64GB on AM4 Platform?

Hello Everyone!


I'm doing a build almost exclusively for use with Adobe's video and photo editing software and having 64GB of RAM (4 x 16GB, double sided Samsung B Die) was a salient feature of it. I was pretty dead set on building on the AM4 platform (as opposed to the much more costly TR platform). As I'm now at the point where MB + CPU are the last items left to buy, I'm finding a dearth of info regarding motherboard choices to take advantage of 64GB of double sided Samsung B Die at speeds in excess of 2933MHz.


Obviously, the upcoming release of Ryzen 3 + X570 motherboards may completely change things, but looking strictly at what's currently in stores - is 64GB of double sided memory do-able on the AM4 platform at say, speeds of 3200MHz? If so, what motherboard do you recommend?


Here's the part list to this point:


CPU - not yet purchased - AMD Ryzen 7 3700X if I wait

Motherboard - not yet purchased - ???

Videocard - MSI AERO ITX GeForce GTX 1070

RAM - G.SKILL Ripjaws V F4-3000C14Q-64GVK (4 x 16GB double sided Samsung B Die kit)

SSD - ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro PCIe NVMe Gen3x4 M.2 2280 1TB SSD (ASX8200PNP-1TT-C)

Power Supply - Corsair RM1000i 1000W

Operating System - Microsoft Windows 10 Professional

I could get it running on a Crosshair VII Hero, with Hynix RAM.

AMD has mentioned that up to 3200 is now supported on X570+Zen2.

I'm quite sure you'll have no problems on a half-decent motherboard.
 
I think it is too early to say what will and what will not work with the 3700x, it hasn’t even been released yet
 
officially 2666 is what they're saying is possible with all 4 slots filled so use that as a base line.. i'd say 3000 will probably be do-able based on x470/370 daisy chain configuration boards. but it was mostly single ranked 4x8GB that could push 3200+.

we'll see though, still to early to tell what the limitations will be.
 
Check out this thread with 1x16Gb dual rank Hynix CJR on Zen+ by Sherloc09 ... tighter subtiming than B-die and lot cheaper. Your best bet may be them if you want to save a few bucks and not deal with the coming availability issues of B-die as it's no longer made.

But no one knows what the IO die will do on Zen2 for our use.. hopefully it means lots of space for a kickass memory controller.

This has been my experience with all 4 slots filled.

I had to drop to 2 slots to get 3200 running. So I went down to 2x16 gb of b die @ 3200

Are the Hynix sticks you're using double sided? What BIOS release do you use?

CPU-Z confirms dual ranked DIMMs.

I'm running on one of the April 2019 BIOSes.

These memory kits are the Corsair LPX 3200 C16s.
 
I'm currently running 4x4 (I know-16, not 64) of Patriot at 3000 CAS 14 on my rig, so all 4 slots can go above 2666 w/o issue.
Could not get Windows to load at 3200 CAS16 and didn't really put too much effort in monkeying with it.

For using all four ram slots at faster speeds, you will need a T-Topology motherboard which for AM4 is a rare configuration. Daisey Chain configuration is faster for two sticks but becomes a bottleneck when the you use all four modules. For ASUS you would have to go back to the ASUS CrossHair 6 Hero for T-Topology memory lanes (all signal lengths are equal which allows four sticks to clock higher)

This motherboard should have no problem supporting 12 core AMD CPU's and OCing them since the VRM's were way overrated for the 8 core Ryzen CPU's. If you want to go 16 core then I would just go with stock speeds. For 8 core Ryzen 3 processors the board is overkill.

Probably too early yet to know how Ryzen 3 will perform with Daisey chain memory configuration on motherboards and all four slots with double sided ram. I use all four slots 4x 8gb Samsung B at 3200mhz with tight timings (it will go faster but I am utterly picky about stability and OCing) on my CrossHair 6 Hero. Great board with the latest bios's which support Ryzen 3.

Actually, AMD states that Zen2 can support up to 32GB DIMMs; with speeds up to 3200MT/s across two DIMMs & 2933MT/s across four DIMMs...
 
I would merely suggest that there are some KILLER deals on TR4 stuff right now - and it supports quad channel. That may not be your flavor, and I certainly understand that, but I figured I'd just point it out.
 
There's killer deals on all hedt.
This just ended, I don't need the lanes right now, I'm fine with 28 for the moment.

I'm on an x299 box that fired up the first time with 128gb at 3200. Threadripper couldn't do it at the time I needed to build a box.

I've seen a couple 1950x + Taichi combos go for $500 in my area the last month or so.

Video editing I'd want 4 nvme drives, dual GPU, and a minimum 12-cores.

Thank you all for your feedback and input. I went with a Threadripper 1950X and ASRock X399 Taichi motherboard. Currently have the G.SKILL dual rank 4 x 16GB kit at 3133 doing 14-14-14 stable. Hopefully I can continue tuning and get to that 3200 goal for this quad channel kit.

Very happy thus far with what we are seeing!
 
So after reading some reviews of the new Ryzens, I am definitely excited at the prospect of picking up whatever new Threadripper they announce based on the new Zen core (in the future). Until then, I think we will sit tight with the 1950X and X399 Taichi we picked up a few weeks ago at steep clearance discounts.

Moreover, I think getting four sticks of dual sided dual rank RAM to 3133 in a quad channel config would be about as good as what we would've been able to eke out even on a new X570 board.
