RAM for TR 2950X

Hey all,

I am building a media workstation for a friend based on a 2950X and an ASUS X399 Aorus Xtreme. I am looking to go with either 4x or 8x 16GB (64GB or 128GB). Haven't 100% decided. That's where my questions come in:

- Is there a relevant performance degradation w/8 sticks?
- I know the Samsung B Die preference, but I also don't want to spend an arm and a leg. What are some ideal kits for this setup? (Links appreciated!)
- Is 3200/C16 a reasonable target? Any reason to aim higher? Or maybe it's OK to aim lower and save the dough? 3200/C14 or 3333+ might be nice, but it's not worth 50%+ more $$$... is it?

Any other advice/insight ... feel free!
 
Media workstation; would this be Adobe workflow or some other editing/production station?

My 12c/24t machine with Adobe workflow sometimes gets close to hitting all 64 GB of installed memory but I wouldn't build out a machine with 128 GB just for those one or two occasions when it's close.

Just my 0.02 USD or so...

Adobe Effects, Premier Pro, maybe some other products. I'd like it to be sufficient for a while, not just the next couple years.
 
If this is for paid projects get the 128 GB and relax knowing you're relatively future proof (and you'll make up the cost difference eventually). If this is for a hobby call it a day at 64 GB.

What if it's for a non-profit ... haha
 
Depends on whether or not you're getting into 4K footage for which I'd go with 128 GB despite the cost. Needing to upgrade RAM later would mean ditching the entire RAM investment. If you're trying to keep costs down that's not going to help.
 
Definitely will involve 4k, so it sounds like I should do 128GB.

Still open to suggestions on the speed/latency/model selection
 
You can probably (but not guaranteed) run 2 DIMMs/Channel at 3000/3200 with the later BIOS revisions.

I'm doing 4x16GB 3200 C16 Corsair LPXs with a 2700X, non BDIE RAM.

Worst case is you could probably run 2666/2800...
 
Go for a G.Skill kit, 3200MT/s CAS 14 Samsung B-die seems to be the current sweet spot...

14-14-14-34 timing is what you are looking for...

128GB kit on NewEgg...

I believe the speed of the Infinity Fabric set by memory speed / timing...?
