collecting" is. How much better off is the life of the winner of that auction for having that box on his shelf? ZERO. His life is the same. Except he has less money to work with or contribute to worthwhile endeavors.

I'm not sure wtf you mean by 'worthwhile endeavors'. It's as if you juxtapose your 'worthwhile endeavors' as being superior to other people's 'worthwhile endeavors'.

I kept some boxes but nothing valuable I guess. I just let go of a socket 3 486 VLB board in the box with original manual and even receipt, never used, with CR2032 (instead of those leaking NiCAD batteries). It went for around $25 shipped. Sold it as-is though since I didn't have a spare AT PSU laying around to mess with it. That box was pretty plain though, from the days before fancy slot 1 boxes decorated for gamers.

With the collecting. If you have over 5 grand to spend on a decoration, AWESOME. Also, you have to remember to some people it's also an investment. Prices on these things are only going up, so we're now talking about an asset.

I understand what you mean though, it's easy to get lost in nostalgia and addicted to collecting. I know quite a few people on vintage hardware forums who have way, way too much stuff. Literally buried in it and their garages are starting to look like those hoarders TV shows. That's a bad extreme but not all of us are like that. I'm always on the hunt for this kind of stuff, but only willing to pay what I can afford to pay, which is usually less than $100 for things I really want.

I used to store my boxes. I still have current boxes but a lot of the old boxes, some with the item in them, got tossed a few years ago without my knowledge, :(
